The best hair colours for grey hair in Abingdon
Whether you are in the early stages of going grey or you are experiencing lots or almost 100% grey hairs, there are happily plenty of options! You can decide to embrace it, blend it or opt to fully cover them and there is no right or wrong answer. It’s arguably in-salon the most common subject when we speak about hair colour and one of the most important motivations of many ‘what can I do about my grey hairs?’. So whether you’re looking for something low-maintenance or complete coverage, there are a few factors which should be considered before colouring your hair in-salon or at-home and understanding your hair growth, what works for your budget and most important what will look best are key features. In our daily blog our Stylists walk through the most common options, what should be considered and which options could possibly work for you.
If you are considering something different, our highlights service page and tint service page can help. Finally, if you’re new to the salon and not sure how to get the most value from your next appointment, need a consultation or would value a conversation before booking, call or send a WhatsApp message on 01235 534705.
Hair colours for grey hair FAQ's
Is it easy to cover grey hairs?
Many hair colour brands now offer bespoke colours designed specifically for grey hairs and as a result colouring your grey is easier than every, however it generally requires a more tailored approach. Fundamentally grey hair has a different texture from pigmented hair (hair before it turns grey) and this can be much more resistant to most typical types of hair colour. The science behind grey hair means that grey hairs stop behaving as we expect them to and as a consequence absorb hair colour differently. This means that if a permanent hair colour worked for you once before, it’s likely that it may not work on your new grey hair.
Happily there are a number of options and these can depend upon the direction and where you see your transformation going. As a JOICO salon we have options from ‘YouthLock’ (a form of hair colour specifically formulated for grey hair), semi-permanent, demi-permanent creams and liquids with each offering different results dependent upon your anticipated frequency of appointment and what you would like your hair colour to look like in the coming weeks and months when balanced against upkeep.
What do i need to consider when colouring grey hair?
When choosing both a hair colour and type of hair colour service for grey coverage (i.e. highlights, lowlights, tint, balayage etc), it’s important to consider what you hope to achieve. Simply covering grey hair is straightforward, however it’s not always the obvious choice if you seek something long-term that is maintainable and easy to manage. These should be key decisions which should factor into your overall decision.
Your colour choice should consider your greys, your original natural hair colour and your skin colour. Certain hair colours can look nice on other people, however they can make certain hair types and skin colours appear dull and flat. Equally other shades can work positively to counter unwanted tones and even add dimension which doesn’t currently exist and it’s in this scenario that hair colour can work in your favour.
The key consideration for many clients is cost. Hair typically grows on average by half an inch every four weeks and therefore consideration should be given to how you anticipate your hair colour look like in four weeks time (or longer dependent upon your chosen colour service). Tints are excellent at offering coverage, however a follow up colour booking would be required shortly thereafter given the more obvious regrowth given the contrast in colours. Equally selective with the help of your Stylist compatible colours using highlights, lowlights or a combination of both can at worst reduce the concentration of grey hairs and at best can ‘trick the eye’ when disguising more obvious grey hairs.
What are my options for colouring grey hair?
There are several approaches to covering or blending grey hair, and the level of coverage. Let’s explore both covering and blending (and in some instances a combination of both).
The most popular approach to colouring grey hair is to blend grey hairs alongside the introduction of additional colours. This approach merely reduces the percentage of grey hairs that remain visible post colour by tactfully selecting colours that aren’t too dissimilar whilst still being noticeable. This approach of highlighting hair ensures that your greys are blended by both softening your overall colour and reducing the impact and contrast of grey hairs so grey hairs will still be present when your hair grows, they will be much less noticeable and for longer. To maximise the impact of reducing lots of grey hairs, Stylists can tactfully select colours from within a ‘range’ which reduces how visible these are. This is by some distance the most popular choice and the choice for clients where greys are becoming too great. For the most natural end result, try ‘babylights’. Here’s what babylights are.
The second option is an all over colour which offers complete coverage of your hair colour from roots to ends. This is a nuanced approach insofar as tints can achieve different things. Some are designed to fade gracefully minimising the regrowth, however this also means that the colour will fade requiring eventual recolouring. More ‘permanent’ solutions are availability and these will fade far less readily, however there is greater emphasis on rebooking a follow up appointment shortly thereafter to address the more obvious regrowth particularly given the contrast between grey and (particularly) darker colours is far more noticeable.
How often will I need to colour my hair?
The frequency of follow up hair colour appointments to cover or blend grey ultimately depends on the method used to colour your hair and to a lesser extent the speed at which your hair grows (we loosely assume most clients hair grows at the rate of 0.5 inches every four weeks). For all over colours we typically recommend touching up/tinting roots every 4-6 weeks to ensure coverage and anything between 8-12 weeks for highlights or lowlights.
Certain types of hair colour are unique insofar as they can be applied much more ad-hoc. For example (and whilst not commonplace), hairline tints (which cover the immediate hairline and parting only) can be applied monthly ‘in-between’ appointments both cost-efficiently and inside of a 15 minute appointment window. Additionally highlights and lowlights if applied more sparingly (for example up to 10 foils only) can be applied once or even twice annually such is the softness of regrowth making it highly attractive for clients seeking both subtlety and low-maintenance. If you’re conscious about the cost of hair colour appointments, here’s how you can budget for the most cost-efficient colour services.
Conclusion
Choosing the hair colour and method of application can largely be attributed to how you wish to present, the volume or grey hairs, anticipated frequency of appointment and budget. The most popular choice is a combination (or one of) highlights and lowlights and this option offers many obvious benefits. Understandably this doesn’t offer complete coverage and if this is your primary motivation, nothing will come close to tinting your hair for a 100% end result.
Maintaining grey coverage requires regular touch-ups, with the frequency depending on the method used. Those who prefer a high-maintenance approach can opt for permanent dye with scheduled root touch-ups, while others may prefer the softer grow-out of demi-permanent colour or highlights.
