Feathered Layers FAQ's
What are feathered layers?
Feathered layers are a type of layering that help to create feather-like ends of the hair. Traditional longer layers help with movement and offer a more structured look whereas feathered layers are cut with a view to blending and softening the edges for a more flowing end result. Historically ‘throwback’ haircuts utilise feathering as a means to creating a classic style; feathering was really popular in the 70’s and 80’s (Google Farrah Fawett as an example).
The term feathering relates to how the hair visually ‘fans out’ toward the ends. A Stylist will feather your hair by cutting the hair at an angle to create a tapered effect, allowing the ends to move more naturally. Feathered cuts are generally better suited to longer styles however they can still be introduced to varying lengths from short bobs to longer haircuts.

How do feathered layers differ from longer layers?
While both feathered layers and long layers seek to deliver very similar things (dimension and movement) they achieve it in different ways. Long layers are effective by introducing volume and shape without sacrificing much in the way of length and they offer a fairly consistently blending throughout the haircut. Longer layers tend to be effective in finer hair and supportive in thicker hair types where they can be useful in helping to remove excess and unwanted weight from the haircut.
Comparatively feathered layers focus almost exclusively on the ends of the hair. Feathered layers soften the edges to create a feather-like effect on the ends for a lighter finish compared to a more fixed style in the form of longer layers. Feathered layers are ideal if you want a softer.
What do feathered layers look like?
Feathered layers create a wispy and feather like appearance particularly on the ends. Feathered haircuts are designed with movement in mind meaning the hair falls into place more effortlessly. One of the upsides to feathered layers is their ability to benefit your hairs natural texture. Irrespective whether hair is straight, wave or curl, feathering your layers allows your haircut to move more freely without feeling too rigid. The ends of the hair are shaped to appear wispy rather than blunt and this makes for a more relaxed style.
Feathered layers can be worn in various ways from classic to a voluminous blow dry for a bouncy and typically flicked out effect (most Google examples show the latter). For a more modern take on feathered layers, they can be styled for a beachy, effortless look which is more commonplace and if you are unsure, ask your Stylist if feathered layers could work for your personal style.
What are the benefits of feathered layers?
If you want something low-maintenance there are worse choices than feathered layers given their main advantage is their ability to create movement without disrupting your haircut too much and this can grow out gracefully. Unlike choppy or heavily structured layers, feathered layers maintain a more natural, flowing effect, making them easy to style and care for day-to-day.
Something which isn’t spoken of enough, yet feathered layers are a positive when it comes to framing facial features. Where feathering softens the edges of the hair, it can soften cheekbones and jawlines in a way that feels effortless and natural. Feathered layers have a way of complementing facial features without appearing too harsh which is a massive plus point.
Conclusion
Feathered layers are very stylish and highly effective when creating elegant haircuts renown for their softness, movement and lightweight appeal. This is achieved by cutting the hair in such a way to create an ‘airiness’ towards the ends of the hair resulting in a haircut that effortlessly flows through the addition of much needed texture.
