What are feathered layers?

Feathered layers are a type of layering that help to create feather-like ends of the hair. Traditional longer layers help with movement and offer a more structured look whereas feathered layers are cut with a view to blending and softening the edges for a more flowing end result. Historically ‘throwback’ haircuts utilise feathering as a means to creating a classic style; feathering was really popular in the 70’s and 80’s (Google Farrah Fawett as an example).

The term feathering relates to how the hair visually ‘fans out’ toward the ends. How do feathered layers differ from longer layers?
