Will highlights hide my grey?

The Wisteria Avenue Journal

Highlights to hide greys in Abingdon

Highlights work extremely well with grey hair and if managed well, grey hair can look stylish and effortlessly elegant. However what highlights are and how they can work with grey is often misunderstood. For women in Oxfordshire, grey hair can be stylishly and effortlessly elegant. Highlights remain a popular choice for blending greys, but many clients regularly ask whether highlights completely cover my greys?

Highlights can’t offer complete coverage like a tint (one colour all over), however they do something different and arguably more effective. Highlights are able to create soft dimension,  a natural look all while ensuring that greys are well disguised and blended to create a more natural looking regrowth, adding dimension through the addition of complimentary colours all whilst looking amazing. In this blog we’ll walk through how highlights can hide greys in a more meaningful way and how they could work for you.

Hiding greys with highlights FAQ’s

What are highlights?

Highlights are when your Stylist takes sections of your hair, lightening them to create lightness without covering your whole head. Highlights can be more or less striking, subtle, elegant, modern, eye-catching, different colours, soft, or anything and everything in-between! Unlike a full head colour (a tint, which is the same colour covering every hair strand), highlights are strategically placed to brighten and add depth to your natural hair colour.

Types of highlights:

  1. Traditional highlights: Applied in thicker sections for a bold, defined look.
  2. Babylights: Babylights are finer, more delicate highlights that mimic the soft, natural sun-kissed effect of childhood hair. These are arguably the most popular.
  3. Balayage: A gradual sun-kissed effect from the mid to ends of the hair. A much softer regrowth, however not effective at covering greys.

If you want to go the other way, there are methods to achieve grey hair.

Can highlights cover greys completely?

Highlights will never offer complete coverage however it’s important to distinguish the differences between what highlights do, don’t do and where highlights can help. The first thing that your Stylist will seek to identify is the concentration of greys and your level of sensitivity. In most cases, there are options to tailor services to your choosing. For example if your greys are focused solely at the temple and nowhere else, the conversation would differ above a client with 20% greys across your full head.

When do highlights work for grey hair:

  • Highlights work to blend grey hair. Your colour choice matters; for example if you’re 80-100% grey, a few lowlights (a slightly darker shade) can work really well to increase the frequency of darker colours against the grey. Whereas if you’re only partially grey, a mix of up to three colours can prove highlight effect to ‘blur’ the grey. With some well placed highlights, greys can be seen as ‘blondes’.
  • Highlights (and lowlights) work well to create dimension. When introducing additional shades in the form of highlights, the percentage of greys reduce however the focus is shifted to the highlights rather than your grey hairs.

How can I completely cover my greys?

For complete coverage you have two options; you can either tint your hair one colour, also known as an ‘all over colour’. Alternatively some clients highlight their hair and then ‘tint’ their roots. This option presents with the benefit of a highlighted look with no greys showing at the root area. This option is arguably more common than full head tints yet less popular than just highlights on their own. For more information on highlights and lowlights, this may help.

How do highlights blend greys?

Well blended highlights consists of the right colour (or colours) and the right application. For example, babylights (much more delicate highlights) with a colour highlight which is a couple of shades lighter than your base colour can blend seamlessly, whereas thicker highlights may not blend quite so well, however they will be more noticeable. If you’re unsure if there is a difference between highlights and babylights, this blog may help.

Conclusion

Whilst highlights won’t cover all greys, they are the most popular choice amongst clients who are looking to blend greys discreetly. They are highly effective, very popular and they offer the best balance between cost, frequency of appointment and in our view how they look. So while highlights won’t completely conceal greys, they can beautifully disguise them, creating a soft, natural look that enhances your hair’s dimension and texture.
