Tint Maintenance FAQ's
What are the benefits of a tint?
A hair tint is an all over hair colour that covers every strand of hair making it highly effective for complete hair colour changes of if your motivation is to cover 100% of grey hairs. Tints too can be semi-permanent or permanent colour treatment and take your hair in a completely different direction whether it be blonde, brown, red, copper or even violet. However it’s important to consider that unlike bleach which strips pigment from the hair (thus taking you lighter), a tint works by depositing colour and can only take you darker.
Tints can really change your appearance and convey something entirely different. They are both highly versatile and represent by far the most effective choice at covering 100% of grey hairs from root to ends. Additionally, tinted hair often appears shinier and healthier, as many modern formulas contain conditioning agents that nourish the hair while adding colour.
Are tints cost effective?
Tints often represent the most cost-effective option when considering the cost breakdown per each appointment particularly when compared to longer appointments like highlights or balayage. The reason for this is that tinting whilst important to execute, carry fewer overheads and consequently are more cost effective.
Having said that, tints cover every strand of hair and therefore some colours can grow out much less naturally than others and therefore whilst individual appointments remain cost-efficient, more regular appointments can mean that you aren’t saving as much money by opting for a tint. The frequency of appointment matters more than anything, however if you are tinting regularly, a tint regrowth (a short and cheaper appointment type) is recommended.
It’s too worth noting that how cost effective tints are can too dependent on how well your colour is maintained away from the salon. Colours such as reds and violets are more susceptible to fade and therefore your management of products, frequency of washing and ensuring your hair is sufficiently moisturised is paramount.
If you’ve not had your hair coloured before, this blog can help you make a more educated choice.
How can you look after a tint at home?
Proper at-home care is essential to keeping your tinted hair looking fresh and vibrant between salon visits. Here are some key tips:
- Shampoo & Conditioner: Budget shampoo’s can strip colour from hair much more readily than premium products. Whilst the market for hair products can seem overwhelming, more favourable shampoo and conditioners can really help.
- Frequency of washing: Even if you’re washing your hair with the best products, if you’re washing your hair every day it will inevitably strip the colour much more readily. Try to wash your hair no more than every other day.
- Avoid hot water: Hot water open the hair cuticle (think of cuticles like little pockets). When hair is coloured, those pockets fill and seal thus changing your hair colour. Hot water can open the cuticle allowing colour to escape. Instead, rinse your hair with lukewarm or cool water to help maintain vibrancy.
- Heat styling: We see heat damage regularly. Avoid or minimise direct heat (particularly without heat protection) when using straighteners or similar.
- Treatments: This is perhaps of lesser importance, however many salons (not all) will carry a range of amazing and vastly more effective products and treatments that you will be unlikely to source from shops. We recommend the K-PAK Four Step Hair Repair Treatment. As of writing there is nothing remotely comparable and a super option if you are seeking to recover or reinvigorate hair. It works fantastically for hair colour too!
Conclusion
Tinted hair is a highly effective means to changing your overall appearance as a one-off and reasonably cost-effectively. It too is great if your motivation is to cover every strand of hair, particularly when considering grey coverage. There is however two primary incentives; firstly ensure you find a routine that works for you and that you can work to consistently (consistency is crucial with tints) and secondly find a set of products that help you to maintain your hair colour with favourable shampoo’s and conditioners that support the lifespan of your colour.
If you are feeling lost in what could work best for you, leave it to us. Our consultations work through any question you might have, logistics and we too make recommendations based upon your lifestyle and hair type.
