Wisteria Avenue is a truly independent, owner-led hair salon in central Abingdon, Oxfordshire — open since 2018 in a Grade II Listed building on East St. Helen Street. Our team of four stylists has more than 90 years of combined salon experience. Regular clients come from across south Oxfordshire — Abingdon, Oxford, Didcot, Wantage and Faringdon — and specialist clients for curly haircuts, perms and highlights travel from Wycombe, Reading, Swindon, London and beyond. We understand that hair salon experiences can sometimes feel intimidating, so we've built ours to feel the opposite — consultation-first, in plain English, without pressure.
For most clients, the work is cuts and colour. Ladies haircuts range from maintenance trims to full restyles, shaped around how you actually wear your hair. Men's haircuts are about the cut, not razor work. Specialist curly haircuts get cut dry — they're now almost half our cutting appointments. Colour spans balayage and highlights through to tints and full colour correction, always preceded by a free consultation and skin test.
Other clients come to us for what we've made a particular focus: perms, hair extensions, hair smoothing treatments, and men's hair systems fitted privately on our first floor.
Spread across two floors, our ground floor boutique hairdressers caters to regular cutting and colouring clients. Upstairs, we offer a more bespoke and personal service — men's hair systems, clients with autism, LGBTQ+ friendly appointments, hijab-friendly hair appointments, silent hair appointments, and anyone seeking quiet away from the ground floor. No additional cost for one-to-one upstairs appointments.
What makes Wisteria different: we still do perms (averaging one a day last year) when many Oxfordshire salons no longer offer them; our private upstairs floor was built specifically for hair systems, silent and one-to-one appointments; and more than 80% of our clients book again. Balayage, foils, tints, toners and corrections — anything from a maintenance touch-up to full colour transformation. A free skin test is always included before any colour service.
Cuts that grow out well. From maintenance trims to full restyles, the wash-cut-blow-dry is our most-booked appointment — but we'll match the service to what your hair actually needs, not just what you originally booked.
Scissor work, clipper work, and proper attention to the cut — not a quick crop. For men with thicker, finer or curly hair, paired with stylists who actually know how to handle each.
Wash, condition, dry, style — no cut. The treat appointment for weddings, occasions, or just wanting to feel polished mid-week.
We still do perms — averaging one a day last year, when many Oxfordshire salons no longer offer them. Body wave, spiral, beach wave, or the Korean K-Perm we've been getting more requests for. Consultation first if it's your first perm.
Custom-matched hair systems fitted privately in our upstairs space. By consultation only — a private, no-obligation conversation comes first, and the consultation itself is always free.

Cuts for under-12s. Extra time built in for first-time visits or anxious little ones — tell us at booking if your child is nervous about the salon, and we'll adjust accordingly.

Every hair appointment includes a consultation as part of the booking. Colour, perm, treatment and extension appointments usually involve a separate advance consultation because the timing and approach depend on the outcome. Yes to haircuts — we're stylists rather than traditional barbers, so the focus is on the cut itself rather than wet shaves or razor work. Yes. Hair systems are fitted privately on our first floor — a separate, enclosed space with its own access, designed for discretion and one-on-one appointments. Every system starts with a free consultation. More on our men's hair systems page.
Yes to all four. Let us know before booking — call, WhatsApp or email — and we'll arrange the right setup. Our first-floor space is designed for quieter, one-on-one appointments away from the ground floor, with reduced noise and footfall. No additional cost for one-to-one appointments.
Yes — last year we averaged one perm a day. Many salons no longer offer perms because the technique demands ongoing practice; we still do them often enough to stay sharp. Beach wave, spiral, volume, and men's perms all available. More on our perms page.
Yes — we stock JOICO and 72 Hair products. Our stylists recommend products specific to your hair type and any concerns discussed during your appointment.
Not currently — our Abingdon salon is our only location. Plenty of our clients commute from Didcot, Wantage, Faringdon, and surrounding areas though.
