What's the cheapest hair colour I can get in Abingdon?

Choosing a new hair colour can be exciting, but for many, the cost of a salon appointment if you are new to the world of hair colour can appear expensive at first glance. With average hair colour prices exceeding £100, it can become a chore however it doesn’t need to be.

In recent months we delivered someones first hair colour (she was 93 years old!). The opportunity to schedule something which was cost efficient, added some definition without going overboard, broke up a block colour and required little to no upkeep is highly beneficial. There are affordable hair colouring options, sometimes you just need to dig a little deeper!

In our daily blog, we’ll explore the most budget-friendly hair colour options, what this looks like, the pros and cons, and what the alternatives are. Whether you visit the salon once a year or every few months, there’s a way to achieve a heathy colour to suit all budgets.

If you are looking for a new hair colour but want to push your budget to go further, a balayage or highlights might offer better value.

Finally, if you’re new to the salon and not sure how to get the most value from your next hair colour appointment, call or send a WhatsApp message on 01235 534705.

Cheap Hair Colour FAQ's

What is the cheapest hair colour option?

There is a caveat to this; If you have multiple hair colours/it’s a colour correctional appointment then sadly this will unlikely represent a helpful suggestion. That being said, if you’re new to hair colour, you have virgin hair, you have a balayage, tint, existing grown out highlights or similar, then this is a real winner if you’re working to a budget or you just want something to brighten your hair or offer some depth to your existing colour with the introduction of darker pieces. If you don’t know what colours would work for you, don’t worry. Most people don’t!

For clients that don’t need a balayage or a full head of highlights, if an easy hair colour is the perfect option we charge by the foil. Anything from 5 up to 10 foils charged at £5 per foil represents outstanding value for money. The colour usually ranges in £25-£50 for the application (excluding the option of a haircut or blow dry), however the benefits are significant. Strategically placing foils around the face can lighten or add depth in a way that the regrowth is largely unnoticeable. You can achieve subtle sunkissed ends, depth or the money piece (lighter pieces that frame your face) at little expense.

This option represents something a lot of salons will not offer nor will they market. We ourselves don’t publish the opportunity to book this appointment online, however if you are looking to keep costs to a minimum and you’re tired of regular upkeep, if this sounds appealing just let us know. Just call or WhatsApp the salon on 01235 534705 to enquire.

How does charging by the foil work?

A full head foils on average represents about 60 foils plus. This offers clients near complete coverage, radically changing your hairs colour. The upside (if you want to be lighter, highlights or something slightly darker, lowlights) is that it does just that, however the regrowth is obviously much more visible (given the volume of foils applied). This can also prove costly too, particularly with the upkeep, whereas charging by the foil (up to 10) is a much more cost effective alternative that allows you to add a few pops of colour where it will make the most impact.

Here’s an example of a recent client visit:

  • Client profile: Rachel lives a busy lifestyle. She is always on the go and doesn’t plan ahead for hair appointments given work and at home commitments. She works 45 hour weeks and doesn’t invest much in her hair. She hasn’t coloured her hair in a few years aside from some lightness at the ends.
  • Our Suggestion: We applied 8 foils to break up Rachel’s natural medium brown. Under certain lighting you can see the sun-kissed hair, it’s not overpowering however it offers a clean colour that is sufficiently noticeable without the commitment of needing to visit the salon regularly. Rachel will likely revisit us in 6-12 months. Her total spend on colour was £40 (minus any haircut or blow dry).

What are the benefits of subtlety

Foiling small sections of hair provides several benefits, particularly if you’re trying to keep your costs down:

  • Next Appointment: Fewer foils reduces the pressure to revisit us or another salon. Largely dependent on the placement of your foils, some clients won’t need another visit at all unless they demand it.
  • Appearance: Up to 10 foils can vary. If you want depth, a darker shade might work. If you value a lighter colour towards your face, your stylist can be tactful. Equally, the money piece (those lighter colours at the front) represents roughly 4-6 foils.
  • Affordable: 4 Foils is £20. 10 Foils is £50… It can’t get much cheaper than that!

How often would you need to get your hair done?

By way of comparison, it’s worth noting that full head foils will offer certain benefits that for example paying by the foil won’t. We typically use up to 10 foils as the maximum as anything thereafter the value is reduced. That being said, the comparison below should greatly assist if you’re mulling over what to do next.

  • Up to 10 foils: Perfect for those who want a little something different without the commitment of full highlights. You can go up to six months or even a year between appointments if you’re happy with something that doesn’t tie you into the commitment of regular touch-ups.

  • Full Head of Highlights: A full head of highlights requires maintenance every 2-3 months, which can become costly over time. The obvious benefit is that it offers greater scope for change. In some cases appointments can be stretch out longer, but in this case balayage can be a slightly more cost efficient option by stretching appointments further. If you’re not sure what the differences between balayage and highlights are, this might help.

What are the pros or cons of charging by the foil?

Like any hair service, there are both pros and cons to opting for cheaper colouring techniques. Here’s what to consider:

Pros:

  • Affordability: Charging by the foil is highlight efficient and cost-effective. If you want a second opinion on something more affordable or this if your first time having colour, this could help.
  • Low Maintenance: Minimal foils grow out more naturally, meaning you can stretch the time between appointments and save money on maintenance. As a rule of thumb, the more foils, the harsher/more obvious the regrowth. In most cases, 10 foils aren’t noticeable.

Cons:

  • If you want big change: This won’t be for you. However if you want to start small, it’s a healthy first step.

Conclusion - How to achieve a cost effective hair colour option

A new colour doesn’t always need to come with a big price tag. If you choose up to 10 foils, the upkeep is minimal, it’s budget friendly and it keeps the door option for future colour changes without the commitment of getting tied down to something. Your Stylist will be your greatest allay; work with them and they can usually work with you to achieve something within your budget.
