Autism-friendly hair appointments in Abingdon, Oxfordshire.
For some autistic people, a trip to the hair salon can be genuinely difficult — whether that’s getting through the door in the first place, or a real discomfort with someone touching their hair. The typical salon environment can be overwhelming: bright lighting, several conversations happening at once, unfamiliar smells, and the close physical contact a haircut requires. For some, it’s a hurdle high enough to avoid the salon entirely.
At Wisteria Avenue we understand those difficulties, and we regularly support clients who find salon visits challenging. We’ve taken guidance over the years from our existing autistic clients and from the work of the National Autistic Society to make sure the way we run autism-friendly appointments reflects what actually helps — not assumptions about what we think might.
What we do differently.
Concrete things, rather than a vague promise of “being understanding”:
A separate, quieter space. Our first-floor room is used for one-on-one appointments — minimal footfall, rarely any other clients, and a noticeably calmer sound environment than the main salon downstairs. Lighting and music can be adjusted to whatever works for you. The same space is where we host our silent hair appointments and men’s hair systems consultations.
Quieter time-of-week slots. Some days are naturally quieter than others — typically Tuesdays and early Wednesdays. We can book autism-friendly appointments at those times so the wider salon environment is calmer too.
One stylist throughout. Unlike some salons where the wash, cut, and styling rotate between staff, you stay with the same stylist for the entire appointment. Continuity matters when someone’s working hard to feel comfortable in the chair, and we’d never break that.
A pre-appointment conversation. Before your first visit, we’d ask you to call or WhatsApp us on 01235 534705 so we can understand what helps and what doesn’t — sensory things to avoid, whether you’d like the appointment in silence, whether you have a routine that needs preserving. The more we know, the better the appointment will be.
A look around beforehand, if it helps. Some clients prefer to visit the salon — and specifically the upstairs space — before booking, just to see the environment and meet the stylist. We’re happy to arrange that, usually outside opening hours so the salon is quieter.
Companions welcome. If having a parent, partner, or friend in the appointment with you helps, that’s fine. We’re a small salon, so we’d ask in advance so we can plan for it, but it’s not a problem.
No extra charge. Autism-friendly appointments are priced the same as standard appointments. The accommodations are a preference, not a premium product.
Autism-friendly or silent appointment — which fits better?
The two overlap but they’re not the same.
A silent hair appointment is about not making conversation. Your stylist won’t initiate small talk; the appointment runs in the calm of the work itself. Booking is straightforward — just mention it when you book. Common reasons clients ask for silent appointments include having had a long week, social anxiety, sensory sensitivities, or simply preferring quiet.
An autism-friendly appointment wraps silence into a broader set of accommodations — the first-floor space, quieter times of the week, sensory adjustments, and the pre-appointment conversation to understand your specific needs. It’s slightly more involved to book because we ask for that conversation first, but the appointment itself is built around what works for you.
There’s no right answer — what matters is which fits. Many autistic clients book one or the other depending on the day, the energy they have, and the kind of appointment they need.
Booking your appointment.
Booking is most reliable by phone or WhatsApp on 01235 534705, especially for a first visit — that conversation is what lets us prepare properly. Email at bookings@wisteriaavenue.co.uk is fine too if phone calls are something you’d rather avoid; we’ll respond by whichever channel you prefer. Online booking is available at wisteriaavenue.co.uk/bookings, but we’d usually suggest at least one message to us first so we can prepare the right time slot and stylist.
Whatever the request, you won’t be the first — others have come to us with all kinds of needs and found something that works.
