Balayage Appointments in Abingdon
Wisteria Avenue is a balayage hair salon. In our Abingdon hairdressers, this is our most popular and most maintenance-free hair colour service. Balayage hair colour technique is a great way to enhance your natural hair shade and hairstyle. A subtle introduction of a lighter shade to make your hair look sun-kissed makes a huge difference. Balayage is also offers the most maintenance-free colour option of any in-salon hair colour service!
Please note: If you have not had your hair coloured with us before, we will need to undertake a skin test.
If you’re looking for more lightness, our highlights service page could help.
What does a balayage look like?
Balayage is a highly maintainable colour service offering sun-kissed hair without the ongoing maintenance and cost of highlights. The benefits greatly outweigh the drawbacks with the average frequency of appointments typically varying between 2-4 appointments annually with the right sort of balayage.
Example Balayage
What does it mean?
- Natural Hair: This is your natural hair colour. Imagine your hair without any hair colour, highlights or balayage. This is your original colour before any colour or bleach. This can still be found from the root area all the way through the hair, between the highlighted hair. This is why you can still see two colours where we have identified ‘babylights’.
- The Blend: What we mean by the blend is where the balayage starts. Because balayage is designed to look sun-kissed, sun-kissed hair is natural looking meaning that lightened hair won’t all start from the same place. Typically the balayage is subtle with some of the lighter pieces introduced around the top of the ear. Some pieces will be higher than this and others pieces of hair lightened slightly lower to offer a much more subtle blend.
- Babylights: Babylights can be described as delicate or tiny highlights running through the hair. They don’t have to be, this balayage displays babylights as one example. These can be described as the lighter pieces running through the hair in balayage form. Modern balayages typically incorporate some sort of babylights. These offer a much more defined blend and a more intricate balayage/sun-kissed feel.
- Saturated Ends: The ends of the hair tend to appear lighter the more the hair is balayaged. In simpler terms, the more you balayage the more lighter pieces are introduced. This isn’t always the case, however more often than not the hair will become gradually lighter from the start of the blend to the saturated ends as labelled.
Balayage FAQ's
What is a balayage?
Balayage is one of the most sought-after hair colour techniques and our most popular colour service of all, and for good reason. This French word, meaning “to sweep” or “to paint,” given the application of lighter pieces are often hand painted to the ends of the hair. The balayage technique creates a natural, sun-kissed effect. If you are looking for something low-maintenance yet strikingly beautiful look, balayage is for you!
Balayage can be considered as highlights that are easiest to maintain. Balayage is the tactful placement of colour to specific sections of the hair, allowing for a softer, more blended finish focusing mainly on the mid-lengths and ends. The result is a natural and multi-dimensional effect that mimics the way the sun naturally lightens hair over time.
Balayage or Ombre?
Balayage is usually painted onto your hair (typically but not always) from the top of the ear with subtle pieces for a more sun-kissed look. Ombre is similar however the ends become more saturated. You’ll see natural hair colour at the ends of hair with a balayage, whereas an ombre is 100% lighter at the ends. If you’re unsure which option to go for, our in-salon will help you at the consultation.
Why is balayage so popular?
Balayage is popular for several reasons. Firstly, it’s incredibly low-maintenance by the standards of hair colour. Compared to something like a tint (which requires touch ups every 4-6 weeks), balayages requirement maintenance every 3-4 months. It’s also natural looking and the sun-kissed effect appeals to many due to its obvious appeal. Additionally, balayage works well on most hair lengths and types,.
What is the difference between balayage and highlights?
If you are unsure of the differences, our consultations offer helpful pointers to support your decision. Balayage and highlights fundamentally differ in application and outcome. In summary, highlights are exclusively applied to the root area whereas balayage isn’t. The balayage usually involves hand-painting colour (or bleach) onto the hair from different sections from the top of the ear for a softer, more natural transition between shades. Highlights, on the other hand utilise foils to create a more uniformed and defined colour exclusively from the root area. Balayage tends to grow out more gracefully, requiring less maintenance than traditional highlights, however highlights whilst less maintainable offer a amore striking visual.
What does a balayage do to your hair?
Balayage adds dimension by creating a gradual transition from darker to lighter tones from the roots to ends. Bleach will be applied either free-hand or between foils before being toned for a bespoke colour. The end result is aa sun-kissed low maintenance hair colour.
What is the downside to balayage?
It won’t ever be highlights. If your end goal is to be as light and/or bright as possible, balayage is unlikely to be for you. However, if you are looking for something more sun-kissed and subtle, this is a great option.
What does a balayage cost?
Looking for a balayage near me? The cost of balayage is usually based on factors such as hair length, hair type, condition and starting point. It can to a lesser extent vary based on factors such as location (salons closer to London will attract a higher price point given their increased overheads), the experience of the stylist, and the salon itself.
Most balayages are priced identically, however the range is much wider than most colour services and can typically range from £135 – £250. At Wisteria Avenue in 2023, the average cost was £180 with some coming in cheaper and some coming in more expensive.

Every hair colour service, whether it’s balayage or not, requires both a skin test and consultation. These essential steps ensure the safety of the colouring process and ascertain its suitability for your needs.
Consequently, a consultation ensures you select the optimal service tailored to your preferences. Occasionally, clients book services that might not align with their requirements, and a consultation helps shed light on the best options.
Balayages aren’t the same for every client.
We don’t expect clients to know the terminology of every type of balayage! However, pictures always help. If you have a vision in mind, we encourage you to bring this with you to your consultation.
Usually the differences between balayages don’t affect the price too much. For example, the ‘money piece’ is a popular addition right now. This is a great option yet doesn’t affect the price.
Balayage techniques vary depending on each client.
We don’t assume clients to be familiar with all balayage terms! However, visual references are invaluable. If you have a specific look in mind, we highly recommend bringing pictures to your consultation.
Typically, the variations in balayage styles don’t significantly impact the pricing. For instance, the ‘money piece’ trend is currently popular and is a fantastic addition that doesn’t alter the pricing.
We occasionally run promotional offers and discounts for select hair colour and haircut services.
These often carry a timeframe before they are invalid and are at the discretion of the salon.
Usually these do not run across December, however if you are unsure please check with the hair salon before booking.
All our Stylists are at least 10 years qualified.
Our consultations typically help to indicate whether what you are looking for is both achievable and deliverable in one session.
Part of the value of a consultation is to better understand what your hair looks like in person, how it feels when touched and what the history of the hair is.
Sometimes discussing outcomes is more helpful when helping clients to understand what work is needed and what is required to achieve your hair goals.
It’s possible, though much of the time your Stylist won’t be able to provide accurate answers to questions around colour until they can understand how it feels, what it looks like and what the history of the hair is.
