Skin Fades in Abingdon
Skin fades are a popular choice for men and represent one of the main ‘go to’s’ for barbershops and salons alike. Whilst not every Stylist and Barber can deliver a skin fade, those that can may opt for a razor whilst others may use clippers and scissors to achieve a blend with pros and cons to both.
In our daily blog we cover all aspects of the skin fade from what exactly a skin fade is, how maintainable it is all the way down to whether it’s right for you!
If you are considering something different, our gents haircutting service page can help. Finally, if you’re new to the salon and not sure how to get the most value from your next appointment, need a consultation or would value a conversation before booking, call or send a WhatsApp message on 01235 534705.
Skin Fade FAQ's
What is a skin fade?
A skin fade is quite literally a type of haircut that is extremely short initially on the sides that it exposes the skin. Many fades start longer at the top, gradually becoming shorter on the back and sides whereas a skin fade, fades much shorter (effectively to ‘zero’ on the clippers). This seamless blend can prove highly effective on many hair types, particularly those sporting facial hair with the step between the skin and the contrast of the commencement of the beard proving very popular. Whilst this is just one example, skin fades can be more or less dramatic and tailored to suit an edgy look and in many cases even a professional look appropriate for the workplace. Skin fades don’t all need to look the same from one to the next. Low skin fades start the shortest point just above the neckline whereas high skin fades begin much higher on the head, creating a more dramatic and sculpted appearance. Finally, mid skin fades sit somewhere in between which is arguably the most professional looking of any skin fade striking a healthy balance between something ‘different’ and something appropriate for the workplace.
How short is a skin fade?
The name is a bit of a giveaway! A skin fade quite literally gets right down to your skin at the very bottom of the back and sides of your hair. Many Stylists or Barbers with use a combination of a foil shaver, a razor or clippers with no guard. The fade from this point then blends upwards into longer hair thus creating the fade (long to short).
Is a skin fade easy to maintain?
A fade is reasonably easy to maintain and if you want it to look sharp, tidy and on-point, many salons (ourselves included) and barbershops offer a service whereby they will touch up the sides every 2-3 weeks if your intention is to maintain your chosen look. However if every 2-3 weeks represents too much upkeep, leaving your skin fade to grow out will look very natural and because the sides are so short, within a month it will still look like a well kept fade (just longer than a skin fade).
Whilst this is a general overview, the eventual overall maintenance depends on two things; your overall length of hair once cut and the speed at which your hair grows (this is on average 0.5 inches every four weeks) so there is no reason why a fade can’t grow out for a few weeks before needing a further haircut 4-6 weeks later). For the maximum time between hair appointments, a low fade can balance nicely whereas mid to high fades will generally loose their shape more quickly.
How do I know if a skin fade will suit me?
Whilst skin fades can work for many, it’s worth considering your face shape and hair type. Skin fades can elongate the face and therefore work well with rounder or square faces as they present the illusion of a more all round structure. On the other hand, longer face shapes can exaggerate length. Face shape aside, skin fades can otherwise work well with most hair types and this is therefore a huge upside.
In most cases however, the best thing to do is research, establish a ‘look’ that you like and rather than investing too much in one or two pictures of skin fades, show your Stylist or Barber at your next appointment. Experience will show its benefit during a consultation and a Stylist will be able to help you weigh up which fade might work best for you (low/mid/high), whether a fade is the right choice and how your inspiration picture(s) can possible work for your face shape, hair type and life style considerations. It’s too worth noting that your Stylist or Barber is unlikely to expect you to understand hairdressing terminology so if you are unsure how to ask for something at your next appointment, here’s some helpful tips!
Conclusion
A skin fade is a men’s haircut that combines sharp definition with an edge which makes it a standout choice among many. For the best result, try establishing an idea as to what you like and your chosen Stylist or Barber can discuss options and how this could work for your face shape, hair type and life style. Consultations are best advised and if you are open, transparent and able to effectively communicate your ideas your Stylist or Barber will constructively build upon your motivations, ideal look and everything in-between. Finally, whilst skin fades can require some upkeep, the relationship with your Stylist or Barber to accommodate regular ‘touching up’ appointments every 2-3 weeks when trimming your back and sides can both help. With their support, whilst not all will be accommodating, many help you to mitigate some of your spend by charging you less for ‘in-between’ appointments. For more help with your next haircut, here’s how you can prepare!
