Curly Haircut Information & FAQ's

What does a curly hair appointment look like?

If you have already booked a curly haircut appointment with us, please give us a call. This helps us to prepare for your arrival.

Curly haircut appointments differ considerably from a more traditional ‘Wash, Cut & Blow Dry’, ‘Wash & Cut’ or ‘Restyle’ option. This is both in relation to time, process and what the appointment looks like.

Fundamentally, any appointment (whether colouring, blow drying, cutting, treating or similar) carries with it a consultation. The consultation explores a number of aspects; these include your likes, dislikes, what you hope to achieve, your typical frequency of haircut, what you do for work, your lifestyle, average daily hair routine, whether you have seen any pictures that you like against the advice of your stylist.

The consultation is helpful for a number of reasons. Firstly, it helps your stylist to better understand your thought process and often it helps to fill in gaps in knowledge, make improved suggestions and in some cases make for a better hair appointment. Most importantly, the consultation demands which direction the appointment takes. Where a more traditional haircut would start with a consultation, progressing to a wash, followed by a cut, and finally a blow dry; a curly haircut doesn’t necessarily follow the same routine.

The consultation looks at your curl pattern and several other important factors. As an example, a client with unruly hair who hasn’t received a haircut in several years might explain during the consultation phase that they would like to reduce the length and volume of their hair (given the last appointment was several years ago the volume and length of hair which may need cutting would be substantial). In this case, when factoring in the unruliness it would be wise to initially find a length this client is comfortable alongside addressing the issue of volume, all before any washing has taken place. Thereafter, your Stylist may wash, cut some more, utilise a diffuser before applying the finishing touches by doing more cutting when dry.

Conversely, another client with tighter and a more consistent curly pattern may benefit from an entirely different approach (assuming the end goal is different). There isn’t a set formula for curly hair. Most appointments differ in some way, either in a big or small way. The approach typically varies and we encourage clients booking a curly haircut to schedule a call with us in anticipation to ensure we are able to maximise the curly haircut appointment time.

Some curly haircuts options

  1. The Layered Curly Bob: The layered curly bob is a popular choice for curly hair. Sporting shorter curls at the back, the cut gradually displays longer curls towards the front thus framing your face to draw attention to your curls and shape. It’s a fun yet dynamic look if done well.

  2. The Curly Pixie: If you have curly hair and want to make a statement, this is it! This modern edgy cut edgy is the route to go if you plan to embrace shorter hair.

  3. The Curly Shag: A trendy and effortless haircut that may appeal for thicker, curly hair. This is one to really showcase your personality and the best bit if that it requires little maintenance! Think carefree and bohemian vibe.

  4. The Long Curly Layers: Less statement led, more natural and sophisticated. If this is you, opt for long curly layers to work with your existing curls’ movement and prevent any unwanted bulkiness. The long curly layers create a softer cut.

  • Hydration: Focus on moisture-centric leave-in conditioners and moisturising hair products designed for curly hair. There are an increasing number of these entering the market. Most of these are specialist and can be found in-salon.

  • Plop and diffuse: To enhance your curls, remove excess moisture by ‘plopping’ a towel and using a diffuse to minimise frizz.

  • Avoid brushing dry curls: Try using a wide-tooth comb or your fingers to detangle your curls when wet.

Why are curly haircuts different?

Very simply, they are much more tailored to your curl pattern. That’s not to say any other type of haircut isn’t tailored (it is), rather the structure of the appointment changes more commonly with a curly haircut due to the unique characteristics of curly hair. Different curls require a different ‘formula’, so the end result is much improved and les formulaic. The cutting technique also considers the natural curl pattern. Stylists also typically adopt different cutting methods to cater to the specific needs and structure of a curl ensuring they don’t buckle.

Why are curly haircuts so popular?

A ‘normal haircut’ won’t (no pun intended) cut it on curly hair. With more focus on specialist curly haircutters carving a niche, it makes sense that curly hair clients are savvy with their salon choices.

Historically most Stylists have limited exposure to curly hair. After all, it makes sense. Most Stylists take three years to qualify and most of the time spent training there is little, if any exposure to curly hair. Once qualified, it takes years to become competent in cuts, colours or styling (with exposure) however most qualified Stylists won’t encounter any curly haircuts for years. Simply put, it’s not a skill most Stylists will hone over time, so it is rare. It’s therefore clear to see why the value of curly hairdressers is so valuable.

Which curly haircut works for you?

Every appointment carries with it a consultation. If you are unsure what might suit you, you’re not alone so  don’t feel intimidated by asking what would work best for you! The best curly haircut varies based on individual preferences, face shape, and curl type. In short, we can assess your curl pattern, your style goals, and recommend a personalised cut that complements your style, face shape, maintenance and hair type.

Can you show me how to tame my hair?

Every appointment we show you how to style your hair.

If you’re concerned about unruly hair, there’s an in-salon option called ‘pHrizzy-o-therapy’. This is specifically designed to target unruly, frizzy and unmanageable hair! For more information, see more info.

Our Stylists are experienced with curly hair.

We deliver roughly one curly haircut per day. On a good day we deliver 4+. Compared to most salons that will do one every few months. We take pride in curly haircuts applying different cutting techniques to different curl types and patterns. Our knowledge of curly haircuts means that clients tend to forgo the traditional salon experience for a hair salon-specific curly haircut.

Yes! We stock curly hair products in salon.

Curly haircuts can vary quite significantly in their approach.

The appointment is one hour and in our experience you are best served dedicating as much of that one hour to the cut above all else.

In some more extreme cases, curly hair can be knotted, matted, tangled or dry meaning that a portion of the appointment is spent on detangling rather than cutting. If in your own experience you struggling with detangling, we would suggest washing in advance of your appointment.

In most cases however, no preparation is necessary.

Of course.

If you have a special request relating to your hair colour, we would love to hear from you.

Bookings can be made online here. Alternatively, call 01235 534705.
