Why would I want a silent hair appointment?

When thinking about what a salon experiences looks like, many of us think of hairdressers as Stylists with big personalities, larger than life characters and conversations full of energy. The reality is that a lot of salons aren’t always the same, but salons will do their very best to cater to all tastes with many clients finding social interactions exhausting and small talk energy zapping if not exhausting. Just like most businesses, salons are no different in their efforts to cater to as many people as possible however silent appointments aren’t the easiest to cater to. However that’s problematic; salons are an outlet for those that want to decompress from a busy day or escape the noise of everyday life. Silent appointments can too be ideal for clients who experience sensory sensitivities, anxiety, autism, or stress in social settings.

Our first floor salon offers something very different. Whilst our ground floor salon acts as your more typical salon experience, our first floor enables us with no extra effort to tailor the experience to your preferences within reason. Not everyone enjoys the traditional salon experience of chatting throughout the duration of their appointment and if your preference is an appointment in silence, we can ensure you feel more comfortable in those surroundings.

Does a silent hair appointment require me to talk?

It’s entirely up to you. If you schedule a silent appointment and you feel the urge to talk, feel free! Something you may not have considered is just like everyone, your Stylist will in many instances welcome the silence too and simultaneously be happy to engage in conversation. The biggest difference is that beyond any dialogue in the form of a consultation which directly influences your hair, your Stylist won’t make a concerted effort to talk to you. So whilst this appointment does not require you to talk, that doesn’t mean you can’t if you’d like to!

The vital exchange which is unavoidable is a conversation around your hair. For example if you need layers, a Stylist will need to have this discussion with you, but they won’t ask you what you do for work! Beyond the consultation, there is no pressure nor obligation to talk.

Can I completely switch off?

Silent hair appointments are whatever you want them to be. If you want to completely switch off, you have that opportunity. Unlike a traditional hair appointment where your Stylist might like to build a rapport, get to know you and with music on in the background, a silent hair appointment allows you to fully focus on yourself. So if you choose to clear your mind, sit in peace or read a book, we won’t be offended (in-fact, many of our Stylists value silent appointments for exactly the same reason as you!).

Can I read a book or listen to music?

Absolutely and your Stylist will encourage this. So long as you feel comfortable and there are no obstacles to being able to deliver your chosen service, you are free to decide. So if you’d like to bring a book, listen to music, podcast, work or even close your eyes that choice is entirely with you. Most that choose silent appointments do as as an opportunity for temporary escapism.

As a side note, if you choose to listen to music, audiobook or podcast, wearing wireless earbuds or headphones can be a sensible option. There may be times whereby your Stylist may need to communicate with you about your hair whether that be a question that supports the delivery of your hair appointment.

Can I sit in silence?

Yes! Whatever you decide is absolutely fine nor will we pass judgement. Stylists also often prefer silent time too so don’t be afraid to ask when booking. So whether you prefer to sit in silence, look at your phone, read or listen to something, you are encouraged to. Some clients enjoy using the time with us to close their eyes and switch off.

When booking a silent hair appointment, your stylist will appreciate that this is your time and critically there is no expectation for you to interact beyond what is necessary and without social pressure.
