What is a razor haircut?

The Wisteria Avenue Journal

Razor Haircuts in Abingdon

When you are having your haircut we envision a haircut and your Stylist using scissors, however these is another way. Whilst many salons nor Stylists will be adept with the technique, some salons will incorporate a razor which is a tool that offers greater texture and for certain haircuts it can offer results where hairdressing scissors won’t.

A razor haircut isn’t as common has a scissor cut, however using a razor offers  very different finish. In our blog, our Stylists cover what a razor haircut is, how it differs from a scissor cut and why a razor cut might appeal in time for your next hair appointment.

If you are considering something different, our ladies haircuts service page can help. Finally, if you’re new to the salon and not sure how to get the most value from your next appointment, need a consultation or would value a conversation before booking, call or send a WhatsApp message on 01235 534705.

Razor Haircut FAQ’s

What is a razor haircut?

A razor itself is a hairdressing tool consisting of a straight-edge razor held by a guard which when used by your Stylist gently slices through the hair in a gliding motion at an angle to create a softer and more textured look. Unlike scissors which are most commonly used to achieve a straight, blunt or even layers, the razor offers an alternative to scissors and critically offers and allows for greater movement and an effortless flow when executed correctly.

Further, when using a razor it can be effectively used by your Stylist to reduce weight, add softness, or shape the hair for a more natural look.

What are the differences between a razor and scissor haircut?

The main difference between scissor cuts and razor cuts lies in the finish. A scissor cut offers cleaner and defined lines (think a one length bob, for example). On the other hand razor cuts can be applied in full or part of a haircut to create more movement and texture. Razor cuts are ideal because they don’t leave blunt edges but rather they favour a more relaxed and lived in look.

Razor cuts are highlight effective at removing bulk and this can be achieved by thinning the hair. It’s too effective for shaping around the face, blending layers and generally softening haircuts overall.

When would you use a razor to cut hair?

There’s usually one of two motivations for a Stylist using a razor to cut your hair. The first is to create a softness to the overall cut, remove weight or creating a lived-in look. The second reason is that certain haircuts like wolf cuts or butterfly cuts can sometimes (but not always) justify it given they can sometimes benefit from a razor cut above one which takes advantage of scissors.

When it comes to achieving a certain style or look, the razor is a necessary tool that whilst scissors can be used, certain hair types and even clients will have a preference for a razor. That being said it’s important to note that certain hair types won’t necessarily respond well to the use of a razor. For example particularly fine hair, damaged or over processed hair won’t always be compatible with a razor. In these instances scissor cuts are generally the preferred method of cutting.

Can a razor add texture?

Yes, a razor can add texture. In-fact one of the biggest benefits of a razor is that it adds texture alongside depth and dimension. Where hair is visibly flat, a razor haircut can introduce much needed lift and movement and on medium to thick hair, it’s highly effective. It’s also worth noting that not every Stylist will be equipped to cut using a razor so if you are specifically looking for a razor haircut, your best option is to speak with your chosen salon in anticipation of your haircut appointment.

Conclusion

A razor haircut isn’t for everyone, but it has its place so when used on the right hair type with the right reasons (with the right Stylist) it can add so much to an otherwise ordinary haircut. It offers clients softness, movement and a lived-in look with an undeniable likability. Moreover, the razor cutting technique is especially useful for removing weight, adding shape, and encouraging hair to fall naturally with minimal effort.
