Bixie Haircut FAQ's
What is a bixie haircut?
The bixie is a hybrid haircut, a cross between a pixie cut and a bob cut. The cut boasts the softness and shape of a bob alongside the style and texture of a pixie cut. Whilst the bixie isn’t the first haircut that you will hear when speaking about a new style, it’s history dates back to the 1990’s and in more recent times has caught wind and has experienced a small resurgence among a few. Visually the haircut features short, choppy layers and sits between the jawline and the nape of the neck.
What makes the bixie unlike any other style is that it’s a blend of two haircuts in one. The pixie is lightweight and it takes from the bob the ability to frame the face more effectively.
What does a bixie haircut look like?
Visually the bixie haircut is famed for its combination of volume, movement, and shape. The cut can take on many forms, typically boasting shorter layers through the back and crown to give it more lift and longer pieces at the from of sides which benefit the face through the addition dimension.
From the perspective of styling your bixie, it does offer some versatility. Firstly if you prefer to opt for a smoother finish, it can be just that. Alternatively a rough dry can create a more relaxed (even edgy) look and on curly hair the bixie haircut can take on a more textured and voluminous shape.
Finally, one of the other big features of the bixie is the fringe or face-framing pieces however as is common with the bixie, these often vary from haircut-to-haircut. For example if you want to soften your jawline, a sweeping fringe can work well while a choppier look can give your haircut more of an edge if you value style.
Is a bixie haircut easy to maintain?
A bixie haircut is reasonably easy to maintain however it’s important to work with your Stylist to achieve this and your day-to-day styling and how you want to present your bixie cut is really important. While the bixie cut is somewhat structured (and it will need regular haircuts to maintain its shape, it does tend to fall into place each morning which means you can to a degree achieve your style without much work. This is particularly the case if you can rely on a natural wave or curl that enhances your bixie.
On average you will be looking at a haircut to maintain your bixie every 6-8 weeks. You will typically find that shorter styles require more appointments to maintain its shape, however the time investment each morning can even go as far as allowing it to dry naturally and using your hands to find your style and shape (even using your fingers can prove really effective).
How should I ask for a bixie haircut?
As with any haircut, be sure to communicate your ideas through visual examples (just Google ‘bixie haircut’) and try to articulate your ideas as best that you can. Clear and concise communication is wise, and try not to focus only on the benefits but also what you don’t like is hugely important to your Stylist. Your Stylist will most likely probe, asking you questions about your existing hair, lifestyle, work and day-to-day maintenance.
Your Stylist will also encourage you to avoid using complicated hairdressing jargon and to express your thoughts as freely as possible. Try to say things like ‘something short than a bob but not as short as a pixie’. This clearly outlines the length of hair at each point (neither too short nor too long). You can say things like ‘something with layers for softer look (or edgier look). These types of details can both assist your Stylist whilst also helping your eventual haircut. Here are some additional tips to help you ask for your perfect haircut.
Conclusion
The bixie haircut isn’t hugely popular though much of this can be attributed to its lack of awareness both in salon and in any media references. The haircut is often referred to as something else (usually referencing ‘bob’ or ‘pixie’). That being said, in isolation the bixie represents both a stylish and practical choice for anyone looking to embrace shorter hair without going ultra-cropped. It;’s playful, offers a unique look and some versatility particularly if you’re caught between looking neither a bob nor pixie!
