Butterfly haircuts in Abingdon

A butterfly haircut is recognisable for its soft, fluttering layers that resemble the subtly of butterfly wings. The butterfly haircut is a winner and one which your Stylist may even suggest if your hair could benefit from volume, face-framing layers while retaining length. This haircut presents a layered effect that is shorter around the face whilst retaining length at the back.

In our latest daily blog, our Stylists explore what a butterfly haircut is, what is looks like and how you can ask for a butterfly haircut!

If you are considering something different, our ladies haircutting service page can help. Finally, if you’re new to the salon and not sure how to get the most value from your next appointment, need a consultation or would value a conversation before booking, call or send a WhatsApp message on 01235 534705.

Butterfly Haircut FAQ's

What is a butterfly haircut?

The butterfly haircut is a popular haircut that consists of layers which are specifically cut to add softness, volume, and shape (particularly around the face). The butterfly cut is named in reference to the cut which emphasises a ‘fluttering wing’ effect when styled. When cutting, your Stylist will add two types of layering; shorter layers are concentrated around the crown and face, often falling at chin or collarbone level, while longer layers remain beneath, flowing past the shoulders.

This resulting layers applied creates a soft length at the back and a lighter look at the front. If your motivation is the illusion of shorter hair without the commitment of cutting off all your length, the butterfly cut is ideal.

What does a butterfly haircut look like?

Visually the butterfly cut looks like the cascading wings of a butterfly when styled. The layers create movement and lightness, particularly at the front of the haircut which is designed specifically to create lightness and the illusion of a shorter cut around the face. These shorter layers typically curve away from the face, creating softness and a sense of airiness. On the other hand, the side and back are longer layers.

The styling with the butterfly cut is everything. In-salon we tend to use a round brush and hairdryer for a soft bounce. If allowed to air-dry, the ‘vibe’ is a relaxed style and the butterfly cut can be adapted with the help of your Stylist to suit your hairs natural texture and personal styling preferences.

Is a butterfly haircut easy to maintain?

The butterfly haircut is reasonably easy to maintain and without many styling options from air drying to styling with hot tools like curling iron, hairdryer or straighteners, the butterfly cut represents a demand-free haircut. That being said, one of the components that will require additional or less commitment is your hair type and texture. For clients with naturally thick or textured hair, the layers help to remove excess weight and encourage better shape, often making the style more manageable though this can sometimes require a little more day-to-day intervention when it comes to styling. On the other hand, clients with finer hair can benefit from the introduction of layers that create the illusion of volume which if your hair behaves itself, can be considered largely maintenance-free!

The butterfly cut can conceivably be cut every 6-12 weeks on average dependent upon the rate of your hair growth, your hair texture and how you like to present your hair day-to-day. If you’re unsure why you should get your haircut this often, here’s more information. For example by keeping the shorter layers cut to shape helps to preserve the signature butterfly shape, especially around the face.

How should I ask for a butterfly haircut?

If you’re unsure how to ask for a butterfly haircut, here’s some top tips of things to consider in anticipation of your upcoming haircut appointment. As with any haircut (especially layered ones), your best option is to try to communicate your ideas without using any complicated hairdressing jargon. Pictures of previous haircuts that you have had they have worked for you or even haircuts from Instagram or similar can work well too, particularly if you are able to advise what you like about each. Each haircut appointment with us comes with a consultation, and whilst your Stylist will do their utmost to challenge you and understand your requirements, they may too explain how your request can be improved or tailored to suit your needs so don’t expect the exact same haircut and style (given it may need to be adapted to suit your hair type, texture and anticipated lifestyle/maintenance).

Conclusion

The butterfly haircut appeals for both its beauty and ease of maintenance. It offers a well-balanced haircut style with movement and some versatility of styling choices. If you want something light that frames the face and can present as very flattering, ask your Stylist about a butterfly haircut at your next appointment.

If you are feeling lost in what could work best for you, leave it to us. Our consultations work through any question you might have, logistics and we too make recommendations based upon your lifestyle and hair type.
