Hair Colour Remover in Abingdon

Clients often make enquiries with us having coloured their hair either at home or in-salon and their hair has become too dark, too damaged or the wrong colour has been applied. So whether you’ve got a colour that you no longer like, it’s much too dark and you miss your lighter colour, you might be wondering if you can simply remove the colour. If you are happy to remove your colour for any reason, it’s important to understand your options, whether it’s safe to remove hair colour and what best practice looks like.

In our daily blog our Stylists discuss whether you should try to remove hair colour at home, when you should use a salon to help you remove colour build up, whether it’s safe to remove hair colour and everything in-between!

If you are considering something different, our colour corrections service page can help. Finally, if you’re new to the salon and not sure how to get the most value from your next appointment, need a consultation or would value a conversation before booking, call or send a WhatsApp message on 01235 534705.

Hair Colour Remover FAQ's

How can you remove hair colour?

Before addressing the question ‘how can you remove hair colour?’ it’s important to understand what you or your Stylist are working with. Different types or colours or colour histories may require different approaches. For example, very dark permanent hair colour box colours repeated over time may require a different approach from a henna application which in-turn may require a different approach from a semi-permanent creative colour. The process of removing hair colour can range from one which is straight-forward to one which can prove tactful and yet more considered approach.

Away from the salon, it is possible to purchase ‘hair colour removers’. There can be purchased from supermarkets and they are designed to ‘shrink’ artificial colour molecules in the hair. These are designed for clients that have gone too dark however these can be incredibly strong and when they go ‘wrong’ they can cause issues both relating to health of hair and when applying your new colour post colour removal.

The most popular form of colour removal is bleaching in-salon. If you are interested to learn how bleach lightens hair, here’s how. Whilst this isn’t suitable for every client, most salons will refer to this process as a ‘bleach bath’ which sounds scarier than it perhaps ought to be! The process commits to a slow and gentle removal of historical colour build up (particularly when colour applications are both stubborn and multiple colour applications have been applied over time). The benefit of this process being that is allows your Stylist to tailor both the strength of product, time used to remove colour build up and monitor the progress of the colour removal. This considered approach must be undertaken by a trained professional in a controlled setting. Bleach in the wrong hands can cause you issues if doing it without professional supervision. This process is highly effective when removing colour build up and secondly this allows your Stylist to opt for a lighter shade once the bleach bath has been completed.

The final option is the removal of creative colours (think blues, greens, yellows etc). These colours (dependent upon their profile) can often be removed safely using a specific colour remover formulated for semi-permanent shades. Whilst usually undertaken in-salon, these are typically gentler than shop-bought permanent hair colour removers.

What are the options to remove hair colour?

There are several approaches depending on your starting point and goal. Your ‘starting point’ refers to what your hair looks like and this can vary. Removing hair colour isn’t the same process from one person to the next and what your hair looks like, feels like and what your present hair colour looks like matter. Different approaches achieve different results ranging from professional hair colour removal services to those which can be done at home with more independence.

In some cases specific ‘colour remover’ services won’t prove necessarily, particularly if your colour has simply become dull or uneven. For assurance or advice on more intensive ‘colour removal’ services, consult with your Stylist. Additionally if you are concerned about the condition of your hair and you aren’t quite ready for a hair colour removal, we offer an intensive treatment called a Four Step Treatment. This treatment is incredibly effective if your hair needs an initial boost before undergoing any treatment. Secondly, post colour removal this can be used to reinvigorate the hair if it’s undergone a process whereby the hair requires rehydration.

Is it safe to remove hair colour?

In general, hair colour removal can be safe when performed correctly and when the right method is chosen for the individual. In a controlled environment under the guidance and supervision of a trained Stylist, removing colour is a safe and industry recognised service which is undertaken commonly in salons. However when any product including bleach or colour removers, when in the wrong hands or used inappropriately, this is when hair can be damaged and problems will begin to arise. For best results, always ask your Stylist.

Whilst there are options which can be purchased from pharmacies, supermarkets or similar, these aren’t tailored nor consider what your hair needs nor can withstand. For this reason it’s worth treading cautiously if you intend to use one. These can be incredibly strong as they need to prove effective with every hair type and any and every hair history. These products don’t discriminate.

Overall, it’s safest to remove hair colour under the guidance of a qualified hair professional. If you intend to explore a professional salon to help with the next stage of your hair journey, you will require a hair consultation (here’s everything you’ll need to know!). They’ll ensure the right products are used, the hair is monitored throughout the process, and the results are predictable and even. Furthermore, if you are unsure how or what to ask for at the salon, here’s our advice!

Can I remove hair colour at home?

You can, however in our experience it is best to seek out the advice of a qualified hair professional before taking the plunge. To remove a hair colour require years of experience (in-fact many hairdressers won’t be comfortable doing this) so taking the initiative to attempt this away from a salon environment isn’t advisable.

That being said whilst it is doable, the success rate is typically quite low. Speaking from personal experience, at least one client every week enquires about a colour correct specifically relating to an unsuccessful attempt to remove colour at home. In our experience they scarcely work however the attraction for many is the cost-efficiency of attempting such a colour away from a professional environment. In summary, while there are home kits on the market that claim to remove hair dye, these come with significant risks. The most common issues with at-home colour removal include uneven results, dryness, breakage, or unwanted tones left behind. Additionally, without a proper understanding of how hair colour works and how to neutralise unwanted tones, it’s easy to end up in a worse position than where you started.

Conclusion

Removing hair colour isn’t a one-size-fits-all process. For best results, confer with your Stylist who has an understanding of both your hair and what it is that you need. Stylists have a thorough understanding of the science of hair, what can work with different hair histories and they will understand when products should be used and critically when best to avoid.

If you are feeling lost in what could work best for you, leave it to us. Our consultations work through any question you might have, logistics and we too make recommendations based upon your lifestyle and hair type.
