Low Maintenance Short Haircuts in Abingdon
Low maintenance short haircuts come in different forms and with differing benefits dependent upon your hair thickness, ideal length and style. From favourable daily routines to less frequent in-salon appointments, many clients want to combine the practicality and style of a shorter cut alongside something that requires lower. For every client that doesn’t mind appointments every six weeks with limited day-to-day styling, is a person that is happy with routine styling with fewer appointments. That’s where low maintenance short haircuts come in. In our daily blog our Stylists explore the best low maintenance haircuts, what low maintenance cuts, what you can expect and what low maintenance really means.

Easy to maintain short haircuts FAQ's
What are the best low maintenance haircuts for short hair?
The Lob: Low maintenance haircuts doesn’t automatically mean uninspiring nor lacking in style. Actually most short haircuts can be tailored to suit your needs and whilst there are some exceptions, many short haircuts can be worked to your style. As a rule of thumb, one of the easiest means to manage maintenance is a lob without any layers (essentially a one-length haircut). These sorts of appointments can work with straight or fine hair, however for volume whilst this can increase the maintenance, it can present the illusion of thicker hair so there is a trade off.
Curly Hair/Soft Layers: For clients with curly hair, soft layers look great, they’re easy to maintain and they look beautiful! What’s not to love? Many people with curly hair have quite a structured/triangular look and well cut layers (a curly specific haircut) with layers can really support your curls and help them to sit more naturally.
Shag: The shag haircut is an underutilised haircut but an all-time classic. Think heavy layers with differing lengths and lots of movement. This cut is full of character, doesn’t require lots of styling/blow drying and the messy look means that you can wear it in more than one way.
Italian Bob: The Italian Bob isn’t a well known term and given its lesser known reference, the Italian Bob is jaw-length with a strong shape and sometimes subtle layering. This haircut would typically appeal if you want something simple yet elegant.
Boyfriend Bob: The Boyfriend Bob is marmite. You will either love this or hate it. This cut sits slightly longer and has a lived-in and relaxed vibe. It typically appeals to those that don’t want a huge fuss every morning.
Hush Cut: The Hush Cut is another that isn’t well known (Google it for inspiration!). This cut features soft, subtle layers around the face. The best bit is that it takes little to no effort to maintain.
What makes a haircut low maintenance?
A haircut becomes low maintenance when it’s designed to work with your natural hair texture, lifestyle, your day-to-day styling needs and doesn’t rely on daily styling to look good. When booking a haircut, consider researching styles which you like in anticipation of your appointment. During your appointment it is likely that your Stylist will explore options with you and how to ask for a haircut is important (particularly one which is low maintenance).
Short low maintenance haircuts should hold their shape as they grow out over the following weeks nor should they require lots of upkeep. Whilst many shorter haircuts can be low-maintenance day-to-day, many do need appointments every few weeks and this is important. On the flip-side a good low maintenance cut will be more aligned to there being less emphasis on styling and shaping your hair with products, brushes and drying. In summary, the less you have to do to each the to make your hair look good, the more low maintenance the haircut it is. Whilst many clients may view frequent appointments as being higher maintenance, your motivation matters as this will influence your haircut of choice.
How often should I get my hair cut?
Your type of haircut will greatly influence the timeframe between appointments and there isn’t a one-size-fits-all answer to this. On average, clients come in every six to eight weeks for a cut with shorter styles like pixies which can be easy to manage day-to-day yet requiring more regular cuts whereas one-length lobs on fine hair can appeal given the frequency of appointment is closer to 8 to 12 weeks. Styles like shag haircuts are designed with a messier look and 10+ weeks is most common however the timeframe can too be attributed to average hair growth, hair type and your haircut of choice.
How much styling should go into a low maintenance haircut?
By definition, very little. However it’s worth determining your understanding of ‘low maintenance’. Low maintenance could relate to fewer appointments, less maintenance when compared with other haircuts (or both). The beauty of lower maintenance shorter haircuts is that with the support of your Stylist during your consultation, this can greatly support both your chosen style and match with your ideal maintenance free cut.
We can also show your ‘how to’ style at home, which products and styling options can reduce time. For example many low maintenance haircuts are meant to be air-dried, finger-styled, or simply enhanced with minimal product use. For curly haircuts (we use Only Curls in salon) and products such as curl gels, curl cremes or similar can be applied to slightly damp hair and the styling is so minimal any beginner can get a feel for what will and won’t work early. Here’s three things you need for curly hair.
Conclusion
Low maintenance short haircuts are a perfect if your motivation is to simplify your hair routine either at home, relating to salon visits or a combination of the two. Whether you’re looking for a lob, a softly layered haircut or a textured and messy shag, there’s a number of options that can suit your needs that don’t necessarily need to sacrifice on looking good in pursuit of something easier to manage!
