Choppy Ends in Abingdon

‘Choppy ends’ is a hairdressing term that you may have seen or heard either in salon, online or in discussion about a type of haircut. But what are choppy ends? Choppy ends offer texture, movement and shape to a haircut, however they aren’t for everyone neither are they appropriate for every hair type. Choppy ends offer a ‘choppier’ finish that feels light, the ends allow for a bit more flexibility.

In our daily blog our Stylists answer your FAQ’s surrounding choppy ends including what they are, what they look like, what you should ask for and how maintainable choppy ends can be!

If you are considering something different, our ladies haircutting service page can help. Finally, if you’re new to the salon and not sure how to get the most value from your next appointment, need a consultation or would value a conversation before booking, call or send a WhatsApp message on 01235 534705.

Choppy Ends FAQ's

What are choppy ends?

Choppy ends are a common hairdressing term which references a hairdressing technique where the hair is cut using texturing methods rather than your Stylist cutting your hair bluntly or in a straight line. When hair is cut to apply choppy ends, the result is a more natural finish (this is sometimes called feathered) and the benefits of a choppy finish allow for more freedom and the illusion of lighter ends. The technique used to create choppy ends does so by removing weight and breaking up the density of the ends of hair making it highly appealing to anyone looking for a more relaxed yet casual (or even edgy) style.

When people think of ‘choppy’ this is generally associated with layers however this isn’t always the case. For example you can have choppy ends without heavy layering throughout the rest of the hair, and vice versa. Choppy ends largely focus the attentions exclusively on the ends of your hair rather than the whole head of hair. If you are considering choppy ends, they can work well with a range of hair lengths so don’t be put off by assuming they work only with longer styles.

Finally, choppy ends can be applied and tweaked depending on your desired look. For example if you want to soften your look, some lightly textured choppy ends can be favourable whereas for an edgier look, your Stylist can tailored their technique do achieve a different look.

What do choppy ends look like?

How choppy ends can look will be determined by what your Stylist sets out to achieve. For example choppy ends can look soft, airy and textured or even voluminous and edgy! The easiest comparator is to visual aa solid one length blunt haircut and think of the opposite! Choppy ends add a point of interest to the hair whilst applying volume and a more natural look for an overly effortless style which can in some cases reduce the need to work with your hair less day-to-day.

Choppy ends generally perform different functions for different cuts. For example on a bob, pixie (or even a bixie) they offer a playful and edgy twist and stop your haircuts looking to blocky whilst aiding your ability to style and work with your hair. One thing which is under-appreciated is the  relationship between choppy ends and colour. For example highlights alongside choppy long bob can really elevate your cut from something ‘nice’ to something incredibly eye-catching. One reason for this is the choppy ends will showcase the dimension from your colour work by catching the light and revealing different colours through the increase in movement.

Are choppy ends easy to maintain?

Choppy layers should help with the ease of styling because the finish is intentionally natural in its appearance. One length blunt haircuts will lose their shape more quickly whereas the softer and choppier ends grow out more organically without losing its shape so visibly. Having said that, all haircuts will need some type of upkeep in a salon and choppy ends are no different. As a rule of thumb, shorter styles will require more frequency haircuts and longer styles can stretch (worst case scenario) up to three months and shorter styles closer to two months.

Your day-to-day styling of choppy ends is fairly straightforward and the cut itself will greatly support your intended styling. Products such  as sea salt sprays, mousses or  texture creams can prove useful and these can be applied to enhance definition. Choppy ends can be air-dryed, styled with a diffuser (for curls) or a round brush and hair dryer.

How should I ask for a choppy ends?

If you are looking for choppy ends, try to be as clear as you possible can about the sort of look, overall shape and the effect you are looking for. Good Stylists will try to extract information from you which  will help to support what sort of style and the type of choppy ends that could work for you. Images can also prove useful too, particularly if you are having difficulty articulating what it is that you like (or indeed dislike) about a certain style of haircut. Images will also help your Stylist to understand what you value and what you hope to gain by introducing choppy ends to ensure that  they are able to adjust their technique accordingly.

If you consider yourself unfamiliar with hairdressing techniques, verbatim or what a certain technique  might look, trust your Stylist to guide you and be prepared to ask questions. Your Stylist is in the field of fashion and many Stylists invest their time away from salon to understand the latest trends so they will in all likelihood appreciate your face shape, hair type and the time you intend to spend on your hair to deliver the best cut for you. If you’re still unsure how to ask for a haircut, here are some helpful tips.

Conclusion

Choppy ends have their place and are a simple but effective way to transform a haircut, offering lightness, texture and volume. The choppy ends you seek aren’t always the same with your length  of cut, personal style and willing investment in day-to-day maintenance should matter so consult with your Stylist to find the perfect choppy ends for you.
