Going Grey in Abingdon
Going grey has never been more popular. For some it’s a trend, for other clients they are ready to embrace their natural colour more than ever. Clients across Oxfordshire and beyond are embracing their natural silver tones or choosing to dye their hair grey for an edgy and modern look.
Whether you’re naturally grey and ready to ditch your old colour or you’re looking to adopt grey as your new hair colour, finding the right tone and application depends on your motivations, ideal look and ideal ongoing maintenance. In this blog, we’ll explore how to transition to grey hair in two forms; for those who are naturally grey but have been colouring their hair (and want to get away from it) and secondly client that aren’t grey but want to achieve a beautiful silvery/grey colour. With the help of our Stylists we’ll also walk through the options that can help you achieve stunning grey hair!
If you’re looking for a highlighting option to help then our highlights service page could help you.
Achieving a Grey Hair Colour FAQ's
Your Starting Point Matters
Where you start from makes the biggest difference. Achieving a grey/silver shade is very doable, however the starting point and the starting colour will influence what can be done and how.
As a general rule, the best results are achieved once hair has been sufficiently lightened, so the lighter (and healthier the hair), the greater the end result. For example if your hair is already quite light and virgin (no colour of bleach) the work required and likelihood of achieving your desired shade is highly likely.
Conversely, the darker, drier (more porous or damaged the hair) and if the hair history consists of lots of different colours overlapping one another darker colours from over the years, this only increases the resistance whilst placing some limitations upon what is possible and/or how many appointments that it could take.
How would I achieve silver or grey?
Colours are usually available and grouped together in ‘families’. Our salon used JOICO which includes many families including ‘Blonde Life’. A fairly new range of colours includes ‘Quick Toners’ which are available in shades which enable clients to achieve grey. So in most cases we are able to utilise Blonde Life Quick Toner, Silver. This offers a really versatile and effective grey colour once the hair has been lightened.
The crucial stage is being able to sufficiently lighten the hair to a shade which is as light as possible (think a clean white or a very light yellow). In the world of hairdressing this is known as a ‘level 10’. Once lifted to a clean shade, grey becomes a much more achievable and effective colour.
How Would It Look if I Did Highlights?
If your natural hair colour is mostly grey and it’s a colour that you want to embrace moving forward, the most popular way of delivering a grey colour is through highlights and lowlights. This is because most people gradually become greyer over time with some darker colour found that breaks up the grey. With highlights and lowlights we have more control over the percentage of both colours which allow us as Stylists to play with both colours much more freely.
This technique allows for a slightly darker colour to be applied as a lowlight (think highlight but darker) alongside the highlight (lighter pieces). It’s these lighter pieces which will eventually turn grey.
If I Don't Do Highlights, What Other Options Do I Have?
This question will depend on your motivation. If you don’t want to cover grey, but rather just want something different there are plenty of options. The second consideration would be how often do you plan to colour your hair.
If you want something irregular, balayage is a nice and simple option. The upkeep is straightforward too (2-4 times annually). The second option if you don’t mind upkeep is a scalp bleach (one colour all over). The process for this is a full head bleach lightening every strand of hair before toning (colouring) the lightened hair to your desired shade of grey leaving one colour remaining all over. The third option is silver/grey as a creative colour. This could look like small pieces scattered across the hair, half-and-half (one colour either side), the money piece (think two pieces of hair either side of the face) or an underneath colour which can be seen when styled or hair put up.
Conclusion
If you want to embrace your natural colour, highlights and lowlights with a Blonde Life Quick Toner in Silver is the perfection option and an easy decision. They look amazing once applied and are incredible effective.
If you’re looking for something that is lower maintenance without the need to cover any grey hair then a balayage could work whereas if maintenance isn’t so much of an issue, there are plenty of other options including scalp bleaches, creative colouring and more.
