Scalp Bleach FAQ's
What is a scalp bleach?
A scalp bleach is the application of bleach on every strand of hair leaving no natural hair colour. To achieve this, a scalp bleach involves applying bleach directly to the hair from root to ends, lightening all of the hair on your head. Bleach removes pigment (colour) resulting in a lighter shade. Bleach is powerful and can lighten hair, however for the best (lightest) result, existing hair texture, hair colour, resistance, hair condition and more make a big different to the end result. It’s also important to recognise that colour can’t lift colour, so if you are looking for impactful results, bleach is your friend. Our blog post about lightening without bleach might explain in further detail.
The difference between highlighting and scalp bleaching being that highlights lighten sections of the hair leaving natural hair alongside the bleached highlights which create a multi-tonal effect. The key difference between both is that a scalp bleach targets the entire hair making it much more noticeable.
For men, scalp bleaching is often associated with a bold, daring look. For women, scalp bleaching can be equally bold, but it’s also a versatile look that can be styled in various ways, from sleek and polished to more textured and tousled. If you want to learn about going really bright, our blog about how to go really light might help.
What is a toner and do I need one?
The short answer is that it is difficult to answer without more questions. This can vary from client to client.
The longer answer is in most cases, most clients do. The way to think about toners is that they work well with bleach. Effectively toners do what bleach can’t and vice versa. Bleach lightens, but it doesn’t colour, whereas toners can’t lighten but they allow clients to be more selective. If you are looking for something specific like white blonde hair, this might help. However in some cases whilst a whiter colour is achievable with bleach, in most cases it requires both a bleach and toner combination.
In most cases bleach leaves hair inconsistent. For example, bleach applied to short hair will leave it lighter and darker in different areas (it tends to process at different rates across the head). For this reason, a toner both neutralises, counters certain shades and allows your Stylist to be more selective over colour choice. The toner ‘grabs’ onto the bleach and can be anything from gold blonde, platinum blonde, icey blonde, ash, red, copper, natural or anything in between!
What is the process for scalp bleaching?
Scalp bleaching is a highly bespoke service and the outcome, delivery and method can vary from one client to the next. Broadly speaking here’s what to expect during the scalp bleaching process:
Consultation: The consultation factors in what you’re hoping for, your hair history, whether a scalp bleach is right for you, any questions you might have and how long it will take.
Application: Bleach is carefully applied to your entire head of hair and allowed to process. The processing time will depend on your starting point/hair colour against your desired end colour. Lighter hair typically processes faster, while darker hair may require more time.
Toning: After the bleaching process is completed, your hair is washed, towel dried and a toner is applied to neutralise any unwanted brassy or yellow tones (this is typical with bleach). The toner enables your Stylist to select your desired shade more effectively.
What are the pros of scalp bleaching?
Scalp bleaching offers several benefits and is a popular choice if you are looking for a hair transformation. Here are some of the key advantages:
- Eye Catching: Scalp bleaches are bold, eye-catching and noticeable. So whether you want to make a statement or just love the idea of being much brighter, a scalp bleach can take you from your existing hair to much brighter in the shortest time possible.
- Lightness: For those wanting to go lighter (especially much lighter!), scalp bleaching is the most effective method.
What are the cons of scalp bleaching?
Scalp bleaching offers many benefits, however it’s really important that clients are aware of the cons before making the commitment:
- Maintenance: If you are happy with the commitment of maintaining hair colour, it’s not so much of an obstacle. However if you’re not prepared for the maintenance, it may come as a surprise when your hair begins to grow! This means you’ll need frequent touch-ups, typically every 6 weeks, to maintain the look. This is also an argument for treatment your hair post scalp bleach. In-salon we have an amazing four step treatment which is designed specifically for bleached hair.
- Fade: The fade is far less of a worry and mostly common if you aren’t prepared to look after your hair. Toners will generally fade/dull over time if left without any upkeep. Whilst topping up the regrowth/roots is a necessity every few months, in theory the toner would eventually fade after six months or so however in most cases clients will have taken action much sooner.
Is a scalp bleach right for you?
Scalp bleaching can look great, however it isn’t for everyone. Here are some considerations:
- Your Lifestyle: Does your lifestyle allow you to commit to regular hair appointments? Whilst the commitment is reasonable, the length of appointments are reasonably short once on top of it. If you’re too busy to make your next appointment, getting on top of the regrowth may not be ideal.
- Commitment to Aftercare: Regular appointments, appropriate shampoo/conditioners don’t need to be expensive, however it can make a huge difference. If you’re unsure, speak to your Stylist for any recommendations.
Conclusion - What's the best option for you?
If you want to be lighter, need a big change and you’re happy with the upkeep, it’s an obvious ‘yes’. The positives are obvious; it makes for a bold and transformative look for both men and women looking to make a statement with their hair. The biggest consideration is whether you’re ready for the maintenance that comes from the commitment to maintaining your new hair.
