How long are balayage appointments in Abingdon
Balayage is one of the most popular colour services and is famed for its soft, blended finish and easy-to-maintain appeal. Many clients often ask how long are balayage appointments? Are they the same length for everyone? If you are booking are all balayages the same? And everything in-between. For first-time clients you might be surprised to hear that it’s not so much of a straight-forward answer as you might think.
In our daily blog we ask our Stylists the different factors than influence the duration of a balayage appointment, how long you could be in the chair for and the average timings for each typical stage of a balayage service.
If you are considering something different, our balayage service page can help. Finally, if you’re new to the salon and not sure how to get the most value from your next appointment, need a consultation or would value a conversation before booking, call or send a WhatsApp message on 01235 534705

Balayage Appointment Times FAQ's
How long does a balayage take?
On average a typical balayage appointment (we’ll define this later) can take anywhere between three to four hours. The considerations for your Stylist will typically represent what you hope to achieve, the thickness of your hair, length of your hair, your hairs resistance, the processing time required, the number of lighter pieces that you need and the type of blend desired.
A typical balayage is your ‘balayage top up’ meaning your ‘next’ balayage appointment following the last appointment. Balayaging on virgin hair or already balayaged hair is quicker than other types of balayages. Other types of balayages include (but are not limited to) balayage transformations, AirTouch balayage or balayages with roots. The appointments are highly bespoke and they can often range from 3.5 hours to 6 hours, on occasion more. To contextualise the variety of balayages seen in salon against desired look and what a Stylist could be working with, as of writing this week the salon has seen nine balayages this week. The shortest was 2 hours and 45 minutes. The longest this week was 4.5 hours, they not only can balayages and their projected timings change, but so can the cost.
In summary balayage is not a one-size-fits-all service. When your Stylist see’s you, they will consider all factors when estimating both time and cost. If your hair is long or thick, expect to be in the salon for closer to the four-hour plus mark. On the other hand, shorter or finer hair may fall closer to the three hour mark.
In most cases there are three components to balayages. These components are as follows: the balayage itself, your toner and your neutraliser. Theses are outlined below with anticipated timings:
- Balayage Application: The is the most time consuming aspect of the balayage the time commitment that requires the most investment. This can range from anything between one hour and two hours on average.
- Processing Time: This is the time that your Stylist allows for your balayage to achieve its desired level of lightness. The maximum time is one hour however this can average between 30 minutes (albeit rarely) and one hour.
- Toning: Toners neutralise and allow your colour to be more bespoke. It’s very common to have a toner with balayage and most of the time this is inavoidable. On average this can take for most hair roughly 30 minutes but for thicker hair or more challenges colours up to one hour (including application, washing, conditioning and detangling).
- Haircut/Blowdry: Depending upon thickness, anything between 45 minutes and one hour and 15 minutes.
Does a balayage take longer on dark hair?
In most cases, yes a balayage can take longer to achieve on darker hair. This is for a couple of reasons; firstly the skill needed to lighten darker hair is much more refined and it can prove time consuming both to apply and monitor as the balayage processes. The second reason is that different sections of the hair may need washing much more intricately meaning that certain sections of foils are much more likely to require removal before others and this can greatly extend the length of your balayage appointment. There is also the consideration as to whether your dark hair is naturally dark or dark due to the application of a darker hair colour. Lifting dark pigment takes more time and care and assuming it has already been coloured, this can drastically effect the end result.
For darker hair colours, whilst your Stylist will usually advise this in advance of any booking, certain colours will require multiple sessions to reach your desired lightness without compromising the health of your hair. Finally it’s too worth noting that dark hair (particularly Asian hair) can be more resistant to lightening and therefore this can take more time especially if you are looking to go as blonde as possible.
How long does it take to do a balayage on fine hair?
There are a number of factors that influence the time it takes for your Stylist to do a balayage. One of the key factors is fine hair. Fine hair usually means less work (although some clients have a lot of fine hair) so if you have a lot of hair that is fine, it’s not an exact science to say that it will incidentally take less time. That being said there are some benefits; fine hair typically lightens more quickly given the hair is less dense and for each section your Stylist will be able to ‘paint’ your balayage more speedily.
Overall if your hair is both fine and short, it’s likely that your balayage appointment will be on the shorter side, however these are too other factors which will dictate your appointment legnth.
How long is the processing time for a balayage?
Processing times for balayage appointments can vary. The contributing factors are largely dependent upon your starting point (the condition, look, history and feel of your hair) and secondly what you want your hair to look like. Assuming that a formula of bleach is being used, on average once applied the bleach will be allowed to develop for anywhere from 30 to 60 minutes. Once processing has complete and your bleach washed, usually a toner will be applied and the processing time for these can be anywhere from 5 to 30 minutes.
Conclusion
While balayage is unquestionably the most low-maintenance hair colour option available to you, it can dependent upon hair thickness, texture, history, starting colour and for a lighter end result take more time. On average, you should set aside three to four hours for the process, though some factors may benefit from a longer or shorter session.
