toners in Abingdon
If you don’t know what a toner is or whether you need to add a toner to your next hair colour appointment, you won’t be alone. Most clients won’t know what a toner is and what purpose it serves and yet most of us have at the very least heard the term ‘toner’ banded around in a salon environment without much, if any context. Yet if you are booking a service which involves bleach then this could be something that you need. Toners play an essential role in achieving the perfect hair colour, particularly for blonde, balayage, or highlighted hair, but do you always need to book one?
In our daily blog, we’ll explain what a toner is, whether you need one alongside your next appointment, how to know if you might need one and whether your Stylist will tell you!
If you are considering something different, visit our balayage service page or our highlights service page. Finally, if you’re new to the salon and not sure how to get the most value from your next appointment, need a consultation or would value a conversation before booking, call or send a WhatsApp message on 01235 534705

Booking a Toner FAQ's
What is a toner?
A toner is a form of hair colour that ‘grabs’ onto already bleached hair. The way to think about toners is it allows your Stylist to select your desired colour option, redefining what your hair looks like in just a few short minutes. Toners also help to neutralise unwanted brassiness, unbalanced colours whilst supporting your desired tone of hair.
Toners can only be used post bleach (highlights, balayage, ombre or scalp bleaching) ensuring that your hair is one consistent lightened tone. Bleach itself isn’t a hair colour however whilst on occasion using bleach is ‘fine’, in many common instances, a toner is a necessity alongside bleach to offer better colour balance, neutralise unwanted colours and supporting your overall new look. At times toners will prove essential and there is no other workaround.
If you’re new to hair colour and this is your first time, read this blog.
Do I book a toner separately?
If you need a toner alongside your colour service, most salons require you to book this as a separate service selection. If you are unsure be certain to speak with your Stylist prior to booking and they will be able to guide you. For clients that are new to our salon (or any salon for the first time), typically a Stylist will best guide you in any advance consultation and ensuring that this is booked in the diary is really important. Toners can add upwards of 20 minutes or more onto a colour service so your Stylist will likely be eager to ensure your service runs as smoothly as possible.
How do I know whether to book a toner?
Your Stylist should have a deeper understanding of the colour process so it’s typically best to leave the decision to them. However there are some more obvious scenarios where you will most likely require a toner. Whilst this isn’t an exhaustive list, these are some examples where toners might be required:
- Balayage: 99% of balayages require a toner. Where most balayages are one lightened colour, for better colour balance and to reduce the possibility of undesired tones, a toner is strongly recommended.
- Brassiness: If your hair naturally pulls warm tones (yellow, orange, or red), a toner will help neutralise these and create a more balanced colour. This is very common if your hair is box dyed, is very dark or has lots of applications of hair colour. Here’s why your hair might turn orange.
- Specific shade: If you have something specific in mind such as an icy, ashy or cool blonde, a toner can be highly effective at creating this toner for you. If your intention is a much lighter result, here’s how you can achieve much lighter hair.
- Dull: Toners can add vibrancy and dimension to previously coloured hair, making it look fresher and shinier.
- Stylist recommendation: If your stylist suggests a toner, it’s because they know it will help you achieve the best result.
If you’re still unsure, the best approach is to ask your stylist when booking your appointment. They’ll be able to advise whether a toner is necessary based on your hair goals and the service you’re having.
Can I avoid using a toner?
It’s possible and it depends typically on your starting point (what does your hair look like and what’s its history) against what you hope to achieve. In some cases, it may be possible to skip a toner and in some cases it may not be essential. Another way to look at this is to analyse what your hair may look like without a toner:
- Possible brassiness or unwanted warm tones which aren’t compatible with your natural hair colour.
- Unbalanced overall colour
- Less refined end result
If you want to avoid toners entirely but still achieve a cool or neutral blonde, you’ll likely need to maintain your hair with at-home toning products, such as purple shampoo, to counteract brassiness over time. However, these products don’t replace the precision of an in-salon toner nor are they likely to achieve a specific colour that you may desire.
Sometimes highlights can avoid using a toner altogether. Here’s how much highlights can lighten your hair.
Conclusion
If you are concerned as to whether you need a toner, leave it to your Stylist to make that decision. Some Stylists can work to your brief without the use of a toner and in other cases they will absolutely need one; bleach as a standalone product just may not meet your needs. In most cases, especially for blonde hair or balayage, a toner is an essential component to achieving the perfect hair colour. If in doubt, reach out and speak to your Stylist.
If you are feeling lost in what could work best for you, leave it to us. Our consultations work through any question you might have, logistics and we too make recommendations based upon your lifestyle and hair type.
