Balayage FAQ's

What is an AirTouch balayage?

AirTouch is a technique that can be applied to either balayage or highlights. When highlighting hair using a more traditional methods, Stylists utilise the following; foils, bleach (or colour), a colour brush and a comb. Tension is placed on the longest section of hair so that bleach/colour can be applied more easily. A comb is then used to ‘push/remove’ hairs closer to the root for an improved finish. Until recently this was the accepted method for application. AirTouch on the other hand utilises heat and pressurised air from a hairdryer to achieve this same thing without backcombing with greater efficiency and accuracy leading to a greater overall result.

What you are left with by the end of your appointment is softer, cleaner and a greatly improved balayage.

Why is AirTouch balayage so popular?

Very simply, it looks AMAZING. If you want your balayage to standout from the rest, AirTouch is absolutely the route to take.

What is the different between AirTouch balayage and a normal balayage?

It’s still a balayage. AirTouch is simply a technique that can be applied when delivering a balayage. If you were to compare one balayage against a second using AirTouch, both applications would strongly reflect the client brief. The colour would be identical, the number of lighter pieces the same and the ability to style the hair also similar. What separates one ‘normal’ balayage from a second that has utilised AirTouch being the balayage that benefitted from using AirTouch will be noticeably softer and over time the regrowth will appear much softer.

It doesn’t make the first balayage that hasn’t benefitted from AirTouch ‘bad’, far from it. Most clients still opt for a ‘normal’ balayage. However if you are looking to elevate your colour to the next level, with budgets in mind it is worth consideration.

What does AirTouch balayage do to your hair?

A balayage will lighten your hair for a sun-kissed look from the top of your eyebrow/bottom of your ear for a nice blend. Your stylist is trying to replicate what the sun does toy our hair when you visit somewhere hot. Where the sun lightens your hair, it won’t lighten exclusively from one area. Rather, the ends of your hair can pick up lighten pieces from the ends to closer to your roots so not every piece will lighten exclusively from the same starting point.

AirTouch is a technique to soften, add dimension and improve the blend further than a ‘normal’ balayage otherwise would.

What does
AirTouch balayage cost?

The key factor is the starting point. Balayages can really vary, however the average cost in 2024 for an AirTouch balayage (assuming the starting point is virgin hair, average length and average thickness) including a haircut is £250 compared to £190 for a ‘normal’ balayage and haircut. This is usually due to the additional time required. Where the application for a more traditional balayage application can take one hour, AirTouch can add on average an additional 30 minutes – one hour on top of a typical appointment.

The average cost in central Oxfordshire exceeds £300-£400 for the same service.
