Asian Haircuts in Abingdon
Finding the right stylist for your hair type can be a challenge, and for men and women with Asian hair in Oxfordshire, it may feel even more difficult. If you’ve ever struggled to find a stylist who understands how to work with Asian hair, you’re not alone. Many salons not just in Oxfordshire largely don’t specialise neither do they hold the requisite skill set to cater to different hair types. Fundamentally the structural differences between Asian and Caucasian hair can make all the difference when it comes to your Stylist cutting your hair.
In our daily blog, our Stylists explore why not all hairdressers are experienced in cutting Asian hair, what the pitfalls are from not using someone experienced, what the unique qualities of Asian are and how important it is to find a stylist with the right expertise. The good news is that our salon has Stylists with experience working on Asian hair.
If you are looking for a new haircut and need styling and maintenance advice for your hair, visit our ladies haircuts or mens haircuts service pages.
Finally, if you’re new to the salon and not sure how to get the most value from your next hair appointment, call or send a WhatsApp message on 01235 534705.
Asian Haircuts FAQ's
What is the structure of Asian hair?
Whilst not all hair is the same and can vary (for example Caucasian hair can be straight, curly, thick, fin, dry, (whether they are thicker, finer, drier etc), most Stylists will be adept with most types of Caucasian hair with curly hair being the only hair type which is arguably most niche. In much the same way as other ethnicities, cutting and styling most types of Asian hair poses its own challenges. The structure of Asian hair is usually smooth, grows perpendicular and on average at a much faster rate than Caucasian hair. What’s more, Asian hair is typically twice as thick as Caucasian hair, meaning that Stylists can often struggle to get to grips with its density, thickness and volume of hair.
What are the key differences between caucasian hair and Asia hair?
- Thickness/Density: Asian hair is usually thicker and denser than Caucasian hair. Each hair strand has a larger diameter, which makes it smoother, straighter and in the process more challenging for a lot of Stylists to cut.
- Texture: While Asian hair can be straighter, it is also much more resistant meaning it can be lacking in moisture. This means that it reacts differently to traditional cutting techniques, as the hair is less pliable.
- Growth Pattern: Asian hair tends to grow straight out from the scalp, making it more prone to sticking out when cut incorrectly, particularly when it is short or layered. Caucasian hair is typically more versatile insofar as it grows and lays flatter thus falling differently from Asian hair.
Why can't all hairdressers cut Asian hair?
The simple answer is exposure. In the UK, most hair salons, colleges and hairdressing apprenticeships focus predominantly upon straight or wavy Caucasian hair with curly hair, afro hair and Asian hair forming more niche skills which select Stylists will adopt once they have mastered the bread and butter of cutting Caucasian hair. This is largely for two reasons; in Oxfordshire whilst diverse, like a lot of UK counties, a lot of towns lack much if any diversity. Certain towns are far more diverse, however Abingdon is not and therefore the focus is both upon the availability of willing clients which are predominantly Caucasian and the vast client base that is represented. Hair types vary across ethnicities, and while hairdressers are trained to cut and style all types of hair, most receive their practical training on Caucasian hair. Caucasian hair is generally finer and has a wider variety of textures and densities, making it more flexible in terms of styling. In contrast, Asian hair typically has its own unique qualities that require a different approach when it comes to cutting and styling.
Uniquely salons like ourselves attract clients from across Oxfordshire and further afield (which more broadly is a much more diverse area), however generally a lot of towns and cities across the UK won’t specialise.
We too find similar trends with curly hair. Given the typical salon won’t see a curly haired client for months (in most cases years), the exposure, experience and know-how to recommend cuts, techniques, styling for curly hair clients is usually less than adequate. Consequently, those salons too won’t stock appropriate product ranges and thus whilst many hairdressers are highly skilled in cutting Caucasian hair many lack practical experience in cutting other hair types, such as curly hair, Asian or Afro hair.
Asian hair also requires specific techniques that differ from the standard approaches taught in many salons on Caucasian hair. Without having honed your craft regularly, many Stylists simply won’t fully understand how the hair behaves or reacts to cutting or styling.
What are common challenges with cutting Asian hair?
Asian hair can present some challenges to stylists who don’t have the experience. These are some more common pitfalls:
Layering Issues: The biggest issue of any is layers. Caucasian and Asian hair behave differently from day one. Asian hair is typically much more dense and grows straight, so if not cut correctly, layers can end up looking chunky, uneven or very choppy. If cutting say, fine Caucasian hair on thicker hair, it can cause bigger problems.
Unevenness: Clean lines are important with Asian hair because they show up much more. Given hair is generally straighter, Caucasian hair which often has more of a natural wave, any unevenness will prove much more noticeable.
Volume: Asian hair can be more voluminous than it appears at first glance. There are techniques your Stylist can employ to reduce this without creating issues down the line which are sensitive to your overall haircut.
Can we cut Asian hair?
The short answer is, yes. Our salon experience is fairly well diversified with Stylists from all backgrounds, countries including England, South Africa, South American and Eastern Europe! That experience of working for salons overseas, Oxfordshire, London and more locally has provided increased exposure including to that of clients from China, Hong Kong, South Korea, Indonesia, Japan, India and more.
A couple of our Stylists have worked extensively with Asian clients in the past and this is reflected in our work. That being said the experience comes from outside of Oxfordshire and thus we consider ourselves to have benefitted from a far more diverse range of experiences and clientele that travel from further afield to visit us given our niche.
When looking for a Stylist, don’t hesitate to ask them about their experience with Asian hair. If anything we’d encourage you to call us or send us a WhatsApp message on 01235 534705 in advance if you’re unsure. If you can establish a rapport with a Stylist, they will become a strong allay. A stylist with the right knowledge will be able to advise you on cutting, styling, how to wear your hair, fashion and what approach they would recommend that you take.
Conclusion
Not every Stylist will be able to assist with every hair type. If you’re looking for a haircut (or hair colour!), Asian hair is no different. If you’ve struggled to find a stylist who understands your hair, help is available! Our salon has Stylists with significant exposure with clients globally including from Asia, particularly from having working in salons across the UK and overseas.
If you’re looking for a haircut and you require a Stylist with experience working with Asian hair types, our Stylists are happy to help. Call or send a WhatsApp message on 01235 534705.
