Perm Appointments in Abingdon
If you have naturally curly hair and it looks frizzy, messy, unruly, inconsistent or you just aren’t able to embrace your curls, you might have considered a different curl pattern in the form of a perm! Curls can loose their shape either due to weight (gravity), the need for a haircut, dryness or similar whereas in other cases you may just desire a tighter curl, looser curl or simply a more defined curl. In this context, the idea of perming curly hair sometimes arises with a view to to refining or enhance curly hair by way of a perm.
In our daily blog our Stylists outline whether you can perm already curly hair, should perm curly hair and more importantly, what do our Stylists say?
If you are considering something different, our curly hair service page can help. Finally, if you’re new to the salon and not sure how to get the most value from your next appointment, need a consultation or would value a conversation before booking, call or send a WhatsApp message on 01235 534705

Perms for Curly Hair FAQ's
Can you perm curly hair?
The short answer is yes, you can perm curly hair and in our experience whilst rare, the motivation for doing so tends to vary from person-to-person and below we outline some examples of these. A perm can be used in big or a small way. Perms are most commonly used for transforming straight or fine hair into curls, however they can be useful for adding defined curls to curls without any structure, hair that is curly in places and flat/straight in others into beautiful and consistent and in other scenarios you love curls but want a change!
For example many people with naturally curly hair find that certain sections of their hair (often the back or the crown) have less definition or a looser curl. A perm can help bring those areas into alignment with the rest of the hair, creating a more cohesive and intentional look. Many enquiries are unique. Certain curls lack structure and no amount of styling, product and haircut can help. Perms can offer a more structured and easy to manage look.
Is a perm the only option?
In many cases a curly hair specialist will seek to understand your motivation before encouraging you to commit to a perm. A curly hair specialist will have knowledge of most curly hair types, styling options, products, fashion and how to make the most of what you already have. With this knowledge your Stylist may be able to show you tips for achieving a better curl through styling, products or even a haircut. Whilst a perm might be the answer, more typically it isn’t and we find that even the most knowledgeable of clients with curly hair are surprised at what can be achieved. For defined curls, here’s how!
Why would you perm curly hair?
One of the benefits to a perm is uniformity. Natural curls don’t always grow evenly or consistently and the frustration that arises from trying to supercharge your natural curls may feel like too much work. In some cases, clients desire a different curl type (bigger/smaller/tighter/looser) and without the introduction of a perm, no amount of styling can achieve any of the above. For this reason is you seek a more balanced look or a specific curl pattern, a perm might be the next best option (assuming that it cannot be achieved without.
In other cases, another reason to consider perming curly hair is to achieve more volume. If your curls have become limp or flat, a perm can give your hair that extra bounce that you think of when you consider the impact of curls. When a perm is married with a curly hair, the possibilities are endless!
Finally, perms are most commonly used on curly hair to adapt the size and tightness of your curls. Whether it’s a beach wave (think looser curl) or a spiral perm (tighter curls), whether the curls are bigger, smaller or a combination, you can be highly selective with your choice or perm rods and subsequent overall look.
Should you perm curly hair?
As has already been established, your Stylist will seek to exhaust every option before considering a perm on hair that already has existing curls. The answer is therefore not a straightforward ‘yes’ or ‘no’ but rather the question of whether you should perm curl hair begs more questions. Your Stylist will likely seek to establish what you hope to achieve from perming your hair, what you have struggled with prior to your consultation, why you believe that a perm is the best solution, your health of hair, establish what you haven’t tried and to show you tips and tricks to ensure that, A) alternatives that can be done at home, and B) whether through intervention and a haircut you can begin to love your curls again.
Your Stylist will be acutely aware that certain curls may be too fry and damaged to achieve a perm and actually what your hair requires is an injection of moisture. If your hair is dry or damaged, we recommend JOICO’s Four Step Treatment. This is both cost-effective and a fantastic method for reinvigorating your dry and damaged lifeless hair. This in itself could offer the starting point to support your hair health and existing curls whilst if you do choose to perm, hair must be healthy and therefore the starting point is crucial.
Conclusion
Perming curly hair is very possible but not always the first solution and a consultation with your Stylist (and critically one that fundamentally understands both curly hair and perms) is really important. If you desire a different curl patten, volume or evenness from your curls, a perm can prove to be a sensible choice. That being said, a Stylist will seek to explore every available option to ensure not only the best rest but the easiest and most cost-efficient option.
A perm isn’t always the first or only option available to you and sometimes the best option is doing the basics well. A detailed consultation will greatly assist in weighing up your best option and whilst a perm can be the best option, keep an open mind and work with your Stylist to decipher your next best move.
If you are feeling lost in what could work best for you, leave it to us. Our consultations work through any question you might have, logistics and we too make recommendations based upon your lifestyle and hair type.
