Balayages in Abingdon
Balayage is one of the most popular hair colouring techniques famed for its natural finish, soft blend, and low-maintenance appeal and critically the number one choice by far for clients looking for their first ever hair colour! We find in-salon consultations to be highly effective in breaking down the logistics of different hair colouring services, including balayage. With every colour service consultation the question of ‘how often do you need to get balayage done?’ arises. Different colour services require different frequency of appointments, so how does balayage compare when looking to keep your colour looking its best?
If you are considering something different, our balayage service page can help. Finally, if you’re new to the salon and not sure how to get the most value from your next appointment, need a consultation or would value a conversation before booking, call or send a WhatsApp message on 01235 534705

Balayage maintenance FAQ's
How often will I need a balayage
One of the main attractions of balayage is how long it can last without requiring constant top-ups. Most clients find that they only need to refresh their balayage every three to six months. Unlike traditional highlights, which grow out with a harsh line at the roots, balayage grows out in a much softer and more blended way (here’s how you can achieve a softer balayage). This means you can go longer between appointments without your colour looking unkempt or patchy. The frequency at which you’ll need a top-up largely depends on how bold or subtle your balayage is, how fast your hair grows, and how much contrast exists between your natural colour and the balayage tones.
How long can a balayage last for?
Without intending to overcomplicate the topic of balayage, your choice of colour and the placement of lighter pieces really matter. On the subject of colour, if your hair is naturally quite dark and the balayage pieces are significantly lighter, the lifespan of the balayage will be less than say, a warmer balayage overall. When you soften the contrast, it’s much easier to embrace your hair colour as it grows out. The second consideration is the placement of your foils and critically the size of your balayage pieces. The most popular type of application which grows out much more gracefully (and best of all looks great!) are babylights which are delicate lighter pieces. These are hugely effective when blending, introducing a lighter shade and when your Stylist is seeking to encourage a soft regrowth.
In principle if you are tactful with the volume of foils, your choice of colour and the placement of your balayage pieces, some balayages if well maintained can largely grow out with in theory no follow up appointment. Whilst it isn’t necessarily best practice nor advised when considering best practice, it is plausible if you are to work with your Stylist for your ideal low-maintenance (or even maintenance-free) hair colour. The key component is that balayage doesn’t touch your root area and so any new hair ‘pushes’ your balayage further down and considering not all balayage pieces are applied consistently, they will grow out much more gracefully when compared with a tint or highlights.
Will my balayage still look good in six months?
Yes and no. Assuming your balayage is both bleached and toned, there are two considerations. Firstly most peoples hair will grow at the rate of 0.5 inches per four weeks. The second consideration is how well maintained your toner is and understanding how toners work. This can be helpful when considering your anticipated frequency of appointment longer term. As your hair grows, this will ‘push’ your balayage further down and as such assuming that your balayage has been well executed, the only thing you will need to consider is a ‘faded’ or ‘duller’ look in six months time. Given the expected performance of a toner, this is perfectly natural and can be corrected with a new toner if you’re not quite ready for another full balayage. Whilst your Stylist will be unable to control hair growth in-salon, your Stylist can help maintain the continuity and health of your hair with in-salon treatments and takeaway products to use away from the salon.
Can I just let my balayage grow out?
To ensure that your hair colour is looking as good as it can be, you should anticipate a balayage refresh appointment between two and four times per year. However if you no longer wish to continue the upkeep of your balayage, certain balayages can grow out better than others and in many cases avoid suddenly appearing neglected or mismatched. If you choose not to refresh your balayage after several months, your hair won’t suddenly look mismatched or neglected, but it may start to lack definition and dimension. On the plus side it’s the choice of colour which is most passable if you’re motivated to grow a colour out without follow up appointments. On the other hand there are considerations to be made for when your balayage will inevitably begin to appear dull or dry and any tone beginning to appear more brassy. If you are considering letting your balayage grow out, there is a strong case to be made for regular toners and occasional treatments which can be delivered to maintain your hair health cost efficiently.
It’s too worth noting that not all balayages look the same and with any hair colour there is no one-size-fits-all answer for how long you can leave any balayage. For example lighter balayages on darker hair will require greater upkeep than a balayage that showcases 2-3 levels of lightening with less of a contrasting colour.
Conclusion
Balayage is by some distance the colour of choice if you are unable to consistently maintain your hair colour. It’s important that if you are considering leaving more time between appointments that your choice of balayage is compatible. If you are unsure what to ask for, ask your Stylist at your next consultation and being as transparent as possible can be helpful to both your Stylist and their ability to deliver against your brief (as much information as clearly as possible is of great help). In conclusion a balayage can look beautiful so long as it’s well-maintained, your initial consultation covers your ideal time-frame between appointments and your Stylist understands the brief. Expect appointments every 3-6 months on average.
If you are feeling lost in what could work best for you, leave it to us. Our consultations work through any question you might have, logistics and we too make recommendations based upon your lifestyle and hair type.
