Half Head or Full Head Highlights - Which one do you actually need in Abingdon, Oxfordshire
It’s one of the most common questions we get asked at Wisteria Avenue and it’s a genuinely useful one to understand before you book. Full head or half head of highlights sounds like a straightforward choice, but the right answer depends on your hair, your base colour, the look you’re going for, and how much you want to spend. Getting it wrong means either paying for more than you need or leaving the salon without the result you were hoping for.
Here’s everything you need to know to make the right decision.
Half Head or Full Head Highlights FAQ's
What Is the Difference Between a Full Head and Half Head of Highlights?
The names are fairly self-explanatory, but the distinction matters more than most people realise.
A half head of highlights typically covers the top section of the hair or in Lehmann’s terms the bits of your hair that are most visible when your hair is down. This is usually the top and sides, with the underneath left as your natural colour. The result is a brightening effect that adds dimension and lightness where it’s most visible without lifting the entire head.
A full head of highlights covers everything; top, sides, and underneath. The result is a more comprehensive, all-over lightening effect that tends to look brighter and more uniform throughout. When you run your fingers through your hair or wear it up, the colour is consistent from root to tip and underneath as well as on top.
Who Is a Half Head of Highlights Right For?
A half head of highlights works particularly well if your hair is naturally on the lighter side to begin with. If your base colour is already fairly light, a medium blonde or light brown, for example presents a contrast between highlighted sections and your natural colour underneath is quite small. The result looks naturally blended and the underneath sits quietly rather than creating an obvious two-tone effect.
It’s also a strong choice if you’re new to highlights and want to try something without fully committing. The result is softer, the cost is lower, and if you decide you’d like to go further at your next appointment, moving from a half head to a full head is straightforward.
Finally, a half head suits clients who tend to wear their hair down most of the time. If your hair is always down, the underneath is rarely visible, so paying for a full head when you’ll never see the difference isn’t always the best use of your money.
Who Is a Full Head of Highlights Right For?
A full head of highlights makes the most sense if your natural base colour is darker. On darker hair, leaving the underneath natural can create a visible contrast that looks less blended and more obviously two-tone, particularly when the hair is tied up or moved around. A full head avoids that by ensuring the colour is consistent throughout.
It’s also the better choice if you wear your hair up regularly. If you’re putting your hair in a ponytail, a bun, or a half-up style frequently, the underneath is on show and a half head will look noticeably darker in those situations.
If your goal is a very bright, light, or platinum result, a full head is almost always necessary. Achieving significant overall lightness from a half head alone is difficult because the darker underneath pulls the overall appearance back towards your natural colour.
Does the Length of Your Hair Affect the Decision?
Yes and it’s something that doesn’t always get factored in. On shorter hair, the difference between a full head and a half head is less dramatic because there simply isn’t as much hair to cover. On longer hair, the distinction becomes more significant both in terms of the visual result and the time and cost involved.
If you have very long or thick hair, a full head of highlights is a considerable undertaking both in appointment time and price. In some cases, a well-placed half head with a toner applied over the top to blend the natural colour can achieve a result that’s very close to a full head at a lower cost and in less time. This is exactly the kind of thing worth discussing at a consultation before you commit to either option.
Is there a middle ground?
Balayage is also worth considering as an alternative to foil highlights if what you’re primarily after is a natural, blended result with low maintenance. Rather than sectioning the hair into uniform panels, balayage paints colour selectively to create a softer, more gradual effect. Whether that’s more appropriate than highlights depends entirely on the look you’re going for and it’s something we’d always discuss at a consultation before recommending one over the other.
How much does it cost?
Pricing varies depending on the salon, the stylist’s experience, your hair length, and the technique used. At Wisteria Avenue in Abingdon, the best way to get an accurate price for your specific hair is to come in for a free consultation. We’ll look at your hair, understand what you’re trying to achieve, and give you a clear figure before you commit to anything.
What we’d always say is that highlights are a service where the starting point and anticipated end result can make a sizeable difference. Moreover foil placement including type of foils (babylights, AirTouch, back-to-back foils etc), sectioning, processing time, and toning all contribute to whether highlights are a straightforward or more complex process.
How do you know which is right for you?
The honest answer is that it depends on factors that are difficult to assess without actually looking at your hair including your base colour, your hair’s condition, your lifestyle, and the specific result you’re hoping to achieve. That’s exactly what a consultation is for.
At Wisteria Avenue in Abingdon, we offer free colour consultations for exactly this reason. Come in, show us what you’re working with, tell us what you want to achieve, and we’ll give you a straight recommendation including whether a full head, half head, or something in between is the right call for your hair specifically.
