AirTouch FAQ's
What is AirTouch?
AirTouch is a colouirng technique that can be applied to balayage or highlights. The best way to think of AirTouch when used to create balayage or highlights and taking them to the next level with a much softer and blended feel. When your Stylist applied your hair colour, they typically use an approach called ‘backcombing’ which helps to ‘comb’ unwanted hairs when applying your desired colour or bleach to a section of hair. For example, when using AirTouch for highlights as a technique, a stylist uses a hairdryer to blow out shorter hairs, baby hairs, and weaker strands, leaving behind the stronger, healthier hairs that will be coloured, rather than backcombing. The concluding effect creates a seamless colour without any harsh lines or excessive contrast which can sometimes occur when backcombing.
AirTouch is famed for not only its seamless blend but as a byproduct the natural looking regrowth (the transition between your natural hair colour and your existing lightened hair. So if your intention is a longer lasting colour, AirTouch represents a great offering.
Not sure if AirTouch is for you? Here’s another way of achieving soft blended highlights.
Why would I need AirTouch?
Most clients won’t take advantage of AirTouch because their existing balayage or highlights work well for them. However for anyone looking for a noticeably softer and well blended colour, AirTouch is unmatched and is to be seen as aa superior technique, albeit a more time consuming one that offers a softer alternative with a greater lifespan meaning gaps between appointments are greater.
For clients with fine hair, AirTouch is highly effective. The technique takes advantage of pressurised air from a hairdryer which uses the air separation technique to ensure that the ‘unwanted’ strands are removed leaving only the healthiest strands to be are coloured, reducing damage and preventing excessive processing.
Is AirTouch just balayage or highlights?
While AirTouch shares some similarities with typical balayage and traditional highlighting techniques, it does look and feel different from AirTouch balayage and highlights.
- ‘Normal’ highlights: Highlights take advantage of backcombing and foils from roots to ends with usually anything between one and three colours. You can apply highlights in varies forms including but limited to babylights, back-to-back foils or ‘chunky’ highlights, however the application is designed to create contrast between lighter and natural hair. These sorts of highlights whilst they look great will present noticeable regrowth and your Stylist will expect to see you return to the salon usually in 3 months time.
- ‘Normal’ balayage: Balayage is usually applied using a freehand technique or using foils (this is called foilayage) however both techniques are able to create sun-kissed hair.
- AirTouch technique: AirTouch uses a hairdryer to remove shorter hairs before applying colour. This method ensures a more evenly balanced and blended result and reduces damage to delicate or weaker strands.
What does AirTouch look like?
The final result of AirTouch depends on whether you seek a balayage or highlights. The common denominator that is identifiable when looking at an AirTouch balayage or highlights is both in how it is applied and the overall end result. You can establish the differences between aa ‘normal’ colour and an AirTouch by the following:
- Softness: The best way to describe it is a natural lightness. Young children with longer blonde hair often showcase more than one shade of blonde. It’s irregular to see just a flat blonde colour, rather you will see lots of subtle differences in blonde shades with some slightly lighter than others and each colour is very delicate.
- Dimensional: Dimension is present, however the transition from light to dark is much less noticeable.
- Regrowth: As your hair grows out, the regrowth (different in colour from your natural base colour at your roots) when compared to the lighter highlights is much less leading to softer regrowth and less regular appointments.
Conclusion
AirTouch is an effective means to both softening and ensuring that your chosen highlights or balayage are easier to maintain. The benefits of AirTouch mean that you have a hair colour that will look far more natural than most and if you are looking for a point of difference, you can take advantage of the same appointment, same colours but with a difference!
