Wisteria Avenue is a Proudly LGBTQ+ Friendly Salon in Abingdon, Oxfordshire
Finding the right hair salon is personal. It’s not just about finding someone who can cut or colour your hair well – it’s about finding somewhere you feel comfortable, welcome, and completely yourself from the moment you walk through the door.
For many people in the LGBTQ+ community, that search can take longer than it should. Not every salon feels like a genuinely safe and welcoming space, and past experiences of feeling judged, misunderstood, or simply out of place can make the whole process of booking a new salon feel more daunting than it ought to.
At Wisteria Avenue in Abingdon, Oxfordshire, we want to be clear: everyone is welcome here. That includes every member of the LGBTQ+ community, without exception and without any awkwardness about it.
LGBTQ+ Friendly Salon FAQ's
What Does Being an LGBTQ+ Friendly Salon Actually Mean?
It’s a phrase that gets used a lot, so it’s worth being specific about what it means in practice at Wisteria Avenue.
It means every client who comes through our door is treated with the same warmth, respect, and care regardless of who they are, how they identify, or how they present. It means you won’t feel judged, you won’t have to explain yourself, and you won’t be made to feel out of place.
It means our team won’t make assumptions. We won’t assume your pronouns, your relationship, your gender identity, or what kind of style you’re looking for based on how you look when you walk in. We’ll ask, we’ll listen, and we’ll work with what you actually tell us.
It also means that when you sit in our chair and tell us what you want, we take it seriously. Whether you’re looking for a style that feels more authentically you, something that reflects a change you’re going through, a look that’s more gender-affirming, or simply a great haircut with no agenda attached – we’re here for it, and we’ll give it the same care and attention we bring to every appointment.
Does my Hair & Identity matter?
For many people, hair is deeply connected to identity. A new haircut or colour isn’t just an aesthetic choice – it can be an expression of who you are, a step in a personal journey, or something that simply makes you feel more like yourself when you look in the mirror.
We understand that. And we think it matters. Our consultations are designed to be genuinely conversational. We don’t rush, we don’t push you towards what’s easiest for us, and we don’t have a fixed idea of what you should want before you’ve even sat down. We ask questions, we listen to the answers, and we give you our honest professional opinion about what will work – while always respecting that the final decision is yours.
If you’ve had experiences in salons where you felt your stylist wasn’t really listening, or where you left with something that didn’t feel right, we’d genuinely love the opportunity to show you a different kind of appointment.
What is the salon like?
Our salon is spread across two floors. Alongside our main ground floor salon, our private upstairs room offers a quieter, more enclosed space for clients who prefer a more personal one-on-one appointment away from the main floor.
If you’d feel more comfortable in a private setting – for any reason at all – just let us know when you book and we’ll make sure that’s arranged for you. No explanation needed, no questions asked.
We also offer silent appointments for clients who prefer minimal conversation during their visit. Beyond the essentials – what you’re looking for, what you’d like to achieve – we simply get on with it. No small talk, no music, no obligation to fill the silence. If that sounds appealing, it’s available to any client who wants it.
Can I come as a first-timer?
We know that trying a new salon can feel like a leap of faith, particularly if you’ve had uncomfortable experiences elsewhere. So here’s what a first appointment at Wisteria Avenue actually looks like.
You’ll be greeted warmly when you arrive. Before anything else, your stylist will sit down with you for a proper consultation – not a quick two-minute chat before picking up the scissors, but a genuine conversation about what you’re looking for, what you’ve liked and disliked in the past, and what we think will work well for your hair. This is your opportunity to ask anything you want, share anything you think is relevant, and get an honest answer from someone who knows what they’re talking about.
If you’d prefer to come in for a standalone consultation before committing to a full appointment, that’s completely fine too. We offer free consultations and there’s no obligation to book anything on the day.
Why do LGBTQ+ friendly appointments matter?
Wisteria Avenue is a small, independent salon and the culture here reflects the people who work in it. Kindness isn’t a policy we’ve written on a wall – it’s just how we operate, and it applies to everyone who walks through our door equally.
We also think that salons have a responsibility to be welcoming spaces. Hair appointments are intimate – you’re trusting someone with something that matters to you, in close proximity, for an extended period of time. That experience should feel comfortable and safe for everyone, full stop.
There are still too few salons that actively and genuinely position themselves as LGBTQ+ friendly. We’re one of them, and we’re proud of that. If it matters to you to know that before you book, we hope this gives you the reassurance you’re looking for.
Do I need to disclose anything personal before booking?
Not at all. You’re welcome to share whatever feels relevant to your appointment, but there’s no expectation or requirement to disclose anything personal. A booking is just a booking.
Can I have a private appointment away from the main salon floor?
Yes. Our upstairs room is available for clients who prefer a more private, one-on-one environment. Just mention it when you get in touch and we’ll arrange it.
