When you should get a wash and cut FAQ's

Why would I not book a blow dry with a haircut?

For many clients it’s typically for one or a combination of the following reasons; it’s a shorter appointment, they don’t want their hair styled, they prefer it to dry naturally and a wash and cut is more cost-effective. In some cases clients just don’t know what to ask for at the salon! If you are someone that isn’t sure what to ask for or how to ask for it, this blog might helpA wash and cut is also ideal if you are on the go and don’t need a Stylist to professionally blow dry your new cut and often times it’s a practical choice motivated by time constraints to mode of transport if you’re cycling for example.

Why would I book a blow dry with a haircut?

A wash and cut is a functional choice and efficient for routinely booked hair appointments. However a blow dry offers many benefits namely the feel good factor of seeing your haircut in its best light to ensuring both you and your Stylist are satisfied with the shape and overall haircut. In most cases when switching to a new haircut or if it has been many months since your last haircut then a blow dry for many Stylists will be a non-negotiable requirement.

‘New’ haircuts require Stylists to make changes and when cutting wet your Stylist may not feel comfortable that they are able to execute the perfect style when wet and in many cases a ‘restyle’ option (changing from one style to another) will necessitate a wash, haircut, blow dry and more cutting to touch up areas which aren’t always visible when wet. The blow dry is an essential when undergoing a significant cut, or a complete restyle, as a blow dry can help show off your new cut to you, your Stylist and identify ares for improvement.

In most cases blow dry has a ‘feel good’ factor and for others confidence booster. Trying to replicate salon blow drys at home is hard skill to master, let alone delivering on your own hair! A professional blow dry can leave your hair looking great whilst showing off your colour, cut or new style whilst emphasising your face shape much more effectively. It’s too worth mentioning that the right Stylist will be able to deliver aa blow dry that will last for days!

How often should I book a wash and cut?

As a rule of thumb short haircuts require intervention quicker than longer styles. For example an undercut will lose its shape quicker than say, long layers. Whilst the frequency of your haircut in a worst case scenario shouldn’t exceed three months, shorter haircut styles are advantageous to be cut every four to six weeks and longer styles every eight to twelve. Anything beyond this time frame or a change a style would benefit from a restyle option which is inclusive of a blow dry.

Specifically clients looking at growing their hair out, booking a wash and cut every three months is fine although anything longer may necessitate a blow dry to ensure a consistent and balanced haircut designed to ensure splits are removed and any excessive breakage is addressed.

If I want a different haircut, should I still book a wash and cut?

If you are considering a completely new haircut, it is usually best to book a restyle option that includes a blow dry so as to avoid a scenario of leaving the salon without your Stylist being able to qualify if they are satisfied with your haircut. A wash and cut is suitable for maintaining an existing style or making minor changes, but a major change would require both additional time the choice of service being a restyle.

Another scenario where you may wish to revert from a wash and cut to a restyle with a blow dry option is in the event you are planning to go from long hair to a short style, you’re changing your hair’s overall shape, a restyle is advantageous. There is to a lesser extent an upside for your Stylist to show you how you can wear your hair, style it and what you should be doing at home. Our Stylists show you ‘how’ and whilst not all salons do this, there is in our view an upside to ensuring you are shown what the benefits are to your haircut and what you can be doing from home. Here’s a tip for blow drying your hair at home.

Conclusion

A wash and cut is a salons bread and butter. It’s convenient, cost-effective and a time-efficient service if you’re on the go that requires no styling. However if you are changing style, it’s been longer than a few months or you’re going from long to short then a wash and cut may not be the best option and you should favour a restyle option for your next appointment.
