How often should you get a haircut? In Abingdon

A good haircut isn’t just about how it looks, it’s about how it makes your feel, how effectively it meets your needs, the ongoing maintenance, how it accentuates your features and whether it’s compatible with your lifestyle. But how long should your haircut last before you need to book your next salon appointment? Many people leave it months (or even years) between appointments, with others returning monthly. While there isn’t a single rule that applies to everyone, there is a formula that most clients can stick to.

In our daily blog we work through what your Stylist thinks, what the science suggests and what the happy medium is for booking your next appointment to ensure that your hair looks its very best.

For more information visit our ladies haircut service page or men’s haircut service page. Finally, if you’re new to the salon and not sure how to get the most value from your next appointment, need a consultation or would value a conversation before booking, call or send a WhatsApp message on 01235 534705.

What is a good haircut?

A good haircut isn’t just about the cut. It’s how well it meets your needs, your lifestyle, how much time you intend to spend styling it each morning, your hair type, texture and how it grows out over time. The best haircuts aren’t always those that are obvious to others and there are a number of factors to consider. For example if you life a hectic lifestyle consisting of riding horses, walking dogs and working long hours, yet weekends are spent enjoying dining experiences, the key might be something that is easy to maintain Monday to Friday, yet versatile yet adaptable to introducing a soft curl when looking for something different. Not all haircuts can compliment both components so one ‘good’ haircut isn’t necessarily ‘good’ for the next person. For example a blunt haircut (also known as a one-length haircut) won’t suit all lifestyles nor hair types, whereas layers may suit others.

When expertly done, a haircut should enhance your overall look while also making daily styling easier. That being said even the best haircuts don’t last and eventually they will start to lose their structure as time passes.

How long should a haircut last?

As a rule of thumb, longer haircuts will generally last for longer, in particular curly styles will better disguise any split ends (although it’s important to recognise that they still exist and that should prevent a regular cut). Shorter haircuts for both men and women will begin to lose their shape within 4-6 weeks on average to ensure that your haircut is looking as good as it can. Mid-length and longer styles can last a bit longer, typically around 8 to 12 weeks. However, 12 weeks is often the absolute maximum before the hair begins to look straggly and loses its shape irrespective of hair length.

While longer hair can in theory get away with fewer appointments, anything beyond every three months as a worst case scenario between haircuts can lead to unnecessary and radical hair appointments as a consequence of addressing bigger split ends, thinning at the ends, and more drastic haircuts. Science tells us with some certainty that hair grows at an average rate of 0.5 inches per month, so consider that every three months, you’ve gain approximately 1.5 inches. Our Stylists advocate taking 0.5 inches and thus you have gain one inch of healthy and thicker hair (rather than gaining length but length that is compromised and visibly thinner). Here’s why you should cut your hair regularly.

How do I know when to get a haircut?

There are a few clear signs that it’s time to book your next haircut:

  • Split ends: Splits actually happen earlier than you might think and in most cases in just a matter of weeks. Splits travel from the bottom up so the longer you leave it, the more that your hair will split. If the entirety of the split isn’t addressed (for example if only half of the split is cut), hair will present the illusion that it isn’t growing. Splits prevent you from achieving longer and thicker hair in the long run.
  • Shape: As hair grows, its structure changes. Layers may become heavy, fringes may grow too long, and shorter cuts can lose their definition. For shorter styles, this is much more important and the window of opportunity is typically inside of 1.5 months.
  • Harder to style: The longer that time passes, your hair won’t do what it could do previously. As hair grows and it loses its shape, the ability to style becomes more challenging for more specific styles.
  • Ends are thinning: Over time, hair naturally thins at the ends, especially if it hasn’t been trimmed in a while. A haircut refreshes the ends, giving the illusion of thicker, healthier hair.

Why is my stylist telling me to get my hair cut so soon?

In most instances clients will assume that being told to get a haircut every 6-12 weeks (dependent on hair type, texture, haircut) is a motivated Stylist that wants you back in their chair. In reality, it’s through professional experience, supported by science and backed by the experience of their salon seeing thousands of clients and recognising trends (both good and bad). Very few Stylists are actually motivated by the financial incentive of seeing a client more frequently. Stylists do however pride themselves (in most cases) on best practice and ensuring you’re a walking advertisement for their work!

When hair isn’t cut routinely, split ends travel from the bottom up leading to breakage and thinning hair. The overall look of hair is compromised; we see it across the board with clients. It’s typically long hair that from the root is thicker and it gradually becomes finer and finer the closer the hair is to the ends. In many cases of irregular haircuts, some clients have as much as six inches in some extreme cases of splits meaning that the shortest split it six inches shorter than the longest. Regular haircuts prevent this from happening regularly and the best advantage is longer hair which looks healthier and thicker.

This is also in more extreme cases why some people feel their hair ‘never grows past a certain length’. Hair is always growing yet if the ends are continuously splitting and breaking off, the length never appears to change. Those who embrace regular haircuts reap the benefits of healthier, fuller-looking hair. By keeping up with haircuts on a routinely bases, you prevent drastic haircuts from taking place when you opt for your next haircut appointment.

Conclusion

A good haircut should consist on establishing the foundations of what can work for you through a consultation with your Stylist. Fundamentally any haircut will last anywhere from 6 to 12 weeks, depending on your hair’s length, style, and growth pattern and while curly haircuts can mask splits, they too should prove to last for a maximum of three months in total. The value in regular haircuts is ensuring that your cuts at a minimum address early split ends, breakage and better still reintroducing your style ensuring that it’s easier to maintain day-to-day. Your routine appointment becomes an essential for maintaining strong, well kept hair that grows evenly and remains easy to manage. By following a stylist’s recommendations for haircuts, you can ensure your hair stays looking its best.

If you are feeling lost in what could work best for you, leave it to us. Our consultations work through any question you might have, logistics and we too make recommendations based upon your lifestyle and hair type.
