Taking advantage of the cold setting on a hair dryer in Abingdon
Most of us use a hair dryer in some way whether it’s every day or occasional styling, yet the cold setting is often overlooked nor questioned as to its purpose. Unlike the heat settings which are commonly used for at the very least drying, the cold setting plays a different role. The cold setting helps to create an overall better and longer term style whilst there are some modest benefits to the overall health of your hair. In our daily blog we help you to understand how and when to use the cold setting and the type of difference it can make in the way your hair looks and feels.
If you are considering something different, let us know. Finally, if you’re new to the salon and not sure how to get the most value from your next appointment, need a consultation or would value a conversation before booking, call or send a WhatsApp message on 01235 534705.

Using your hair dryer FAQ's
What is the cold setting for?
If you are styling your hair using a hair dryer, the cold setting can play a significant role in both your overall look and the lifespan of your desired hair style. In Lehmann’s terms, while heat is effective in shaping and setting hair, cool air helps to lock that style in place. This is particularly useful if you are using a round brush, as it helps to hold the shape for longer.
To a lesser extent the cold setting is actually gentler to the hair and will have some protective benefits. High heat, particularly when applied close to your hair can weaken the hair’s structure over time, leading to dryness, frizz, and potential damage. Finishing your drying cycle with cool air helps to smooth the hair cuticle, reducing frizz and making hair appear shinier. In summary it’s better for your hair and it’s an easy and effective means to enhance styling results for longer.
When would you use the cold setting on a hair dryer?
If you’re using a round brush (think smaller the brush, the bigger the curl and vice versa), use the hot setting followed by the cold setting for roughly 10 seconds. This blow-drying process from hot to cold helps seal the hair cuticle and set the style in place. By comparison if you’re only using heat to style, whilst you will still be able to achieve something, it may not offer the same results nor for the same length of time. So if you’ve used a brush to create volume, curls or waves, switching to the cold setting for a few seconds helps to ‘lock in’ the shape more effectively.
What styles can the cold setting help with?
If you are seeking volume (layered haircuts can help with this too), curls, waves of even straight hair, when used with a round brush the cold setting can work wonders with a variety of styles, especially those that require hold. For waves and curls, whether created naturally or with styling tools, the cold setting helps to set them in place when cold air is held against your desired section of hair for about 10 seconds. Holding each curl in position with your round brush while blasting it with cool air can improve longevity, reducing the chance of curls dropping too quickly.
What are the benefits of using the cold setting?
The obvious benefit is the longevity of your style. The cold setting makes your hair style last for longer, locking it in place and helping your chosen style hold its shape and prevent volume from ‘falling’. If you suffer from a hair type that doesn’t hold a curl or style particularly well, this might be one to try!
The other benefits include being kinder to those with sensitive scalps, helping to maintain the integrity of your hair, a reduction in frizz and a healthier looking finish overall. Whilst some frizz is inevitable, if you seek a longer term solution for frizz-free hair there are gentler alternatives.
Conclusion
The cold setting on a hair dryer is a small but powerful tool that on the whole underutilised. Most of our clients won’t have used it until they have visited us in-salon nor recognise significant difference in hair styling. Our hair appointments typically showcase at least one ‘how to’ during the appointment as a takeaway benefit to styling or maintenance. So whether you’re looking to add longevity to curls, reduce frizz, or achieve a smoother finish, the cold air setting can really add to your end result.
If you are feeling lost in what could work best for you, leave it to us. Our consultations work through any question you might have, logistics and we too make recommendations based upon your lifestyle and hair type.
