The best way to ask for a specific haircut in Abingdon
If you are new to a hair salon or considering a new style, opting for a new haircut can feel daunting not only for fear or choosing a haircut that may not work for you, feeling like you’re making an uninformed choice but also even for of judgement! If you are looking for something new and whether that represents a subtle change or a big change, it’s important that you can feel confident in your ability to ask for the right haircut and style that is most compatible.
In our daily blog we ask our Stylists what really helps them to understand your needs, how clients can best ask and describe what they would like and whether they should feel nervous, anxious or lost when asking for new choice of haircut.
If you are considering something different, our ladies haircuts service page can help. Finally, if you’re new to the salon and not sure how to get the most value from your next appointment, need a consultation or would value a conversation before booking, call or send a WhatsApp message on 01235 534705

Asking for a haircut FAQ's
How can I ask for a specific haircut?
It’s worth noting that ‘good’ Stylists will be able to extract precisely what you are looking for through probing question and through those questions it’s important for you to be as clear and concise as possible when knowing what it is that you would like. However for this approach to prove effective, it’s important that you are able to offer your Stylist as much information as possible for them to be in a position to support your desired look. If you are unable to describe what you would like, pictures are extremely helpful too and this can too prove useful. If you are unsure, here’s everything you need to know about a hair salon consultation and what to expect.
By no means do you need to visit with something very specific in-mind however it’s always a good idea to have some sort of idea in mind, even if it’s an idea of length. Simple descriptions such as ‘I would like something shoulder length’ or ‘I like shorter styles but I need to tie my hair up when I go to the gym’ are sufficiently helpful and can go a long way.
Whilst a capable Stylist should be asking you these questions, don’t be afraid to elaborate on your personal style, lifestyle, what you have struggled with or even things that you would like to float as an idea. For example asking a Stylist ‘I have been thinking about a wolf cut, would something like that work for me?’ can prove highly effective. Good Stylists understand fashion trends and can also point to favourable examples whilst being able to pinpoint inconsistencies. Essentially your Stylist in this instance can identify whether a wolf cut is a good choice, bad choice or make efforts to ensure your next haircut is compatible with frequency of haircuts, day-to-day styling, work, personal life and how you would like it to look. Stylists often are asked for something and when probing they may highlight something that is incompatible so it’s their job to discuss this with you given they want your cut to work for you and critically return to them in the future!
Will a Stylist be able to help me make a decision?
100%, Yes! One of the misconceptions of a hair salon is that your Stylist isn’t there to say ‘yes’ to everything you say. They may object to your suggestions if there is a better alternative, they can base recommendations on your hair type, or in some cases what you seek isn’t achievable and in other scenarios deemed to be unsafe.
One of the advantages of visiting an experienced stylist is their ability to offer tailored advice. A competent Stylist can guide you, offering expert advice on a particular haircut that would suit your face shape, hair type and even lifestyle factors. Many haircuts and styles can be tailored to suit whereas others which can look great, require upkeep which may not be in-tune with your requirements. A Stylists expert knowledge will be well placed to guide you so don’t ever hesitate to ask questions.
In most cases when showing an image or describing an exact person of style, the haircut will have some variance given the variable for hair type (thick/fine/slight wave/very straight etc). Most haircuts can usually be tweaked to suit you ensuring that it works for your hair and face shape whilst ensuring it’s much more manageable dependent upon your basic requirements. It’s important to trust your stylist’s advice, especially if you’re open to new ideas or a fresh perspective and if you have any concerns or feel that you haven’t been understood to reiterate this. The advance consultation is designed to identify these areas and any Stylist or indeed salon would encourage you to speak openly. Here’s some more help as to how you can ask for something at the salon.
Is it rude to bring a picture?
Some people may worry that bringing a picture to the salon could be perceived as rude, yet your Stylist will most likely appreciate the effort! If anything this helps your Stylist avoid needing to narrow down your flavour of haircut and this is one of the most helpful ways to communicate your ideas. If you are reading this, bring a picture and if you can, highlight which areas you like. Your Stylist won’t be expecting you to use hairdressing jargon but do you best to describe what you like. For example ‘I really like those bits at the front as they fall past the shoulder. I just like the natural look’. Something like this identifies your motivation and your Stylist can then help to translate this into tangible ideas that can work for you.
If you are going to bring pictures, Pinterest is a helpful starting point, as is Google and Instagram. It’s however worth noting that many posted pictures seek to showcase the very best work of a hair salon and the heavy style can often misrepresent the true haircut. An unused search term when looking for haircuts is to specify the hair type. For example ‘long layers straight hair’ will show layered haircuts without any styling whereas a search for ‘long layers‘ will invariably showcase beautifully styled hair when in reality when waking up on Monday morning hair needs to be versatile enough to be work tied up, straight or heavily styled (badly layered haircuts can be masked through styling).
When showing pictures, try to use it to identify the style or vibe that you are aiming for. It’s important to remember that no two heads of hair are exactly the same, so while a picture can provide valuable insight for your Stylist and they shouldn’t be used as an exact reflection of exactly what you set out to achieve. For example if you bring in a picture of a celebrity’s haircut, be prepared for your Stylist to make adjustments based on your hair type and texture.
Should I know hairdressing teminology?
No, and it’s far from essential. In most instances whilst some clients will know their stuff, 95% of people won’t know many if any technical terms used in-salon. In-fact many terms are misused and that can cause complications so whilst it can sometimes be helpful, your Stylist would be happier if you’re authentic, try your best to describe how you feel and then your Stylist will try to add value and answer any questions or queries. So if you don’t know what ‘layers’ are, don’t worry. You’re far from alone and no, your Stylist won’t judge you! If you’d like to know what layers are, Stylists usually love to educate so don’t be afraid.
Will I be made to feel silly if I ask for the wrong thing?
One thing Stylists love is to help and if you present something ‘new’ and they feel their is an opportunity to guide you in the right direction, ironically they will welcome you choosing to visit. Whilst we understand the fear of saying the ‘wrong’ thing or asking for something that may not work, Stylists won’t discriminate nor will they cast judgement. What a Stylist will do in the event that there is potentially a better option to explore or something may not be a good fit is to ask questions to ensure they can make a more educated conclusion and work through that with you drawing upon what you need and most typically that’s a direction which clients appreciate.
If you are feeling unsure, whilst Stylists across the board will consult in some form before doing anything in the way of cutting, it’s the better Stylists that will quiz you and add their opinion based upon their in-depth knowledge of fashion and having cut many different hair types over a number of years. In summary a good Stylist will be open to discussing your concerns and offering suggestions based on their expertise. So don’t be afraid of floating something different, Stylists love challenges!.
Conclusion
Asking for a specific haircut need not be the challenge that you might think it is. Whether you seek a complete transformation or a minor tweak, Stylists typically will not only welcome out-of-the-box suggestions, they themselves will be excited by the challenge so don’t hold back! If you are however considering a change but certain to communicate your ideas clearly and openly. Pictures can be supportive and whilst they shouldn’t be used as an exact means to identify an identical haircut, be open to suggestions and tweaks to ensure a haircut can be tailored successfully to your hair type, texture, face shape and where appropriate, lifestyle too.
