Haircuts for your perm in Abingdon
Perms are back and they’ve never been better! If you seek a change and want to add both long-lasting curls and much needed volume to your hair, a perm can hugely transform your look. Perms come in different forms too from soft beachy waves to tighter spiral perms, however many clients booking perms often ask whether they should get their haircut whilst many avoid the topic of a haircut entirely.
In our daily blog we ask our Stylists whether you should be booking a cut alongside your perm, is it sensible have one, does a perm come with a haircut and why a haircut is important.
If you are considering something different, our perm service page can help. Finally, if you’re new to the salon and not sure how to get the most value from your next appointment, need a consultation or would value a conversation before booking, call or send a WhatsApp message on 01235 534705

Cutting Perms FAQ's
Does a perm include a haircut?
In most cases when booking a service such as colour or a perm doesn’t automatically include a haircut. Perms are generally a similar price to an entry-level hair colour and the cost of a haircut as part of this overall price would represent a loss-making service for salons if booking a perm. In short, a haircut is typically an extra. While some hair salons may offer a haircut, it’s typically rare and far from common. Across 99% of professional salons, expect to pay for a haircut separately and since perms chemically alter the structure of your hair, it’s best to plan for the eventuality of needing to book a haircut alongside your perm.
If you’re unsure whether to book a haircut, your chosen salon should be scheduling a consultation with you in advance of any booking to establish suitability for a perm. Here are the most popular types of perms to consider when booking. Incidentally perms are slightly more popular with men this year! Here are the most popular perm options for men.
Should you cut your hair when having a perm?
Whilst not in every case a necessity, nine out of ten times a haircut is wise and your Stylist will make this recommendation to create a more balanced and flattering shape. It’s too worth noting that the skillset and type of cut on curly hair differs significantly from cutting straighter hair styles. Curly hair behaves very differently from straight hair so if you seek to achieve as much from your new curls as possible, a curly haircut specifically makes for a good choice. Secondly, split ends tend not to respond well to perms and often-times won’t achieve a curl. In this instance a haircut whether at the time of the perm or in the immediate days after becomes an essential requirement to avoid it interfering with the perm.
What will permed hair look like without a haircut?
If you choose not to have a haircut with your perm, the results will depend upon your initial starting point pre-perm. For example if you had split ends before your perm, it’s highly likely that a perm will exacerbate your split ends and a haircut will prove more essential if you want to showcase well balanced curls. In this example a perm without a haircut won’t look as polished as you might expect.
In many cases your Stylist will be well versed in understanding the behaviour of your curls and how your existing haircut or a different haircut will serve curly hir. Whether it’s dry, damaged or split ends or a haircut that won’t support a curly look. This typically translates as ‘jagged’ or ‘unpermed’ ends above all else in the event you don’t cut the ends of hair post perm.
That being said, if your hair is already well-shaped and in good condition with no obvious concerns, you might be able to get away with just the perm. That being said, most stylists would recommend at least a light haircut (which is most common) to refresh the your split ends and ensure the curls sit and are matched with a curly specific haircut.
Will a curly haircut help my perm?
In the same way that a curly haircut can elevate curls, it can do exactly the same for a perm! A curly haircut is perhaps more universally recognised amongst the curly hair community of clients (who are extremely knowledgeable and loyal!), however for perms a typical haircut designed for straight hair won’t maximise the potential of your new curls. When a curly haircut aligns with a perm it makes for a great combination; it can greatly enhance the look of a perm, your curls sit properly and they are made to look more defined, natural and just as importantly they are much easier to style.
Curly haircuts benefit from different techniques. There is a technique called ‘point cutting’ which is often attributed to curly hair which is much more sensitive to curly hair and one for which is largely unused when it comes to straighter hair types. When it comes to curly hair, most curly haircuts that have been cut using techniques better suited to straight hair usually present as ‘triangular’ and lack bounce or movement which ordinarily allows curly hair can thrive. By shaping permed hair correctly, a curly haircut can ensure that your perm looks more natural and has a much more well rounded feel and look.
Curly hair products can really support your curls too.
Conclusion
Getting a haircut is a separate service when booking a perm and whilst it isn’t mandatory, it is most common to schedule a haircut alongside it to ensure best results. Perms do many things; they add curl and volume to your hair and the combination of both can be most flattering. When a perm is applied without a haircut, any split ends can present as more visible and it’s commonplace that split ends don’t take so well to permed hair. The benefits of a curly haircut combined with a perm offer to ensure a perm looks healthier and offers a much better shape.
