Silver Hair in Abingdon
Silver hair in 2024 is striking, elegant and a fashion statement irrespective of age. Silver hair paired with the right haircut and style can be very glamorous as hair has evolved in recent years. One time grey or silver hair used to be associated with ageing however it’s now the farthest thing from it!
If you’re living in Oxfordshire and contemplating going silver for the first time, this blog will walk you through what it takes to achieve that iconic silver look, how realistic it is for your hair, and whether it’s the right choice for you.
If you are looking for a new hair colour and need styling and maintenance advice for your hair, one of the most common types of colour is highlights with the other being all over bleaching or scalp bleaching as it’s also known.
Finally, if you’re new to the salon and not sure how to get the most value from your next hair appointment, need a consultation or would value a conversation before booking, call or send a WhatsApp message on 01235 534705.
Silver Hair FAQ's
Why go for silver hair?
There’s usually three primary motivations for going silver. The first is that it looks amazing, it’s striking and it’s elegant. The second reason is blending your natural greys better/trying to get away from routinely colouring hair. In highlighting form this is sensible and greatly assist in reducing the volume of hair colour appointments. The third reason is for something much more standout, eye-catching and striking, usually in the form of an all over bleach. The trend for opting for silver hair is very different from most and you can guarantee to standout from the crowd in the best way possible.
What's the process for silver hair?
It’s worth noting that not every process will be the same. There are some basic assumptions insofar as we expect the hair to be healthy, virgin and a colour for which can achieve silver in one sitting. This isn’t necessarily the same approach that would be applied to other clients with a different starting point or profile and therefore would be subject to some tailoring. Here’s a breakdown of what to expect:
1. Pre-Lightening (Bleaching): As a rule of thumb, colour can’t lift colour. In order to achieve silver, hair requires lightening before toning (which we will come onto). To achieve a clean silver tone, your hair will need to be lightened sufficiently ideally to a pale blonde or even white colour. The bleach ‘colour’ won’t be desirable to walk out of a salon, however it will be essential to achieve silver. Bleach itself isn’t a hair colour, bleach removes pigment (colour) meaning in most cases bleach will leave a variation of red, orange, yellow or white. A light yellow or white is what your Stylist will eventually be looking for. Your desired silver will come later in this process. At this key stage, your Stylist is seeking to create a clean base for the silver toner to work on. If your hair is naturally dark or has been previously coloured, this may involve a different approaches and in some cases additional approaches.
2. Toning: There is a stage between bleaching and toning which is your processing time. This is time where your hair is left to lighten and this is dependent upon a handful of factors including integrity of hair, desired colour and starting point (is your hair dark, light, coloured, resistant etc). Processing time cannot exceed 60 minutes however not every client can expect processing time of that length.
Once the processing time has elapsed and your Stylist is happy, it’s time to wash, towel dry and apply your toner. Toners are your desired colour (in this case silver) which ‘grabs’ onto the lightened hair. In-salon we use JOICO, a US colour brand that deliver a range of toners called ‘Blonde Life Quick Toners’. Within the range toners they offer an amazing Silver which can be used to blend grey, achieve an all over light or deep silver and this can be controlled by your Stylist to soften or add depth dependent upon what you desire.
3. Upkeep: Silvers are different from other colours. There is a tendency to fade as they are considered ‘fashion colours’. The lifespan can vary from client to client, however regular masks, treatments and gentle shampoo’s can be of real benefit.
How do I care for silver hair?
If you decide that silver is the right colour for you, it’s essential to look after your hair properly. Here are some top tips to keep your silver locks looking their best:
Use the appropriate products: This isn’t exclusively sufficient to extend the lifespan of your silver hair, however just as vitally is not washing your hair too frequently. A combination of infrequent washing, gentle shampoo and conditioner though is a winning combination. Ensuring your hair maintains its health and its exposure to harsher products is important.
Hydrate Your Hair: The healthier your hair, the longer your hair will last. At our salon, we offer the JOICO K-PAK Hair Repair Treatment, which is hands down the best option on the market right now if you seek healthy hair.
Minimise Heat Styling: This one is fairly obvious. Heat causes damage. You don’t need to grab the straighteners every day!
Book Regular Toner Appointments: Despite every effort to maintain your hair, toners will fade. The way to think about toners is that they only coat areas of bleach. Whilst they are resistant to a point, toners require maintenance and this extends to reapplication. Toners will begin to fade after a month or so.
Conclusion
Silver hair can be bold for one client and edgy for the next! If you want to switch up your style, going silver could be the new you. Yes, it requires more upkeep that more traditional colours and it does require time and cost investment from you to commit but it can be worth it if you work closely with your chosen salon and Stylist regardless whether that’s with us or elsewhere.
