First-Time Hair Colour in Abingdon
So, youβre thinking about colouring your hair for the first time? It’s exciting and appreciatively it can be overwhelming but don’t worry, our approach is to hold your hand through the process. A combination of education, understanding your habits, lifestyle, fashion sense, your likes and what would work for you is part of our work. There is a lot of in-salon guidance to help you make a more informed decision.
In our daily blog, we help you to understand some of the introductory aspect of hair colouring, what to expect and some options that could work for you if this is your first time.
For more information about bleaching hair, check out our balayage service page and ourΒ highlights service page. First-Time Hair Colour FAQ's
What do the colour terms mean?
Before getting stuck in, you will likely see and hear a lot of popular buzzwords. These will initially seem overwhelming however they needn’t be. So what do they all mean? To get started we have briefly summarised some of the more commonly referenced hairdressing terms below:
- Bleach: Firstly, don’t be scared. When used in a controlled environment, bleach is perfectly safe and a tool to lighten hair. Colour doesn’t lighten hair, however bleach does. You will often see bleach referenced closely with the word ‘toners’. Very simply, bleach lightens hair but it doesn’t colour… This blog walks through how to make hair go lighter.
- Toners: Toners work with bleach to ‘add your colour’. The way to think about bleach is that it will only ever achieve; red, orange or yellow (none of which are appealing shades!), so our chosen toner (your colour) is applied and ‘grabs’ onto the bleach. For example if you are naturally brown and you want to be a gold blonde, the bleach is applied, allowed to process and once lightened it’s then washed off and your toner (in this case a gold blonde) is then applied to achieve a gold blonde. To achieve gold blonde you would need both the blend and the toner in this example.
- Full Head Highlights: The easiest summary of highlights is by how much of the head is covered. A full head of highlights starts from the nape (your neck) and works to the very top of your head.
- Half Head Highlights: The application of a half head is identical to a full head, however the first foil starts half way up your head leaving the section underneath without any hair highlighted.
- T-Section Highlights: A t-section is he same principle, but fewer foils than a half head and the first foil begins even higher than a half head.
- Balayage: When you go somewhere hot on holiday, if you have long hair, the sun lightens the ends of your hair leaving a ‘sun-kissed’ look. Balayage tries to replicate this in-salon in a much more obvious way. Hair is lightened from the mid to ends of your hair for a softer more natural look.
- Tints: Very simply a tint is one colour from root to ends covering every strand of hair in your chosen colour.
- Warm Toner: Warmer doesn’t mean ‘less light’, it means the overall shade. For example; gold, auburn and caramel are warm colours. Certain hair colour and skin tones suit warmer colours.
- Cool Tones: These include but aren’t limited to ash blonde, silvery blonde, champagne blonde.
- Brassy Tones: This usually happens during the bleaching process when you achieve an undesirable colour. Toners are applied to eliminate this issue, however toners do fade over time and if not reapplied you may hear the term ‘brassy tones’.
What are my hair colour options?
Hair colour options can broadly be broken down into three categories; tints, highlights and balayage. So whether youβre ready for a big change or just curious about adding a little something, hair colour is a wonderful way to elevate your look in a big or a small way. Colour can add dimension, create shine or just be an extension of your personality.
Tints:Β
- Tints are very simply one colour from root to end. The one rule of hair colour in this way is that tints cannot take you lighter (for example if your natural hair colour is black and you choose to be blonde, tints can’t do this). However if you are brown and wanted to be a red, they can.
- Tints are ideal if you want to cover every strand of hair from root to end. They offer complete coverage and are incredibly effective if you want to permanently change your whole hair colour.
- Best for: Clients looking for full coverage, particularly if you have greys, or if you want to go darker or enhance your natural colour with a richer shade.
Highlights:
- Highlights are by far the most popular choice of hair colour across the board (not just for first-timers). The introduction of lighter colours in sections from the root helps to blend a lighter shade alongside your natural colour.
- Best for: Adding texture, brightness, and depth without a full colour change. Especially ideal if you want to maintain a natural look.
Balayage:
- Balayage is a technique that applies a lighter colour from the mid to ends of your hair for a sun-kissed look. This option is by-far the lowest-maintenance choice because it doesnβt create a harsh line as your hair grows. As a rule of thumb, any colour or bleach that touches your root creates a line of regrowth which translates to increased upkeep,
- Best for: Anyone seeking a sun-kissed look thatβs low-commitment.
I wouldn't know where to start. Can you help me?
Our consultations are an extension of this blog. We work through what you have seen that you like and your ideas. We explore these in such a way that we can walk you through what those logistics might look like, the feasibility and alternative options to ensure that you can make a balanced decision for or against.Β Our stylists can also assess your hairβs health, condition, and texture, guiding you on what shades would suit your skin tone and lifestyle. Here’s more information about what our standard consultation process looks like.
What look are you going for?
Your choice is likely to be influenced by something. This might be work, or more commonly hair type (fine, thick, curly, grey coverage, flat colour etc). Different applications can achieve different things:
No greys: Balayage or a T-section are the more obvious choices and come recommended. Both give your hair a gentle lift without a dramatic departure from your natural shade.
Some greys: Tints or highlights can work well. A T-section (small number of highlights) can help diffuse greys, while full-head highlights every few months can drastically reduce the percentage of greys.
What sort of upkeep should I be aware of?
If you’re on a budget or routine is important to you, then your decision can greatly influence the frequency of visit to the salon so itβs helpful to know what to expect for each option:
Tints: The upside if they offer 100% coverage. The obvious downside is that they require reapplication every 4-6 weeks to maintain the regrowth (hair grows broadly half an inch every four weeks) so expect to see roots after one month. There is a greater commitment to upkeep here.
Highlights: For a full head or half head, visits every 2-3 months are typical, while a T-section might only need touching up every 3-4 months as it grows out naturally.
Balayage: Generally lasts 3-6 months. Some clients stretch this further, however while possible it does tend to lose its shape around the six month timeframe.
For those wanting to experiment gradually, we also offer ‘charge by the foil’ options, where you can opt for just a few foils. This is a cost-effective way to dip your toe into the world of hair colour without committing to a full head, giving you a taste of what coloured hair might look like. If you are concerned about frequency of visit, here’s more information about how often you should get your hair done.
Conclusion
In our experience, starting with something which offers a manageable change is best. It’s rare that more radical changes (from dark to light, creative colours like blue, greens, purples or full head tints) see regular upkeep and the commitment to returning to maintain the colour. A combination of a vastly different shift in the commitment from zero to every four weeks is too significant a change in behaviour and largely the ask is too great. Balayages and t-sections work well before the change is softer, yet they look great, they are reasonably budget-friendly and the upkeep alongside ongoing maintenance isn’t too tasking.
