Curly Hair Product FAQ's

What are the most popular curly hair products?

There are countless products designed specifically for curly hair, however some are more niche than others whilst others are must-haves for keeping your curls looking and feeling great particularly on a budget. As a curly hair specialist salon we stock a range of Only Curls and JOICO (the latter aren’t a specific curly hair product supplier though they do carry some). Here are some of the more essential products you can benefit from:

  • Curly Hair Shampoos: Curly hair shampoos are specifically formulated for curly hair. They are much more moisturising and dense; if you try to work with curly hair shampoo it’s noticeably thicker. This doesn’t necessarily mean that you need ‘more’, it does take some patience for it to expand when in contact with wet hair.
  • Curly Hair Conditioners: Similarly, curly hair conditioners are a great ‘must have’. Look for formulas that are rich in hydrating ingredients like shea butter, coconut oil, and argan oil.
  • Leave-In Masks: Masks can be hit and miss. The most effective spend will be in-salon; we offer a four step treatment which requires far less up-keep and highly effective and quick results.
  • Curl Creams: If you are investing in one styling product, make sure it’s either a curl cream or a curl gel. Both serve their own purposes and in the case of curl creams these help enhance the shape of your curls while providing hydration and frizz control.
  • Curl Gels: If you desire more of a ‘fixed’ look, gels provide hold and definition, keeping curls in place throughout the day, while mousses add volume and lightweight control

If you are looking for some tips for maintaining your curls, here are our Stylists tips for caring for your curly hair.

Why are curly hair products different?

Fundamentally the texture and behaviour of curly hair differs greatly from straight hair and for this reason it’s no surprise that hair products for curly hair are no different. Curly hair products are formulated specifically to address the unique needs of curls. Unlike straight hair, which can distribute natural scalp oils more easily, curly hair tends to be drier because the shape of the hair strand makes it harder for oils to travel down the length. Here’s some stand out qualities that most curly hair product ranges will offer:

  • Moisture: If there is one thing that curls need more than anything it’s moisture. Moisturising ‘straight hair’ products won’t quite deliver in the same way as curly hair ranges.
  • Curl definition: This is a unique benefit; curly specific formulas help balance the need for supporting your curl pattern without weighing it with heavy or greasy formulas.
  • Frizz: Frizz is something that most with curly hair experience in one form or another. Certain anti-frizz products perform well keeping unruliness at bay.

Can I use non-specific curly hair products?

You can still use ‘straight hair’ or universal hair products on curly hair however they are unlikely to provide the best results for curls. The number one benefit of curls is that they perform when introduced to a moisture intensive environment. Straight hair products are typically lighter and may not offer the level of hydration or curl-enhancing benefits that curly hair needs. So whilst they can be used, don’t expect the same end-result or performance.

Are curly hair products worth buying?

This question is really dependent upon your existing level of satisfaction. If your current products work for you there isn’t likely isn’t a massive incentive to change. That being said there will still likely be a benefit to changing should you see fit. If your budget or uncertainty about investing in curly products is holding you back, many of them are comparably good value for money when compared with other leading in-salon products for purchase. The other benefits for investing in curly hair products have been summarised below:

  • Better hydration: Curls need moisture to stay soft and bouncy, and curly hair products provide the right level of hydration.
  • Frizz control: Using the right shampoos, conditioners, and styling products helps prevent frizz and keeps curls looking polished.
  • Longer-lasting styles: With the right products, curls can hold their shape for longer, reducing the need for constant restyling.
  • Improved hair health: Many curly hair products contain nourishing ingredients that keep hair strong, reducing breakage and split ends.

Here’s three things that you need for curly hair.

Conclusion

Whether you opt to use curly hair products is a personal choice, however in most instances more can be achieved with your curls making it easier to manage, style while keeping your appearance the best it can be. In-salon our Stylists advocate for the use of curl hair specific shampoos, conditioners and at least one styling product (usually a curl gel or a curl cream) dependent upon your hair type and what you seek to achieve. These specialised products really support keeping frizz at bay and are much more effective in maintaining a better curl throughout and for longer.

Curly hair products are specifically designed to provide extra hydration, the core feature across all curl specific products making them a better choice than standard hair products. Ultimately, investing in curly hair products is worth it if you want to maintain healthy, well-defined curls and the switch should be an obvious one if you are eager to improve your existing curls without a significant initial outlay.

If you need a new curly haircut to match your range of products, here’s more information on whether it’s better to wash your hair before a curly haircut.
