Ombre FAQ's
What is an ombre?
Ombre is a form of hair colour service that refers to the French word meaning ‘shadow’ or ‘shade’. This translates literally to the transition from your natural root area, gradually lightening transitioning to a a lighter shade at the ends. The contrast between the two colours (light and dark) can be subtle or more dramatic and this depends on your personal preference. An easy way to identify an ombre is the difference in colour between the ends and roots of hair. If the root colour can’t be seen at the ends of hair, it’s ombre!
What are the benefits of an ombre?
1. Low maintenance: Overwhelmingly, ombre is a big winner when it comes to the maintenance side of hair colour. Often downplayed by salons when considering the longer-term contributors to maintainable hair colours, balayage and ombre are neck and neck. With (typically) natural regrowth there are no harsh regrowth lines and this translates into an easy-to-manage hair colour! Your alternative to ombre is balayage. If you are transitioning from another colour to a balayage, this is known as a balayage transformation.
2.. Enhancement: Ombre adds lightness to your hair. This can enhance it in two ways; namely and most obvious is the aesthetic of lighter ends and second it could offer ‘distraction’ if your hair is fine, flat or just lacking ‘X’. The focus of attention is removed from the negative to the more obvious lightness. In some cases the application of bleach can too present the illusion of thicker hair. Ombre hair colour adds depth and dimension to your hair, making it appear fuller and more voluminous.
3. Medium-long hair: Most haircuts whether medium or long are compatible with an ombre. Hair that is shorter than chin length will likely struggle to achieve the full benefits.
4. Commitment: If you feel that you would benefit from lightening your hair yet don’t want to commit to anything more radical, ombre is a fantastic alternative. It allows you to experiment with lighter colours without sacrificing on needing regular maintenance in the form of monthly or bi-monthly salon visits.
Are ombre's similar to balayage?
Ombre and balayage are often confused notwithstanding by Hair Stylists themselves! The confusion typically comes about due to the type of blend and in many cases repeat balayages can in some case eventually look like an ombre, a more saturated end result.
While balayage creates a more natural, highlighted effect, ombre is a bolder statement colour with a more defined colour transition. If you prefer a blended yet noticeable colour shift, ombre is a great choice. If you want a more sun-kissed, subtle look, balayage might be better suited.
What is the maintenance on an ombre?
The maintenance on an ombre is not bad. In-fact by salon standards it’s one of, if not the most maintainable hair colour consisting of 1-4 appointments annually. The rest of the maintenance is typically made up in the form of haircutting and at-home self care. The is a case to be made for occasional toners in the event of experiencing fade though on the whole most clients won’t necessarily benefit from this.
Conclusion
Ombre hair is stylish, it looks fantastic, it’s eye catching and it’s low-maintenance! It can too be applied and adjusted to suit most hair lengths and cuts and given it appeals to clients that seek a natural root alongside the beauty of lightness, it’s considered a winner amongst salon professionals.
