Lightening hair with highlights in Abingdon
Highlights are by far our most popular hair colour service. They can add dimension, depth, brightness, lightness, softness and much more. Highlights don’t always need to look the same and with a choice of colours, foil placement and versatility, you won’t be short of options. However, when thinking about highlights, many women consider just how much highlights can lighten hair with a common question being ‘how light can I go?’. In our daily blog, we explore the possibilities, what a Stylist might consider when lightening your hair and when and why certain colours can and just as importantly can’t be achieved.
For more information about our highlights, visit our highlights service page. Finally, if you’re new to the salon and not sure how to get the most value from your next appointment, need a consultation or would value a conversation before booking, call or send a WhatsApp message on 01235 534705.
Lightening hair with highlights FAQ's
How much will highlights lighten my hair?
When you arrive at a salon, whether it’s with ourselves or any salon externally they should discuss with you in the form of a consultation what you hope to achieve. If your primary concern is the degree to which highlights can lighten then your Stylist may walk through the considerations as to how achievable that is. A Stylist will initially consider your natural hair colour, what your hair looks like, how it feels, whether it’s healthy, your budget, what you want it to look like (for example soft highlights) and how you can achieve lightness whilst considering the possible contrast therefore frequency of booking.
Every client is different. Surprisingly, most clients require something different and it’s rare that even a busy salon will deliver the same hair colour with the same starting point with any form of regularity. So to de-myth that highlights are just simply ‘highlights’, they’re not. They do require some planning and as such appointments times will vary so one persons highlights may take one hour to apply, another persons may take two. For example, a client with naturally lighter hair, such as blonde or light brown, highlights can create a bright, sun-kissed effect. On darker hair, it may be possible however there could be limitations which may not achieve quite such a dramatic result. The extent of lightening is ultimately a decision made between you and your stylist, tailored to your desired look, the health of your hair and your anticipated budget. If you want to be much lighter, here’s how you can achieve a white blonde colour.
What impacts hair going lighter with highlights?
Achieving lighter highlights involves a balance of technique, starting point, hair colour, timing and hair health (so not much, then!). However the biggest contributing factor if any is your starting point. Virgin hair, which has not been previously coloured or chemically treated, is a huge plus point and typically is much easier to achieve a lighter and more consistent overall result.
When lightening hair, bleach is used to lighten hair. Bleach can be left on for ‘up to’ one hour however in some cases one hour is neither required nor appropriate. This isn’t something ever left to a client and your stylist will assess the condition of your hair to determine before the appointment has commenced whilst continuing to review as your hair lightens across the appointment.
Finally, tone is also very important. For example a ‘white blonde’ is a particularly challenging colour to achieve and therefore a more precise approach is required and in most cases more time is required to achieve this shade given its increased complexity.
If I have colour on my hair, is that an issue?
Existing hair colour on your hair can complicate the highlighting process, by virtue it places a barrier to certain shades. It’s by no means an insurmountable challenge however it may necessitate additional appointments or steps in order to achieve your desired result.
The best way to describing how bleaching hair works is that hair lightens far more efficiently on virgin hair. When working with hair that has been coloured, the bleach has one hour to work through your artificial colour on top of your natural hair. In many cases, clients have applied hair colour on top of multiple colours so hair will prove resistant to bleach. In such an instance your stylist will be your guide; there is no telling how your hair will respond however a patient approach is strongly advised if you do intend to proceed with going for a lighter colour. Multiple colouring sessions may however be required to achieve your desired colour. If you have tried to bleach your hair at home and it’s turned orange, here’s why!
Can I go any colour with highlights?
In theory, any colour is possible. The consideration for you and your stylist is how practical those steps are in-line with your budget, availability and up-keep. The process in most cases is tailored to you, so if a friend or someone you have seen has nice hair, the steps to achieve that same colour will most likely differ if that same colour or effect is achieved on your own hair. For example if your hair is a dark brown, a bright blonde may require two appointments, yet there could be a second possibility which could prove more effective and cost-efficient. Our role is to work through these options to cater to your brief as close as possible.
Conclusion
Highlights are our most popular service however the degree of lightening depends on factors such as your natural colour, hair history, and desired colour. So whether you’re hoping for soft, sun-kissed hair or you just want to be as light as possible, working with a stylist to bring your vision to life is very supportive. If you’re not ready to make the leap to being very light, a t-section can be a great first step to getting used to being lighter.
Finally, if you are feeling lost in what could work best for you, leave it to us. Our consultations work through any question you might have, logistics and we too make recommendations based upon your lifestyle and hair type.
