What is hard water?

Hard water is water with a high mineral content, mainly calcium and magnesium, picked up as rainwater filters through chalk and limestone. You’ll already know the signs around the house: limescale on the kettle, cloudy glasses and soap that never quite lathers. That’s a hair-quality issue rather than true hair loss from the root, and it’s very treatable.

How to tell if hard water is the problem.

A few tell-tale signs point to hard water rather than your products or your colourist: hair that feels rough or filmy even straight after washing, shampoo that struggles to lather, colour that fades noticeably faster than it used to, blonde that turns warm and dull between appointments, and limescale elsewhere in your home. If several of these ring true, the good news is that the effects are very fixable.

How to protect your hair from hard water.

You can’t easily change the water from your taps, but you can limit the damage. A weekly or fortnightly clarifying or chelating shampoo lifts out the mineral build-up that ordinary shampoo leaves behind — chelating formulas are specifically designed to bind to and remove metals like calcium and copper — just don’t overuse them, as they can be drying, especially on coloured hair. Follow with a rich moisturising mask to restore what hard water strips away and re-smooth the cuticle. A filter fitted to your showerhead reduces the mineral content before it ever reaches your hair and is one of the more effective long-term fixes, and a final cool rinse helps seal the cuticle and boost shine.
