How long do Keratin Treatments last?

The Wisteria Avenue Journal

Hair smoothing in Abingdon, Oxfordshire.

If you’ve booked, or you’re thinking about booking, a keratin smoothing treatment, the question you really want answered is a practical one: how long will it actually last? We fit smoothing treatments for clients across Abingdon and Oxfordshire who are tired of fighting frizz and long blow-dries, and the honest answer is “it depends — but there’s a great deal you can do to make it last.” Here’s the realistic picture, and the aftercare that makes the difference.

This is about longevity and looking after your treatment. If you’re still deciding whether it’s right for you at all, our guide to the pros and cons of keratin is the better place to start.

How long it really lasts.

As a general rule, a professional keratin smoothing treatment lasts somewhere in the region of three to five months — and it doesn’t fall off a cliff at the end. Instead it fades gradually, so your hair slowly returns to its natural texture rather than switching back overnight. Where you land in that range depends on your natural hair type and how coarse or frizzy it is to begin with, how often you wash it, the products you use, and how much heat and humidity your hair meets day to day. Two people can have the same treatment on the same morning and get quite different mileage from it, which is why aftercare matters as much as the treatment itself.

Why we consult first.

Smoothing isn’t one-size-fits-all, so we like to see your hair before booking you in — to check its condition, understand your routine, and make sure the treatment will actually give you what you want. It’s also the moment to plan around any colour, so the two work together rather than against each other. Book a consultation and we’ll talk it through honestly.

The first 48 hours.

The day of your treatment and the two that follow matter most, because the treatment is still settling into the hair. During this window, keep hair completely dry — no washing, no rain, no gym sweat if you can help it — and avoid tying it up, clipping it or tucking it behind your ears, as kinks can set in. Straighteners and tight styles are best left alone entirely. Getting this short window right genuinely changes how long the treatment holds, so it’s worth booking your appointment for a stretch when you can be a little careful.

Everyday aftercare that makes it last.

After the first couple of days, a few simple habits protect your investment. A sulphate-free shampoo is the single most useful change you can make, because sulphates strip the treatment out faster than anything else. Washing less often helps too, since every wash gently wears it down, so stretching the time between washes stretches its life. You’ll need far less heat styling now — which is rather the point — and if you swim, rinse and protect your hair first, because chlorine and salt water are hard on a smoothing treatment. None of this is difficult, but it’s the difference between three months and five.

The honest bit.

If your treatment seems to be fading fast, the usual culprits are a sulphate shampoo slipping back into the routine, very frequent washing, hard swimming sessions or a lot of humidity — all fixable, and we’re always happy to check your routine. Because keratin fades gradually, there’s no hard deadline to rebook, but most clients like to come back before the frizz fully returns, often around the three to four month mark, so their hair stays consistently smooth rather than riding a rollercoaster back to square one.

What does a smoothing treatment cost?

Price depends on your hair’s length and thickness, since both change how much product and time the treatment takes, so we confirm it at your consultation. Our full price list gives context for our smoothing and wider services.
