How to use purple shampoo without turning your hair grey.
Purple shampoo is one of the most useful products a blonde can own, and also one of the most misused. Used well, it keeps your colour bright, clean and cool between salon visits. Used badly, it can leave your hair looking dull, grey or even faintly lilac. As a salon that lightens a lot of hair for clients across Abingdon and Oxfordshire, we get asked about it constantly, so here’s exactly how to use it properly.
What does purple shampoo actually do?
The science is simple and it comes down to the colour wheel. Purple sits directly opposite yellow, which means it cancels yellow out. Blonde, silver, grey and highlighted hair naturally drifts towards warm yellow or golden tones as your colour fades and oxidises. A purple-pigmented shampoo deposits a tiny amount of violet toner onto the hair, neutralising that yellow and making your blonde look cleaner and cooler. It’s essentially a gentle, at-home top-up of the toning we do in the salon — not a substitute for a professional toner, and it won’t lighten your hair or fix orange tones on its own.
Who should use it?
Purple shampoo works best on blonde and highlighted hair that goes warm or yellow between appointments, on silver and natural grey hair that can look dingy, and on platinum, white blonde and cool-toned balayage. If your hair is dark, warm by design, or you actually like your golden tones, you probably don’t need it. And if your issue is orange rather than yellow, purple is the wrong colour entirely — you may need a blue shampoo or a proper salon toner instead. Understanding what brassy hair means will help you tell the difference.
How to use purple shampoo, step by step.
Apply it to wet hair the same way you would any shampoo, working it through from roots to ends and concentrating on the areas that go warmest — usually the mid-lengths, ends and around the face. Take a moment to distribute it evenly with your fingers or a wide-tooth comb, because uneven application is what causes patchy toning or the occasional purple streak. Then time it carefully: leave it on for the time recommended on the bottle, usually two to five minutes for a gentle formula. The longer it sits, the more pigment deposits, so start with less time than you think you need. Rinse thoroughly and always follow with a conditioner or mask, as toning shampoos can be a little drying.
How often should you use it?
For most people, once or twice a week is plenty. Using it every single wash is the single most common mistake we see, and it’s what causes hair to go flat, grey or over-toned. A good rule of thumb is to use it often enough to hold the brassiness at bay, and reach for a gentle, colour-safe shampoo the rest of the time. If your hair starts looking dull or ashy, cut right back. If it’s creeping yellow again, use it a little more often. Every head of hair is different, so it’s a balancing act you’ll fine-tune over a few weeks.
How to avoid a grey or purple tinge.
That dreaded grey or lilac cast almost always comes down to overuse. To stay safe, don’t leave it on too long, don’t use it every wash, and rinse well so no residue is left behind to keep depositing colour. Choose the right strength for your hair — some professional purple shampoos are highly pigmented and meant for occasional use only — and be extra gentle on very pale hair, as platinum and white blonde grab pigment fastest. If you do overdo it, don’t panic: a couple of normal, clarifying washes will usually lift the excess back out over a day or two.
Purple shampoo, conditioner or mask — what’s the difference?
They all do the same job of depositing violet pigment to neutralise yellow, but they suit different needs. Purple shampoo is the workhorse for regular toning as you wash. A purple conditioner adds a gentler dose of pigment with more moisture, which is handy if your hair is dry or you find shampoo alone a little harsh. A purple mask is the most intensive option, usually left on for longer and used less often — ideal for a bigger tone-up every couple of weeks. For most clients, a purple shampoo plus a normal moisturising conditioner is all they need; only reach for the mask if your hair is turning warm quickly and you want a stronger reset.
A few common mistakes to avoid.
Beyond overuse, watch out for applying it only to the roots when it’s usually the mid-lengths and ends that go brassiest, and for skipping conditioner afterwards and wondering why your hair feels dry. Cold or lukewarm water on the final rinse is kinder to toned hair than very hot water, which lifts the cuticle and lets tone escape faster. And remember that no home product can rescue truly uneven or orange-toned colour — that’s exactly what a salon toner is for.
Purple shampoo is maintenance, not a colour service.
It’s brilliant for stretching the time between appointments and keeping your blonde looking salon-fresh, but it works best alongside professional colour rather than instead of it. If your blonde needs genuine brightening, a tone correction or an icier finish, that’s a job for the salon.
