Curly Haircuts in Abingdon
Curly hair is a blessing that presents many challenges when it comes to establishing the right haircut and styling techniques. Whether you have loose waves, tight ringlets, or something in between, the key to getting the best haircut hinges on knowing what works for your curl type and even more importantly, your Stylist knowing. Communication therefore plays a pivotal role and where most Stylists and salons aren’t able to specialise in curly hair, this can make cutting and colouring curly hair much more challenging. In our daly blog, we combine frequently asked questions alongside helping advice from curly hair specialists to help you get the most out of your next curly hair salon visit. If you want to learn more about our curly hair appointments, visit our curly hair service page.
Finally, if you’re new to the salon and not sure how to get the most value from your next appointment, need a consultation or would value a conversation before booking, call or send a WhatsApp message on 01235 534705.
Where to get curly haircuts FAQ's
Where can I find a curly hair salon?
A quick Google search within Oxfordshire displays the nearest salon locations for curly haircuts as Reading followed by Swindon and latterly London. Wisteria Avenue appears to be one of the few salons locally able to deliver curly haircuts in Oxfordshire.
The importance of communication
Communication with any hair type is really important, however it is increasingly vital when cutting curly hair. One of the most common struggles for those with curly hair is leaving the salon with a haircut they didn’t want or ask for. This usually happens because of a lack of communication between the client and the stylist in successfully articulating what certain styles can achieve. specifically with curly hair, any slight change can make a big difference. Your Stylist when consulting with you should clearly express the shape, length that they recommend would work best for you and how those changes might benefit your curly hair. In addition if you are a client with curly hair and you have something that you want, don’t be afraid to use your hands to demonstrate the exact length, shape and volume you want, as showing your stylist is sometimes more effective than using an image of someone else’s hair which may showcase different things. If one of your bug bears is leaving an appointment and you haven’t asked how to tackle frizz, here’s some help!
Wet vs. Dry Cutting
It’s very common that we are asked whether we cut curly hair wet or dry. It’s about 50-50; many clients swear by each and are loyal to their cutting method of choice! It’s therefore safe to assume that there is a lot of debate in the curly hair community about whether it’s better to have curls cut dry or wet. The real answer is that it depends on you! Most salons will exclusively do one or the other (every client on dry hair or every client on wet hair). In our experience, when it comes to curly hair there isn’t a typical process for a cutting appointment, rather the process that better favours a curly hair appointment wins. For example, if a wet cut will achieve a better outcome relating to shape, style whilst favouring the curl pattern for client ‘A’, there is no reason to cut the hair dry (and vice versa). Curly hair is different than other hair types. Here are some key reasons why curly hair is different.
Should I add layers to my curly hair?
Before answering whether layers should be added to your next curly haircut, it’s worth explaining explaining exactly what layers are and what they do. Layers add different lengths to the hair (rather than your hair all falling to the same point, also known as a one length haircut). The idea behind layers being that they enhance volume, create shape and prevent a ‘triangle effect’ where your hair looks too flat.
When it comes to introducing layers into curly hair, the idea is much the same. A one length haircut on curly hair can look flat around the face and by introducing layers it can add bounce to tighter curls, while longer layers work better for wavy or loose curls to maintain fullness without losing too much length. It’s worth noting that for curly hair appointments it’s ideal that your Stylist can see your curls in their natural form. Should you wash your hair before a curly haircut?
Finding the right stylist
More than 95% of hair salons don’t offer a curly haircut service. Finding the right stylist for you is therefore not easy unless you are happy with a non-specific curly salon or seek to travel outside of the area. Whilst not all trained to cut curly hair, Wisteria Avenue has a team curly hair stylists experienced in cutting curly hair that can make all the difference. Most salons won’t offer this service given that most stylists are not trained in this area, however if you aren’t close to Oxfordshire and need to find someone in your area, rather than focusing solely on finding a ‘curl specialist’, look for a stylist known for their cutting expertise and experience with different hair textures.
Aftercare - Using curly hair products
Once you’ve got the perfect cut, maintaining it is crucial. Curly hair tends to be drier than straight hair because natural oils from the scalp struggle to reach the ends leaving curly hair feeling much drier and in some cases frizzy. The fundamental requirement of curly hair is moisture of some description. If you are struggling with products and require support with targeting frizz then there is an in-salon alternative called pHrizzy-o-therapy.
We take advantage of Only Curls, our range of in-salon specialist curly hair products. If you need support at your next appointment, don’t hesitate to ask. Here are some curly hair tips you can use at home.
Conclusion
Cutting and styling curly hair isn’t easy, in-fact most Stylists struggle with curly hair so you certainly aren’t alone! Don’t be afraid to ask questions; communication is really key if you want to maximise your next curly hair appointment. We will show you what can work and how to manage your hair at home, though if you have questions that you feel will benefit you, questions are key.
