Top Tips: How to Tame Frizzy Hair

Frizzy hair can be a real frustration — you wake up to it, a new product triggers it, or you simply got caught in the rain without an umbrella. Whatever the cause, lots of us deal with frizz and the last-minute scramble to calm it down. The good news is there’s plenty you can do. Here are our top tips for frizz-free hair, from the team at Wisteria Avenue in Abingdon.

Tip 1: Check your shampoo’s ingredients

What’s in your shampoo genuinely matters for frizz. One ingredient worth looking for is glycerin (also called glycerol) — a colourless, odourless, non-toxic ingredient that’s excellent at moisturising hair. It’s used in skincare and even wound care for its hydrating properties, and shampoos with a good concentration of it are great for re-hydrating frizzy, dried-out hair. Our JOICO Moisture Recovery range, available in the salon, is formulated with this kind of hydration in mind.

Tip 2: Don’t skip conditioner

A lot of people skip conditioner simply because it feels like a faff — but for frizzy hair it’s not optional. Two-in-one shampoos won’t do the job properly; it’s worth investing in a proper conditioner and giving it the time it needs. One useful tip: keep moisturising conditioner away from the root area — applied at the roots it just makes them oily, which is a whole different problem. Concentrate it through the mid-lengths and ends where frizz actually lives.

Tip 3: Consider a salon treatment

A professional treatment makes a real difference to frizz-prone hair. At Wisteria Avenue we offer a hair repair treatment that genuinely transforms how unruly hair behaves — and while you can’t fully replicate it at home, it’s reasonably cost-effective and leaves hair in great shape. Used regularly, treatments gradually “train” frizzy hair to behave. If frizz is a persistent problem, it’s also worth asking about smoothing treatments, which tackle it at a deeper level. Our guide to what hair treatments do explains the options.

Tip 4: Put the hair dryer down

This is the hardest tip to follow but one of the most effective. Reaching straight for the hair dryer on soaking-wet hair is a fast route to a frizz-ball. Give your hair some breathing space and let it dry naturally for a while — once it’s only mildly damp to the touch, *then* you can use the dryer. This minimises heat damage and limits how long your hair is exposed to frizz-causing moisture. When you do dry it, use a lower heat setting and hold the dryer at a distance rather than close to the hair.
