Curly Haircuts in Abingdon
We do a lot of curly haircuts at Wisteria Avenue. In 2024 it’s so far our second most popular service with one in every three clients having curly hair! If you have curly hair, you’ll know that finding a salon or stylist who truly understands your hair type and texture won’t be easy. Curly hair is different and requires specific care and a different approach than straighter hair.
We are regularly asked by curly hair clients whether it’s best practise to wash hair before a curly haircut or not? The short answer is it’s really helpful for your Stylist to see your hairs natural curl pattern, how it sits, what it looks like and how your Stylist can help to improve your hair before washing. In our latest daily blog, our Stylists will explore the reasons why in some cases it’s helpful to wash your hair before a curly haircut yet in most scenarios it’s not best practice. We also walk through how you can get the most from your curly haircut.
If you are looking for a new haircut and need styling and maintenance advice for your hair, visit our ladies curly haircut and mens curly haircut service page.
Finally, if you’re new to the salon and not sure how to get the most value from your next hair appointment, particularly if you need help with short haircuts, call or send a WhatsApp message on 01235 534705.
Washing before a curly haircut FAQ's
Is it important for your Stylist to see your natural curls?
In short, your Stylist seeing your hair in its most natural form gets them seeing it through your eyes. Through experience of seeing lots of clients with similar hair, they can recognise and resonate better whilst making suggestions which have worked for others. It’s worth mentioning that when it comes to curly hair, no two heads are the same with curls varying from person-to-person. In most cases, arriving at your appointment with your curls as you normally wear your hair, you’re giving your stylist a full picture of how your curls fall, what impact that has (positively or negatively) whilst allowing your Stylist to interpret your curls better. There are two main focuses for your Stylist to be aware of:
Assessing your hair texture: Curly hair can range from loose waves to tight coils, and each curl type behaves differently. If recently washed, your curls may not sit as they normally do and therefore your Stylist may misinterpret when communication what you like or dislike about your hair. Seeing your natural texture allows your stylist to assess your hair more objectively. For example, tighter curls may require a dry cut, where the stylist cuts each curl individually to avoid disrupting the pattern. Meanwhile, looser waves might be better suited to a wet cut for a more blended finish.
Understanding your curl pattern: Your stylist needs to see how your curls behave in their most natural state. This will better assist your Stylist to ask relevant questions and to inspire how they cut your curly hair. Further, this will help to determine which areas might need more shaping, where your curls have natural volume, and where they tend to lose their shape.
Should you wash your hair before your appointment?
Now that we understand the importance of showing your natural curls, the question arises: Should you wash your hair before your curly haircut?
When should you wash your curly hair before: This is largely a combination of personal preference and how unruly your hair will prove to your Stylist. Curly haircut appointments can really vary with the average being one hour. However for much longer, thicker and unruly hair, if it’s difficult for you to wash and detangle, it’s likely that your Stylist will encounter similar. If you are happy for your Stylist to extend your appointment, usually they will be happy to do so. However in many cases, the time spent on detangling could be better used for cutting and shaping your hair, meaning a more efficient session for both you and your stylist.
Downsides to washing your curly hair in advance: Aside from the above, washing your hair just before your appointment can have some drawbacks and in our experience if not diffused beforehand, this can potentially mislead your Stylist in terms of hair your hair sits, its texture and what your previous haircut looks like.
Additionally, if your hair isn’t especially prone to tangling, washing beforehand won’t be necessary. This is primarily in more extreme cases which are quite rare. We offer a wash as part of the service, so you can arrive with your hair in its natural state and allow your stylist to wash it in the salon if needed. This way, we can start the cutting process after assessing your natural curl pattern.
What do you need to consider before your curly haircut?
Your stylist is your most valuable resource for helping you make the most of your curls. Whether it’s through product knowledge, teaching you how to use a diffuser more effectively, curly hair tips and tricks or working with you to achieve a better haircut, there a lots of things you can do to work with your Stylist. Here’s three things you need for curly hair.
The trick is to ask questions. The likelihood is that they will have seen hundreds of clients with ranging difficulties or they may have a top-tip for you which could make you feel very different about your hair. Whilst each appointment does carry with it a consultation, if ever you are unsure just call ahead before your appointment/before booking on 01235 534705 or send a WhatsApp message to the same number.
cONCLUSION
Whether to wash your hair before a curly haircut depends on your hair type and how your curls behave. For most clients, it’s best practice to arrive with your hair in its natural form so your stylist can assess your texture, curl pattern, and how your haircut sits. The only common scenario where you may want to consider helping your Stylist is where your hair is particularly prone to tangling and there is a chance that your Stylist may struggle to accommodate if your appointment is only one hour.
If you’re in Oxfordshire and struggling to find a Stylist who really understands curly hair, we would love for the opportunity to take a look to see where we can add value. Whether it’s through a haircut, product recommendations, or some simple tips on using a diffuser/styling, we’re here to help you enjoy every curl!
