Three things you need for curly hair in Abingdon?

Curly hair is unique, standout and can be styled beautifully with the right management. However if you are less experienced in managing your curls, they can feel like a burden and therefore unloved. Many of us with curls in Oxfordshire find themselves unsure of what products and tools to use or how to care for their curls without spending a fortune. However their is good news! With some basic essentials, you can take your curls to the next level without much investment and with a small time investment.

In tour latest daily blog, we’ll discuss the top three key things you need to look after your curly hair: a diffuser, a moisture-intensive curl product, and (at the very least) four haircuts annually. We’ll cover why all three are the most important non-negotiables, how you can benefit from each whilst supporting your your curls.

If you are looking for a new haircut and need styling and maintenance advice for your curly hair, visit our curly hair service page.

Finally, if you’re new to the salon and not sure how to get the most value from your next hair appointment, call or send a WhatsApp message on 01235 534705.

what do you need for curly hair FAQ's

1. Buy a diffuser. Why?

A diffuser is the absolute number one must have for anyone with curly hair. A diffuser is an attachment for your hairdryer that fits on the end. Most as universal meaning they will fit to most hairdryers, however it’s worth double checking before purchasing as on occasion they won’t. A diffuser is designed to spread the flow of air over a wider area allowing you to dry your curly hair without disrupting the curl pattern and thus creating frizz! What’s more, diffusers are cheap. You can purchase these from Amazon for under £10.

How to Use a Diffuser:

  • To get the best results, apply your desired curl product to damp hair. Then, using the diffuser on a low heat and low-speed setting, cup sections of your hair with the diffuser and gently lift towards the scalp. Hold it in place for a few seconds before moving on to another section. This method enhances natural curls while minimising frizz. If done correctly you’ll be surprised how curly your curls can be!

2. A moisture intensive curl product. Why?

Curly hair is different. A strong characteristic of curly hair tends to be drier/more coarse when compared to straight hair because the natural oils from the scalp have a harder time travelling down the hair shaft. This translates as curls being much drier and as a result the introduction of moisture intensive product become much more of an essential part of most peoples curly hair care routine. On the flip-side, curls that are starved of enough hydration can become dry, frizzy, and difficult to manage.

Our in-salon range of curly hair products are Only Curls, a curly hair specific product range. The common theme of each product is that they are moisture intensive in some description. The target might be volume, hold, a leave-in product or similar, they all share similarities. Whether you use a curl cream, gel, or mousse, the key is to ensure your hair stays hydrated ensuring the enhancement of your curls whilst minimising frizz. Here are some entry-level options to get you started:

  • Curl Cremes: Ideal for enhancing natural curls and providing lightweight moisture. Cremes are ideal for a natural look.
  • Curl Gels: Help hold curls in place, offering more structure.
  • Curl Mousse: Adds volume and bounce while helping to shape your curls.

3. A regular haircut! Why?

You’re probably rolling your eyes but cutting curly hair is different. Haircuts are its benefits are normally misunderstood. While it might seem like an unnecessary chore or a costly expense, rethinking your relationship with haircuts is important. Hair grows (on average) 0.5 inches every four weeks. Hair typically begins to split within this timeframe therefore before the split travels ‘up’ there is a window of opportunity. A worst case scenario is three months (whereby we’ve achieved 1.5 inches or growth, addressing 0.5 inches and you’ve gained an inch. This will enable you to support your healthy curls whilst achieving thicker and fuller hair from root to end rather than thicker hair at the root and finer/split hair at the ends. If you want any tips for curly haircuts, you can thank us later! The easiest structure to work to is once seasonally; spring, summer, autumn and winter.

  • Best case: Every 6-8 weeks for optimal health of your curls.
  • Minimum: Every 3 months (four times a year) to maintain the health of your curls and avoid split ends.

Conclusion - Maximising your curly hair routine

Looking after curly hair can be fundamentally straightforward. Our top three things for curly hair are your bare essentials; a diffuser, a moisture-intensive product, and a regular haircuts ensuring you can keep your curls healthy and in-check.

Whether you’re new to caring for your curls or whether you have some firsthand experience of managing your curl pattern, these basics will help you maintain your natural texture while keeping costs to a minimum.

If you are unsure about what your curly hair routine should be, what to use or need further help, call or send a WhatsApp message on 01235 534705.
