Pompadour Haircuts in Abingdon
The names of haircuts can feel overwhelming and a quick Google search shows the ‘pompadour’ as one of the top search results, but what is it? In the real world you likely see men sporting a pompadour daily and not only that but it’s a haircut which has spanned generations as far back as the 1950’s with its earliest inception of a slicked back look and in more modern times typically associated with faded back and sides and longer on top (think present day David Beckham). In our daily blog we cover what a pompadour is, how to style it, how you can ask for it and even how to pronounce ‘pompadour!’.
If you are considering something different, our gents haircutting service page can help. Finally, if you’re new to the salon and not sure how to get the most value from your next appointment, need a consultation or would value a conversation before booking, call or send a WhatsApp message on 01235 534705.
Pompadour Haircut FAQ's
What is a pompadour haircut?
Pompadour (which is pronounced ‘pom-puh-dor’) is popular type of haircut often requested by men seeking a shorter style on the sides and lots of volume on top that allows for ease of maintenance on the sides yet scope for (in most cases) combing the top with the most volume back towards your neck. This style is often associated with a disconnect between the shorter sides and the top. The sides can adopt a skin fade, more traditional fade or be tapered, allowing the focus to remain on the fuller crown for styling purposes. Over the years the pompadour has evolved yet the class is still much loved and the best thing about the style is that it can be tailored to suit a variety of different hair textures, lengths, styling preferences and anticipated ongoing maintenance. While the classic version is still loved, modern takes on the pompadour have evolved to suit a variety of textures, lengths, and preferences. Moreover the pompadour can be tailored to suit your look whether it be for work (if you’re client-facing and need something which isn’t going to cause friction) it can look very professional whereas if you seek a statement haircut, it can be cut to be styled in an edgier way with both a more pronounced disconnect and greater length on top with shorter sides.
How should I ask for a pompadour haircut?
Whether you are visiting a barbershop or a hair salon, the best thing to do is to bring a picture. For many, visiting a salon for the first time or trying to ask or describe what you are looking for can feel intimidating. If you are feeling uneasy, it’s worth noting that most barbers or Stylists will welcome your preparation! When your Stylist is uncertain about what you would like, fact-finding (if you aren’t able to communication your ideas concisely) can lead to a lack of understanding on their part. For this reason the best and most advantageous place to start is a picture and a verbal reference to the type of haircut you seek (in this case a ‘pompadour’).
It’s too worth noting that most experienced stylists will immediately understand what you’re referring to (some may know it was something else) however understand what appeals can prove very useful. Once your Stylist understands your ideal look, during the consultation a more experience Stylist will help you to weigh up your styling habits, lifestyle, what could work for your face shape and critically how much you can get from your haircut (and even discuss another option if there is a better alternative!).
Is a pompadour haircut popular?
The pompadour isn’t the single most popular men’s haircut, however it is a timeless classic that has evolved over the years. As of writing, it’s been in circulation for roughly 75 years and shows no sign of going any time soon, particularly given the haircut has been adopted by musicians, footballers, actors, media personalities and business professionals in varying degrees. It’s a versatile haircut that can be anything from professional to edgy to conservative dependent upon your desired look and style.
The pompadour has managed to stand the test of time for good reason. Arguably the most famous pompadour was worn by Elvis and James Dean, way back however in more recent times David Beckham (arguably at one point one of the most famous men on the planet), Justin Timberlake, Zac Efron and more have at one point in time sported a pompadour haircut. So whether neatly styled for a formal meeting/occasion or cut and styled to suit every day needs, it’s a popular choice for many men and something which is under-appreciated, for men across a range of age groups too.
How should I style a pompadour haircut?
In most cases the pompadour is back combed and there are many ways to achieve this look and this is largely dependent upon your anticipated look. For volume (and this many take practice), once washed and towel-dried, apply a product (a volumising mousse can work well) ensuring complete coverage (and only a small amount is required). We tend to use both a hairdryer and barrel brush in salon to ‘guide’ the hair upwards and back as you are drying. It’s too worth mentioning that if you are booking a pompadour, whilst not all will, Stylists will generally show you how you can style it using this method or any other dependent upon your chosen look.
For a more ‘fixed’ look, on dry hair matte clays, pomade’s or styling creams when combed front to back can work well for a more sleek/fixed look. A comb can be used to create a clean, smooth finish, or you can use your fingers for a looser, more relaxed look. You may also choose to use hair spray however it’s not essential. Many people choose not to as washing and maintaining hair medium term can prove more problematic.
It’s worth noting that given the shorter sides, it’s worth considering the speed at which hair grows when booking your next pompadour appointment.
Conclusion
The pompadour is the classic throwback with a modern day feel. It’s a stylist choice among many and if you have the right amount of length on top, it’s a haircut that many more could consider. Moreover, if you are looking for a haircut that is a throwback (without the modern day feel), the haircut does have the ability to feel rock ‘n’ roll if you are inspired by haircuts dating back as early as the 50’s. That being said make no mistake; this is a very fashionable haircut and that is proven given it’s sported by many that you see both in every day life, in the media, by well-loved personalities and by those of all age groups.
