Removing or stripping hair colour in Abingdon
Changing your hair colour can be an exciting transformation, but sometimes, the result isn’t quite what you expected and in most cases the transformation has taken place at home and the outcome isn’t quite what was expected. So whether your hair has gone too dark, you’ve opted for the wrong shade and it’s not as you anticipated and just want to return to your natural colour or something more akin to your original desired shade, there are options. Many people wonder whether they can strip hair colour at home or if visiting a salon is the best option.
In our daily blog, we’ll ask our Stylists the options which are available to you as a client and how you can remove unwanted hair colours as efficiently as possible. This includes the pros and the more obvious downsides from shop-bought hair colour strippers to bleach baths and what the best method is for achieving a successful result.
If you are considering something different, we would love to hear from you. Finally, if you’re new to the salon and not sure how to get the most value from your next appointment, need a consultation or would value a conversation before booking, call or send a WhatsApp message on 01235 534705.

Removing and stripping hair colour FAQ's
What are the options for removing hair colour?
There are several methods for stripping or removing hair colour build up and this can also extend to your budget and anticipated result. The gentlest and slowest option which is unlikely to influence your hairs condition is to use a clarifying shampoo. Clarifying shampoo’s generally aren’t to be used with any level of frequency, however for the purposes of removing hair colour build up, it will help (although it won’t completely remove the colour and in many cases will only take away some of the ‘edge). This can prove somewhat effective for new colours, in particular semi-permanent shades.
The second option which is used most frequency are ‘hair colour strippers’. These can be purchased from most high street stores which sell hair colours (think supermarkets, Boots, convenience stores etc). These products typically work by breaking down artificial hair colour molecules. The upside is their cost-efficiency and ease of purchase.
The third most popular choice is a bleach bath and this is undertaken in-salon. It sounds scary however incidentally the bleach used is incredibly weak. It produces far less strength than bleach used when highlighting or balayaging hair and the formula is a diluted form of bleaching which comprises bleach, a weak developer and shampoo and this can offer the best of both worlds tackling hair colour in a means which will manage the overall condition of hair whilst achieving a desired end result. It is worth noting that this option should only ever be attempted in the confines of a salon with a trained professional.
Will shop-bought hair colour strippers cause damage?
The short answer is in most cases, yes. Shop-bought colour removers are appealing due to their accessibility and attraction to being able to apply at home. These colour strippers can work for mild to moderate colour removal, but they have limitations. These removers can help lift fresh or semi-permanent dye and they appeal to mass market however in doing so they are effective for all hair types and assessing suitability can cause issues upon application. In many cases if your intention is to remove deep or multiple applications of colour, this can too cause issues as can leaving the product on for too long.
In-salon we infrequently see clients that have used colour strippers and given their formulation contains strong chemicals, these can quickly dry out the hair and results can often be unpredictable. There is also an assumption that removers simply remove the recently applied hair colour only and therefore leaving the original hair colour. In reality, they remove everything and the result result is unlikely to be balanced and a multitude of brassy and undesirable shades.
Can you remove hair colour in a salon?
You might be familiar with the term ‘colour correction’. This is a salon term for removing colour build up, restoring a hair colour or transitioning from one hair colour type to another. Here’s an example of a balayage transformation (going from one colour to another). In the eyes of many, the option of an in-salon service this is the most complete option, best practice and the choice that will resolve issues surrounding both colour and any deterioration of condition. The biggest difference being that salons have access to high-quality products, the experience and methods to resolve unwanted hair colour.
Salon colour correctional appointments begin with a consultation for a Stylist to access your current colour including your hair history, your budget, what you hope to achieve, any recommendations and questions that you might have. This enables a Stylist to explore all available options against your requirements to determine the most suited method of correction.
What is the safest way to remove hair colour?
In 99% of cases, salons will offer a more complete service that best caters to short, medium and longer term support considering all aspect of hair colour, hair health, future appointments and spend. One area which is really underserved is maintaining the integrity of hair and salons are really well equipped to support in this area. In any case any hair colour can be achieved, however if at any time it’s at the expense of your hair of health, this is a compromise which is unnecessary. If you are concerned by the condition of your hair, a cost-effective and highly attractive option is our four step treatment.
Conclusion
Stripping hair colour or removing hair colour build up isn’t easy. Doing this at home can escalate problems quickly and it’s more often more miss than hit. Even in salon many experienced Stylists are ill-equipped to tackle this sort of correctional service and it is considered highly specialised. The best approach is when considering the history of the hair, the condition and balancing this against your desired end result. Many results are outstanding and can be easy to maintain going forward. On the other hand while shop-bought colour removers may help in some cases, they often don’t provide a perfect finish nor are they effective at preserving the health of your hair.
If you are feeling lost in what could work best for you, leave it to us. Our consultations work through any question you might have, logistics and we too make recommendations based upon your lifestyle and hair type.
