The most popular perms in Abingdon
Perms right now are making a strong comeback. Last year more than 10% of our appointments were perms alone, making them a popular choice for men and women. Perms are a highly effective means to adding texture, volume and personality to your hair. Like everything in hairdressers, knowing the terminology, what to ask for and what could work for you can feel overwhelming! So with so many options available, it’s natural to consider which type of perm is the most popular and whether it’s the right choice for you.
For clients in Oxfordshire considering a perm, our latest daily blog will explore the versatility of modern fashion perms, their appeal, and why looser, more natural-looking styles are by far the leading the trend in the world of perms. We’ll also answer common questions about perming hair, from suitability for different hair types to how long fashion perms typically last.
For more information visit our perm service page. Finally, if you’re new to the salon and not sure how to get the most value from your next appointment, need a consultation or would value a conversation before booking, call or send a WhatsApp message on 01235 534705.

Popular Perm FAQ's
Can any hair type be permed?
The good news is that almost any hair type can be permed, provided it’s in healthy condition and this is a strong caveat. Whether you should or not is a secondary consideration. So in principle whether your hair is fine, thick, straight, or wavy, a skilled stylist can tailor the perming process to suit your unique texture and desired outcome. However you may find that certain hair types will be restricted in relation to curl pattern, longevity and overall look. For example, Asian hair is notoriously straight and thick therefore achieving a tighter curl is much less attainable than a looser curl. The most important consideration is the strength of hair and it’s essential to note that damaged or overly processed hair may not respond well to perming. For this reason an advance consultation with a professional stylist may likely identify a cause and seek to address any issues before looking to perm. Here’s some advice about perming bleached hair.
What are the most popular perms?
When it comes to modern day perming techniques, looser, more natural styles are by far the most popular choice among clients. If you are seeking inspiration, Google ‘beach waves‘ which are favoured for their natural soft curl pattern that offers lots of movement and versatility when it comes to styling. Our in-house beach waves offer a highly effective measure by adopting to curl types (using two different sized curl rods) for a more natural effective. The contrast looks great and last for longer; when you look at most peoples curly hair, it’s rare that curls are identical. Most people with looser curls find that their hair varies from tighter, slightly looser and even in some cases straighter pieces! So with a perm we try to replicate a similar curl pattern by using rods that can achieve a more natural feel. The two rods will allow your stylist to create a dimensional, natural look. This approach contrasts with traditional perms in the 80’s, where uniform curls were the norm.
Other popular options include body wave perms, which add gentle volume and texture, and digital perms which are more popular overseas. These take advantage of heat to create soft, defined curls. Spiral perms, while less common today, used to be very popular so if you are looking for a ‘throwback’, they are more dramatic and much more curly.
Why are looser perms more popular?
Looser perms are timeless. Theirs a subtle nod to perms of the past with a modern day feel. They don’t look out of place and they can be worn effortlessly! However looser perms are by far a modern fay favourite cause they mimic naturally wavy/curly hair so effectively whilst for clients with fine or flat hair, they introduce volume which opens new doors to styling.
These perms are known as ‘fashion perms’ or ‘fashionable perms’ and provide volume and movement without being overly dramatic, making them a subtle way to refresh your look. Conversely, tighter curls such as a spiral perm whilst they can still look great, achieve a different look and because they are more niche are less popular. Looser perms such as beach waves are ideal for clients who want to enhance their hair’s natural texture in a less dramatic way yet are still noticeable.
How long to fashion perms last for?
This question is the hardest to answer. Unlike hair colours, perms vary dependent on your starting point and the type of perm rather than your regrowth (which is largely the sole factor for predicting the life span of a hair colour). For example, thicker, longer and straighter hair is likely to weigh the hair down more than shorter and finer hair where gravity doesn’t play such an integral role. For this reason a perm on this hair type is likely to require intervention sooner than hair which is shoulder length. On average, fashion perms last between three to six months. Over time, the curls will gradually loosen as your hair grows and the perm relaxes.
The one controllable of course is hair growth. If we accept that on average hair grows approximately 0.5 inches per month, after three months there is an acceptance that you may need to consider another appointment. For gents perms, this might be sooner if hair is shorter. If you want to keep your perm looking and feeling great, the key to a healthy perm is moisture given that moisture doesn’t travel along curly hair in the same way that it does straight hair, masks and moisture intensive shampoo’s and conditioners can be highly effective.
Conclusion
Looser perms or beach waves as they are more commonly known by are by far the most popular choice for clients looking for a natural look curl. They offer clients versatility, ease of maintenance, and the ability to add volume and texture to much finer hair. The key to a successful beach wave is at least two curl types; one slightly bigger than the other to offer beautiful dimension.
