Men's Perm Appointments in Abingdon
Men’s perms are as popular as ever. This year we have seen substantially more men having perms of all shapes and sizes. Perms for men can add volume, create dimension and add texture to fine, flat or hair that needs a little something extra. If you are new to perms, you aren’t alone. The process is much more straightforward (and far less intimidating than you might think!). So whether you’re considering a perm for the first time or are planning your next appointment, we are here to support your choice and our role is that of a soundboard. We can introduce ideas, suggestions, plant seeds or work through ideas to understand how that may look, feasibility and to tailor it to work for you.
For men in Oxfordshire, our daily blog looks at men’s perms from suitability and styles to maintenance and hair health.
For more information about our our men’s perms, visit our men’s perm service page. Finally, if you’re new to the salon and not sure how to get the most value from your next appointment, need a consultation or would value a conversation before booking, call or send a WhatsApp message on 01235 534705.
Men's Perm FAQ's
What is a men's perm?
Men’s and women’s perms are much the same in terms of process, the differences usually lies in the length of hair and on occasion expected end result. In its simplest form, perm means ‘permanent wave’ which represents the change from straight to permanent curls with the perm altering the structure of your hair. Whereas traditional perms offer a fixed curl pattern throughout leaving an artificial appearance, most modern perms are all about achieving natural-looking texture and men’s perms are no different. While all perms differ in their goals (when taking into account face-shape, personal style, hair texture and lifestyle) the common denominator is a more natural looking curl pattern.
So whether you are looking for a looser beach wave or a more tighter curl, the size of rod (which lead to bigger or smaller curls) can be matched with tighter or looser curls, big or small (or even a mixture!). Your Stylist should be able to guide you on the ‘how’ and ‘what’.
How long does my hair need to be if I want to perm it?
It varies. Perm rods come in different sizes and these are used by your stylist to achieve your desired curl. The rods are used by your stylist to create a curl with small sections of your hair used to ‘wrap’ around the rod. The longer your hair, the easier to apply a rod, however certain lengths of hair won’t ‘wrap’ around the rod so we would encourage you to work with your Stylist who will be able to advise which looks and types of perm can be achieved.
As a point of reference, the bare minimum hair length is about two inches of growth from the root. That being said, it’s unlikely if your hair is two inches on top the it will be two inches throughout so you may want to consider making provisions for much much of your hair you want to curl and what sort of curls you look for. For example if it’s two inches on top, it won’t be across the sides and back of your hair so the length of your hair will play a significant role in determining whether a perm is feasible and which styles are achievable. While there’s no strict minimum length, most stylists recommend at least two inches of hair to ensure the curls or waves have enough room to be applied to a perm rod.
What are the best options for a perm?
There’s two answers; the most popular men’s perm is loose, textured and versatile perm that can be styled. This is commonly known as a ‘beach wave’ and the easiest way of achieving this natural look is to take advantage of a minimum of two types of perm rods (one slightly bigger than the other) which leaves hair with a more natural curl pattern with some curls bigger/smaller than others. The older and more traditional perms left identically sized tighter curls throughout the hair for a more artificial appearance, where as modern fashion perms deliver the opposite.
The second answer is that whilst 8/10 clients opt for something more natural, doesn’t automatically indicate that this is right for you, nor the obvious option. For some, the more obvious choice might be to achieve a more dramatic transformation, by way of the introduction of tighter curls. This is arguably much more standout and eye-catching, however it’s not necessarily the obvious choice for all. If you want to maximise your perm, here’s three things that could help your curly hair.
Will I need to cut my hair?
In most cases it’s advised. Foremost when perming your hair, there is a tendency that the very ends of your hair won’t take in the same way when your perm so trimming these regularly is advised. However more commonly, perms particularly can look ‘detached’ to blending the sides, cutting your hair to the curl can really add a lot to your curls.
It’s also worth noting medium-term that we would still advise regular haircuts. Curls tend to mask split ends more effectively than straight hair therefore whilst it can take longer to become visible, there is still emphasis to look after your hair. We specialise in curly hair so a curly men’s haircut can be highly supportive to your perm.
Will a perm damage my hair?
Perms won’t damage your hair unless used incorrectly, abused or applied and allowed to process for far too long. In most instances it’s black and white as to whether a perm should or shouldn’t be applied; the starting point matters. If your hair as been exposed to a lot of colour, bleach, aggressive chemical treatments and it feels particularly dry, not only is a perm likely not a good idea but one which is unlikely to take to a curl. Your stylist will be able to advise you of this well in advance of an appointment (we schedule advance consultations with perm bookings, so if you intend to book with us for the first time someone will touch base with you).
That being said, whilst damage is unlikely given the advance consultation we schedule mitigates any risk, your Stylist will advocate next steps, aftercare and ensuring that your hair remains in good health. In most cases whilst unnecessary there are some very effective curly hair specific products which not only serve to support any styling needs but many which offer moisture intensive masks, oils and conditioners. There are reasonably cost-efficient too.
Conclusion
Men’s perms offer something different and a transforming that can introduce volume, texture, curls or a loose wave with limited upkeep necessary. So whether you’re after soft waves or bold curls, there’s a perm to suit every taste and hair type.
If you are feeling lost in what could work best for you, leave it to us. Our consultations work through any question you might have, logistics and we too make recommendations based upon your lifestyle and hair type.
