What are root touch ups?

If you colour your hair, you’ll know the feeling. A few weeks after your appointment your colour looks great. A few weeks after that, less so. The regrowth starts to show, the contrast between your natural colour and your coloured hair becomes more visible, and what felt like fresh, intentional colour starts to look like something that needs attention.

A root touch up, also known as a tint is the practical, cost effective solution to exactly this problem. It’s one of the most commonly booked services at Wisteria Avenue and one that makes a significant difference to how your colour looks and feels between full appointments.

Root Touch Up FAQ's

What Is a Root Touch Up?

A root touch up is a targeted colour service designed to blend your natural regrowth back into your existing hair colour. Rather than applying colour across the whole head, which is what a full colour appointment involves, a root touch up focuses specifically on the regrowth area, typically the first few centimetres of hair closest to the scalp.

The result is colour that looks fresh and consistent from root to tip, without the time commitment or cost of a full appointment.

Who Is a Root Touch Up Suitable For?

Root touch ups are most commonly associated with clients who have an all over tint, where regrowth is most visible because the contrast between natural and coloured hair is sharpest. However they are also relevant for a wider range of clients than many people realise.

Tint clients. If you have an all over permanent colour, a root touch up every four to six weeks keeps the result looking consistent and prevents a visible line of demarcation developing between your natural and coloured hair.

Clients covering grey. For clients using colour to cover grey, regrowth is often the most visible and most frustrating issue. A root touch up addresses this directly, restoring the coverage and keeping the grey concealed between full appointments.

Highlighted and balayage clients. Root touch ups for highlighted or balayage hair are slightly different in nature. Because these techniques don’t typically apply colour to the root in the same uniform way, the regrowth is often more gradual and less obvious. That said, clients who have had significant lightening close to the root may still benefit from a touch up between full appointments to maintain the overall brightness and blend.

How Is a Root Touch Up Different From a Full Colour Appointment?

The key difference is scope. A full colour appointment applies colour across the entire head, above applying colour to the regrowth area only.

This makes root touch ups quicker and more affordable than full appointments while still delivering a meaningful improvement to how your colour looks. At Wisteria Avenue we tailor the service to your specific colour and the degree of regrowth present, so the result blends naturally rather than looking patchy or uneven at the line where new colour meets existing colour.

How Often Will I Need a Root Touch Up?

This depends on how quickly your hair grows, how visible your regrowth is, and how bothered you are by it. As a general guide most clients with an all over tint find that a root touch up every four to six weeks keeps their colour looking consistently good. Clients covering grey may prefer to come in closer to the four week mark as grey regrowth tends to be particularly visible.

For highlighted or balayage clients, the softer grow out that these techniques provide typically means a full appointment every ten to fourteen weeks is sufficient without needing a touch up in between. Again this varies depending on your specific colour and how much lightening was applied close to the root.

Will a Root Touch Up Damage My Hair?

Any colour service involves some degree of chemical processing, and root touch ups are no exception. That said, because the colour is applied only to the regrowth area rather than the full length of the hair, the overall processing is more limited than a full colour appointment.

At Wisteria Avenue we always assess the condition of your hair before applying any colour service and adjust our approach accordingly. If your hair needs a conditioning treatment alongside your root touch up, we’ll tell you and factor that into the appointment.

What Should I Expect at My Root Touch Up Appointment?

A root touch up appointment at Wisteria Avenue typically follows the same structure as any colour appointment, just in a more focused form.

We’ll begin with a brief consultation to check that the colour we’re applying matches your existing colour correctly, particularly if some time has passed since your last full appointment or if your hair has changed in any way. Colour can shift subtly over time and getting the match right is what ensures the blend looks natural.

The colour is then applied to the regrowth area, processed for the appropriate amount of time, and rinsed. Depending on your colour and your hair’s needs, a toner may be applied afterwards to keep the overall result looking fresh and consistent. Your stylist will finish with a blow dry unless you’d prefer otherwise.

The whole appointment typically takes between forty five minutes and an hour and a half depending on the degree of regrowth and any additional services included.

Can I Do a Root Touch Up at Home?

Home root touch up products are widely available and can work reasonably well for clients with straightforward, darker all over colours. For anything more complex, particularly lighter colours, colour treated hair, or clients covering significant grey, home application carries a real risk of an uneven result or colour that doesn’t match your existing shade accurately.

The most common issue with home root touch ups is the colour not matching precisely, leaving a visible line where the home colour meets the salon colour. This can be difficult and costly to correct. If there is any doubt, a salon appointment is always the safer choice.
